Re: The 2010 BMW X1 [hpowders]
by circlew on Fri Nov 07 17:20:45 PST 2008
I guess you've never been in a B-7. Way too high a price but it defies physics quite well and blends luxo/performance at a new level. Call it a sublime M-5. How's this for thrust? The B7 ties the Audi R8, which is 1100 pounds lighter, at 12.8 seconds through the quarter-mile, at which point the gargantuan Alpina starts pulling away. The 551-hp Bentley Flying Spur can't keep up, and Audi's 450-hp S8 is so much slower it's hardly worth mentioning. To 60 mph and through the quarter, the B7 is within 0.2 second of the 510-hp, twin-turbo V-12 Mercedes S600, which means the Alpina will likely outrun the less torquey, naturally aspirated 518-hp 2008 Mercedes S63 AMG. But the B7's immense capabilities go beyond its mondo acceleration, hauling its 4684 pounds around the skidpad at a planted 0.91 g. Mauling the throttle, however, can convince the rear tires to break loose, and the B7 will indulge your drifting fantasies until you tire of painting jet-black arcs on the pavement (we had to try). Brake-pedal feel is excellent, and the one-inch-larger brakes (from the Euro-spec 760i) resisted fading despite repeated 150-mph stops, although stopping distances didn't improve significantly. The Snow Issue (Some help please)!
by djocks on Sun Feb 09 09:25:00 PST 2003
This is for brave1heart, riez, and shapiro. I live in Conneticut and was fortunate to have Friday off. I just received my 330i on Wednesday of last week with Dunlap Graspic ds-1 snow tires mounted. My performance tires are now stacked in the garage. I am not going to be as fortunate tomorrow when depending on who you listen to we are going to get about 4 inches of snow. I have been driving in the snow my whole life but not since high school in an '84 Monte Carlo have I faced it in rwd. It looks like the morning will be O.K. but the ride home an adventure. My question is would you recommend putting weight in the trunk? Or in your opinion, is it not needed? This is for nkeen. I owned a 2001 GTI VR6 before getting my bimmer. My pocket rocket was well crafted, and fun. However, the driving dynamics are not close! The VW was not balanced well, rattled, was unreliable and suffered from so much torque steer it absolutely jittered when pushed. The engine was literally too big for the size of the car and fwd! My wife did not feel comfortable driving it not to mention was not high on the rocket hatch looks. The 330i is civil enough for her to drive and enjoy and the purity of the behing the wheel experience is sublime! I agree ironically that for the difference in price, the VW Jetta GLI 6-speed, was my 2nd choice and if I were buying probably the way I would have gone. But for lease value the BMW is more affordable than people think and overall in a completely different galaxy than the VW. Features are not the BMW strong suit, the driving experience is!
Re: Just Needs Better Tires [m6user]

m6user, point taken! :) BTW, when I said "it's not just about sales numbers", I was trying to make the point that while the manual V6 itself wasn't selling well, it probably or possibly enhanced sales of the auto version by helping cast a sporty image for the Mazda 6. I'm no marketing expert, but I believe that the sublime sportiness (including availability of manuals in all trims) is a MAJOR reason why the 3- and 5-series sell well..........despite the fact that only very few BMW buyers care for sportiness. I believe the sporty manual V6 had a similar effect on the prev. gen. Mazda 6 and it would have sold even more poorly without the sportiness image. I was in no way suggesting ithe manual sold well and Mazda foolishly pulled it off the market for no reason.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, all on eBay. Gotta love it.
Is This Illegal Already??
by ponderpoint on Thu Jun 26 07:22:34 PDT 2008
We've all seen them - as long as it's a double yellow on a two lane, they clog up traffic five or ten under the limit. Sure enough - when you finally get a passing lane they speed up (and NOT just because it's a straightaway) and get aggressive. I'm not here to argue the "Little Hitlers" phenomenon, my contention is that it may be illegal. A lot of places are getting more serious about road rage with laws against "engaging" another driver - the usual items are obscene gestures and obvious eye contact or using the vehicle with a violent maneuver. Isn't the act of sudden acceleration while being passed "engaging" another driver with a violent maneuver already? Any cops in here? This activity to me, seems to be an act of road rage although somewhat sublime and just appearing as inconsiderate.... Also - an open message to police agencies - you REALLY need to get a lot more unmarked vehicles and I'm not talking those stupid Crown Vic's that everybody knows is an unmarked vehicle. Get some high powered Mustangs or Corvettes, whatever you prefer and equip them with cameras and telemetry (the road rager will probably NOT pullover for a Corvette, we all realize that) and have the marked vehicle orbiting somewhere in the vicinity...

" Right on, We went from from a cpi in the '90's ( originated in the '50's) that overstated oil, it counted both home heating oil and gasoline to one that excludes food & energy. What a joke. Btw, no one in finance gives any credibility to the BLS ( Bureau of Labor Statistics) or CBO ( Congressional Budget Office). Neither one has ever issued a report that hasn't been revised multiple times in the quarters that succeded. Also btw when I was taking economics the definition of a recession was 3 quarters of declining gnp. Inflation seems to be rearing it's ugly head now as the accepted definition is now 2 quarters. What next ? One? A bad week? My comment on the faux recession derives from that the major investment banks starting calling for a recession last October when the reality of their , "sublime "problems became evident. In January , Merrill Lynch announced we were in a recession because the BLS unemployment number came in at 5%.Anyone remember when that used to be considered full employment? Two days prior to that ADP announced that nonfarm payrolls had increased by 470,000 jobs a figure much higher that was expected. But what the heck do they know. They only run payrolls.
