My XM subscription ends in a week or so and I called them looking for a deal. While the ZWINBACK code didn't work again this year, the rep was able to extend my subscription for 6 months for $38.85 ($6.41/mo). We'll see what is possible next May ... I was just reviewing the new channel lineup .. wife doesn't like the extra DJ talk on her favorite station (XM 26). We've got a 5-6 hour road trip planned for next weekend, so we shall see if we like the changes or not.

I'm with you ... when VW drops their new diesel into the Rabbit, I may be seriously tempted. However, diesel is still 30% higher at the pump than RUG ($1.989 vs. $2.699 at last check). I do a lot more city driving now, so a hybrid may make more sense for me, though I'm not too fond of the looks of the Prius (nor the new Insight from Honda).

I followed ot with an 80 VW Rabbit Is "ot" the new "teh"? :P I, too, like the practicality of a station wagon, though with an SUV in the family there really isn't much of a need for me to drive one. Speaking of entry level luxury hatches, would the Mini and the Volvo C30 qualify?
Hatchbacks

I've owned two over the years. The first was an '85 Accord LX, bought used when I graduated college. A buddy of mine and I drove it from California to Michigan with two sets of golf clubs and luggage. On the way to Michigan, we had both rear seats folded down; on the return trip, we rearranged everything so the passenger rear seat was upright and allowed the front passenger seat to recline fully. The Accord got traded in on an '88 Isuzu Trooper (hmm, guess I was ahead of the curve with that transaction - though the Trooper was ultimately sold and a Mazda Protege replaced it). The second was an '03 Focus ZX5, bought new. Was originally intended as the car for my daughter when she turned 16, but she never was comfortable driving a stick so I ended up driving it. Was pretty practical, but never liked the fact that for the rear seats to fold flat, the rear seat cushions had to be folded forward, which restricted how far back the front seats would go. Was able to fit a couple of dining room chairs into it with myself and another passenger, however. I'm thinking that my next car would be a hatch (I currently drive a Saturn L300 sedan). I've driven the Fit (1st generation), xD and the Vibe (2.4). I kinda miss the 'entry level' luxury hatches that were offered in years past ... Saab (900, 9000, 9-3 and 9-5), the Merkur Scorpio and XR4ti (remember those?), even the lamented 318ti and MB C230 3-door hatchbacks. Perhaps we may see a rejuvenation of hatches or small wagons going forward, from all sorts of manufacturers.

When I graduated from college in October 1985, I moved from AZ back to my hometown in California and needed a car. Dad knew the GM of the local Toyota dealer and we prowled the lot. There were a number of '84 & '85 Corolla's on the lot (the boxy style), but then I found an '85 Accord LX hatchback with less than 17K on the clock. 5-speed, burgundy outside and inside, A/C and the louvers over the rear window. Sold! I think I paid $8500 for it. A buddy of mine and I drove that car from California to Michigan and back in the fall of 1986. Best tank of gas was something like 44 MPG in New Mexico. I think all I ever did to it was regular maintenance - I may have had to put on a new set of tires, but I honestly can't remember. Traded it in on an '88 Isuzu Trooper for, I think, $5500 or so. Or maybe the car had 55K on the odometer. Sheesh - it's been 20 years since that happened. I know I got a pretty good trade in value from the Isuzu dealer.
Draft ad - Jeepster
by michaell on Fri Nov 07 14:28:34 PST 2008
Here is my first draft; edit away: 1949 Willys-Overland Jeepster – $5000 This vehicle belonged to my wife’s step-father. He bought it a year ago with the intention of restoring and driving it. Unfortunately, he became too ill and passed away before completing the project and now my mother-in-law is selling it. The vehicle has the 134 cubic inch inline 4 cylinder engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. Less than 3000 of these vehicles were built for the model year 1949. Work that he has had done to it: • Major tuneup including new spark plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor and distributor • Full brake overhaul including new brake lines, front and rear brake shoes (drum brakes all around), all the brake cylinders as well as the master cylinder • New battery, fuel pump, fuel lines and fuel tank • All 4 wheel bearings Vehicle runs good and the body is in decent shape. The vehicle is located in Cheyenne, WY though I am fielding all calls to answer questions. Call Michael at xxx-xxx-xxxx.
