95 Nissan pick-up won't start
by byrd2 on Mon Nov 17 21:46:53 PST 2008
Hi, My sister has a '95 Nissan, as I recall, small pick-up with the 4 cylinder engine in it. It would only start and barely run with no power after I replaced the plugs, wires, distribuitor cap, and rotor. Cylinder compression is good, adn fuel pressure is also good. After replacing those tune up components, I hgot it started only after setting turning the distributor up against on of the stops, counterclockwise. But as soon as you put it in gear, the engine would die. Hence no power. It has a timing chain, and has 160,000 miles on it. Could it be any f the camshaft/crankshaft position sensors have failed? Or the ignition module, as no check engine light comes on? Or a stretched timing chain, or bad tensioner. It sort of did make a racket from the fron of the engine. A broken timing chain would not allow the engine to start at all, but a loose one would sure throw everything off. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

But that insurance policy doesn't pay out 100% of what you would have gotten. It's a reduced pension. My sister was a long time UAL employee and she got her full pension in spite of UAL's bankruptcy. I think Kernick pointed out somewhere around here that the PGBC pension amount is based on years of service or some formula like that. Since the Big 3's workers are generally older than those employed by the foreign car manufacturers in the US, many of their pensions may not be reduced all that much. Either way, the taxpayer is gonna be on the hook big time, since the premiums paid into the PGBC won't be near enough to cover the payments.
Re: Pricing Information [shipo]

Thanks for the info, Shipo. I wasn't aware of any "Boston Adjustment"...that's interesting, I wonder what the reason for that is. I might hold out for some kind of cash incentive from Mazda to bring down the price a bit, as I was thinking that these cars were selling for less than they apparently are. Maybe I'll swing through Werner this week and feel them out a bit. And to the other poster considering learning to drive standard transmission, my advice is this: watch someone else do it. Ride as a passenger and watch their feet, their hand on the gear shift, the tachometer. Listen to the motor. This is mainly how I picked up the skill, as I used to watch my sister in her '82 Mazda GLC as we drove to school. You'd be surprised hopw much you'll learn when you're really paying attention.
Ok saw this yesterday.

Was a few cars behind someone at a stop light, light turns green with NO left turn arrow and the first cars just starts out and makes the left turn right infront of on coming traffic. The great thing about this is that my sister was driving the car, it was our nieces wedding and we were going to the reception. I gave her grief over it the whole night. :shades:

Hi m4d I certainly appreciate the relationship between you and your sister...She is a lucky girl......the Jag with the cpo should qualify as used (preowned sounds better, but we deal with the truth-you and me) and what I meant primarily is that if a car costs eighty thousand dollars new, and then fifty thousand dollars with five thousand miles and a year old--same newish model--then that is a much better deal....These high priced brands really take a monster hit right up front, and is such a waste of money it is shaming....I personally like the Mercedes cls....of course all your short list is tempting....and that should do you well as you aren`t wedded to a single brand....I think in a month or so, a really good deal will come along, and it may be the best chance you get --as these financial dislocations only come around a couple of times in your life......Glad you dodged the bullet Tony ps don`t give up on the 911....Go for the Gold

A slightly used is better indeed, tony. But the 06 CPO XJ is too tempting at $32k. Interior more luxurious than I expected (the ultra smooth leather beaten only by Lexus LS). Also the handling is as sharp as it can get for the size. Last, it still represent the class and image one should expect from a luxo car. Perhaps I'll dish a bit more and get the 07 instead. The options I consider now are fewer (narrowed down from the huge list last time): bmw 6/ 3coupe / MB cls Audi A6 / 3sedan / XJ All available for under $45k. I'd definitely consider a Chrysler 300c if only it doesnt have such crappy interior and pathetic CPO warranty  . I had to cross off the 1-er from the list. There's a long waiting list and the price here is ridiculous (MSRP at best). On an unrelated note I visited my sister at campus yesterday. She challenged me to switch cars and race her on the twisties near campus. I told her not to get too cocky, words I came to regret instantly. I drove her rx-8 and I COULDN'T KEEP UP??? :surprise: , and everyone thought I was the speed demon in the family :confuse:
