09 TL too big, weird front end
by xrunner2 on Wed Oct 15 09:59:57 PDT 2008
The 09 TL looks much better in person. Personally, I think the grill will start to grow on you as you see more of them out there. Have not driven one yet, but plan on it this week. But, as an owner of a 04 Tl, can't imagine it's not a nice ride. I have an 04 TL, wife has an 07 TL. We were both at Acura dealer yesterday for servicing. Spoke to a sales guy and he having to be positive about style of entire car offered that front grille probably will not hold up well and will show scratches and other marks with time. He said that he liked the front end of TSX over the TL and also said that TSX would get a V6 next year. The car looks bloated compared to the 04-08 generation that was trim and athletic looking. With extra size and weight, would be surprised if handling/performance of 09 even matches 04-08. Hoping R&T does a road test on 09. Will look especially at slalom speed, in that is a key measure of a car's dexterity and agility. I nor wife would not consider buying the 09 TL because of styling/size. Fortunately, do not need replacements for awhile yet. Perhaps Acura headqtrs will get feedback on weird front styling of 09 and will at least make some adjustments in coming years of this generation car. Acura clearly goofed up on making a larger size car. The 04-08 was perfect size per my perspective and was actually downsized from previous gen 99-03 gen TL.

No doubt in my mind that cheap imported shoes aren't as well made as when they made them here. You won't notice the comfort difference in a shirt. You will in a shoe. You are right. I tried on a pair of Dexter's made in China. They felt like plastic shoes compared to the ones I have that were made here in the USA. It is sad, but not likely to change as we have become a throw away society.

Actually there are 1000s of garment workers still in the USA. NYC and LA have their fair share of sweat shops. Mostly illegals would be my guess. I am not sure where all the union garment workers are at. UNITE has about 200,000 members in the US. The are tied with the HERE hotel workers Union. Total 465,000 members. So there is still a lot of cloths being made in the USA by union people. My mother and grandmother were in the garment workers union in the 1940s in LA. They all worked piece work back then. The faster you could sew the more you could make. I still have about 8 pairs of VANs from when they were made here in So CA. I would not buy a pair of Chinese made shoes unless it gets dire. I think I have enough shoes to last the rest of my life. I stocked up on Dexter's before they shut down here in the USA. I have to wonder if all the UAW members were so worried about buying stuff made in China?

Especially when child seats weren't as rediculously complicated. Isn't that the truth. Thankfully, my youngest is in a booster seat, so that is easy. But those infant car seats are a major PIA. I learned my lesson on infant car seats and 2 door coupes when my wife and I were in college long before we were married with our own kids. One of my wife's class mates had a baby and my wife (girlfriend at the time) would babysit for her friend once in a while. My wife had a '94 Probe at the time. Putting a baby seat in the back seat of a Ford Probe required you to be a contortionist, which was hard to do at 20 years old, let alone mid 30's. When my wife became pregnant we immediately got rid of the Probe and haven't had a 2 door since. The current car seats are even worse than the ones we used. With all the extra tie downs and clamps, it requires patience and dexterity to install those damn things.

I only buy Hawaiian shirts MADE IN HAWAII. 99% of my shirts are Hawaiian. I try to buy US made T-Shirts though people give me some made elsewhere. I don't like any of the new style shorts. So I am wearing ones I have had for 20 or more years. If I control my weight they should outlast me. Same with my Van's & Dexter shoes all Made in the USA. I don't own a pair of gym type shoes. My work boots are Danner's made in Oregon. I take the Kramer view of under shorts.

If AA wants ALL employees to take a 2/3 cut in total compensation, imagine how many people would, all of a sudden, not be able to afford their mortgage, even though they work full time??? That happens all the time in business. During the mid 1990s the oilfield jobs were all but gone. Most of the Union companies went under and non-union companies did the work at half the price. The Culinary workers took a huge hit in about 1995. The cooks were making $23 per hour and the housekeepers $18. They got cut to $15 and $11. Many were laid off as much of the oil field in Prudhoe Bay was like a ghost town. We were lucky on that one as we were in the middle of a 4 year contract. If the AA CEO decided to share $9 million of his $10 million paycheck it would be less than $1.25 per hour for the 3650 line workers. If he relocates the plant to Mexico and gets workers for half what he is offering the UAW he will get a bigger paycheck. I remember when Reebok closed up shop in the USA and went overseas. The CEO made $25 million that year. I believe it was the biggest paycheck for any CEO up to that time. He was ripped in the newspapers and TV. He just smiled all the way to the bank we people continued to buy Reeboks. I would never buy them again. Now I am wearing old worn out Van's Tennis shoes that were made here in CA. I hope they last till I die. I take real good care of my Dexter dress shoes that I found at Ross Dress for Less. They were one of the last pairs made in the USA. All made in China now. If I was a betting man I would say the AA brass are scouting locations in Mexico right now. If they have not already closed the deal down there.
