I'm already with ya on the Lee Iacocca thing. I can't think of a better guy in the nation to watch over the spending of the $25B...umm...I mean the $50B. Could $100B be that far off? This one is right up Lee Iacocca's alley! And I mean that with respect, after all, I have read Lee's autobiography. I was really impressed with his strategic vision, his intensity in following through on difficult projects, and his keen desire for the company he's working with to succeed. An incredible talent in the auto industry.

Once again I agree with you, as well as the many others whose posts I just read. All of you make great points in that if "we" just give GM money to survive until 2010 that is not helping them. It's really prolonging the inevitable really. It's as thought they don't want to go BK simply because they want to save face, but yet rather begging, borrowing and stealing is seen more noble I guess you can say. Their (Failing 3) bailout is getting to be just like the AIG bailout: First the collective needed, and got, $25B to retool to make fuel-efficient cars Then GM wanted $10B to buy Chrysler Then another $25B because all of a sudden GM's going to run out of cash sometime between today and second quarter 2009, and Ford & Chrsyler could use a little help too Next they needed an additional $25B to fund the pensions, retiree health care, and the like (and I'm pretty sure somewhere in there, there has to be a mention of giving raises & bonuses, i.e. incentives, to retain the brain-trust, the talent - the same "brains" that got them into this mess) And as stated by another poster, they act as though GM going into BK is the as them closing up shop - that is simply not the case. It would actually help because then they could re-configure from the top down & bottom up. Just giving them billions upon billions and letting the same mess go on is not going to solve the problem. Some say people won't buy a product from a company that is in BK; hell, people aren't buying GMs now!!

Gee, my brother is in the entertainment industry and I'm trying to figure out how to interject my family more into his life!!! Normal is highly over rated... Tough with 3000 miles separating us, not to mention talent, drive and luck! Just kidding, one man's normal is another man's excess...

I believe that the Volt can go an estimated 40 miles on electic motors alone. At that point, a small gas engine kicks in to power/recharge the electrics. The gas engine does not drive the wheels directly. Have long been disgusted with GM and the arrogance they displayed in contnually building non-competitive cars, updating the body every few years, sometimes slapping another badge on 'em (yeah, Cimarron) and thinking that they could fool most of the people all of the time. This was one of the most powerful corps. on earth, full of talented engineers and " car people." But, run by bean counters (Roger Smith!), and run into the ground. It appears that slowly GM is coming around, maybe too late? 'Twould be a shame to fade away now, but the sins of the past have finally apparently placed a stranglehold upon The General. Thanks to the UAW, too... I'm not sure putting "Government people" in charge would be the answer. Maybe some car people/businessmen. Lutz ain't too bad a start?
Re: 50 billions to UAW workers? [imidazol97]

Are we going to add another $50 billion with more than half going to support UAW overpaid wages and benefits? Well I would like you to define what overpaid means ??? You know darn well Keith, what those folks in the GM, plants are really getting with this two-tier wage system. If Uncle Sam, doesn't save these three large corporations because certain members many of which were recently voted for back in office support unfree-trade then just what in the heck are these folks suppose to do. I hear so many folks gripe and complain about how great these people have yet they themselves thought they were to good to go work in a car factory back in the day !!! I wish my generation had the opportunity of yours to make a good living making cars or car parts !!! GM, agreed to the define pension plan and invested plenty of money at the right times back a few years ago when the stock-market was booming to pay for retiree healthcare costs !!! It amazes me just how uneducated Faux News, is on the subject and they showed their right-winged biased all morning on "Faux and Friends" enough to make me puke everytime I hear them say "fair and balanced" CNBC, had Michigan's Govenor Jennifer Granholm, whom I admire a lot because she has tried harder than anyone to close down free trade and support the automobile industry and labor unions !!! If we can throw $85 billion so far at AIG, we can sure loan GM, the money !!! I can guarantee you one damn thing and that is Barack Obama, will fix this economy !!!! It will take him two-terms to rid ourselves of failed Bush Economics, but I have confidence that this community organizer ya'll love to hate will succeed at being a successful president !!! He has top people around him for advisors including some republicans !!! If the UAW would take another wage cut and cut the benefits they're wanting US to pay for, that would be different. I just saw a FoxNews interview with a Union person not wanting to lower anything--just give them the money. Are you still mad about the election as to why you would say something like this ??? You know from several posting from me and others that a entry level job at the car plants is $14 an/hr. and ask what will that get you in Dayton, Ohio ??? A Chevy Aveo and a efficiency apartment ???? That would be like me saying school teachers are over-paid, right ??? Your spouse is a school teacher, right ??? Many on the right think they should have their wages slashed as well something I don't support !!! You rail on the UAW, but did not say anything regarding the compensation or golden parachutes these executives have in place. If anything the government should put a statue of limitations on executive compensation packages !!! Don't tell me you wouldn't attract the best and brightest because you've seen just what kind of talent Detriot's Big 3 has attracted with their recent launches they've released !!!!    Have a great day imidazol97 !!! :) :) :) :) -Rocky

Odd, because my 1988 Buick Park Avenue is essentially the same car as that 1987 Olds Ninety-Eight. Was there that big a difference between the assembly quality of an Oldsmobile and a Buick Detroit, particularily GM, has shown a great talent for rebadging ostensibly identical cars. I wouldn't think there was any real differences between you Buick and the other gentlemen's Olds. Assembly quality better at Buick, possibly, but more likely just luck of the draw - or a tribute to your conscientious routine maintainence. Consistency of quality of manufacture has been a Detroit problem for years, witness what has happened to Toyota recently (at least according to CR) some early problems with a few isolated models (the Camry V6 being one) have been corrected all within about 1 model year and that car along with some others are now all rated superior in that regard. With Detroit this kind of thing is the exception, not the rule, and this remains as true today as it was back in the 80s..
