Limited improvement, chains?

You've got to be kidding me. Maybe I should introduce you to the former mayor of Nyssa (Or) and let him show you what can be done with an old green monster jeep and chains on all four. But the real point is that even with our Jeep Cherokee Limiteds, with the center diff'l locked and LSD, we often had to resort to chains even here within the local Puget sound area. Of course a lot of that, but not all, had to do with the inexpertise of all the influx of CA drivers in the 89 timeframe. The only way to get around those idiots was through the barrow pit.

brillmtb; Now you tell me... I just returned from Nyssa in my 01 AWD 911 but I don't think I would have been taking it to any fishing holes anyway. I also have an 01 AWD RX300 in which I am quite throughly dissapointed with regards AWD capability. Previously I had an 85 and a 92 Jeep and both had full-time and part-time modes. Made many trips to bachelor with chains on all four wheels in part time mode. Full time is good for "normal" use but when the going gets tough the tough get going in part-time mode.

AS I've said before, I bought the second RX because it came with VSC, TRAC and HID. I was led to believe that TRAC would help with engine torque distribution front to rear (yeah, I know, shame on me), it doesn't, but as you can tell I'm not altogether displeased with the vehicle. Getting stuck.. We were going to drive the RX from Seattle to Nyssa oregon this past winter so I went out and bought two sets of tire chains. Then I read the RX owners manual and discovered that chains can only be installed on the front. So the chains stayed at home in the garage and luckily we had out-standing weather throughout our trip, virtually no snow on any of the four mountain passes on our return route from central oregon. The only potential problem we had was the Nav telling us to go more than an hour out of our way on the shortest time computation from Condon OREGON to home. We took our grandkids up to the pass to play in the snow new years day. As luck would have it we had to take an AWD Aerostar because there were seven of us. In the parking lot at the pass the aerostar had no problem getting around on the packed snow and ice but I did watch as a new RX failed to negotiate an incline (along with Many, many otherds) that the aerostar had no problem with twice. Then along came a new 4runner. When he couldn't get up the incline I got out and offered to push, when apparently made him slightly angry and he said no, he'd try it in low range. Of course that didn't work either. So no, I haven't been stuck in the RX, but it hasn't been into a trial by fire yet either.

Haven't skied there for many years now, have a good friend in Nyssa, if you see a 79 911 Targa running around with "NYSSA" plate be sure and say hello. Road maintenance is more than okay, we just imported too many californians who don't have a clue, they think the throttle is the answer to everything. You often need chains to get around them after they spin out in the road or in the ditch. If you live in Alaska you don't have any choice but to know what the wintertime driving rules are, regretably not so in Seattle. outrun/salesman. I bought my first Lexus in late 91, a new 92 Ls400, stayed with the same salesman until he recently relocated to Oxnard, none of this was his fault. Regarding Lexus' supplied information on the RX300, reminds me of my USAF recruiter in 57, didn't lie, but certainly with held some of the important details.

Just made a round trip from Seattle to Nyssa, ore, 478 miles each way. Yakima, I84. Lexus recommends chains only on front, extreme interference from coil spring in rear. If you need chains then be extremely careful as the ratio of traction front to rear with chains only on the front will make the vehicle extremely squirrelly, especially so during braking or downhill.
