this is simply a sypply and demand production thing here. Most of us middle-aged population here in the States feel like The General has been dead and dereft of creativity for about 40 years. We don't feel the Big Guy has our best interests at heart by any stretch. Product has been tolerable but doesn't light our fire. I say no to a bailout for the States. Maybe SAIC of China(their Chinese build partner)can purchase bits and pieces of GM, including some experts who don't mind moving to China, and work to build for the burgeoning car-buying public there. Beggars can't be choosy, eh?

My FIL gets his pension from the PBGC and he gets about 60% of his original pension. There is a formula that I believe considers age, length of employment, and pension amount. My FIL was around 53 when LTV went BK and he had around 31 years of service.

I'm going to have to say the worst car of 2008 is the Dodge Nitro. The Nitro is a piece of crap. The interior is hidious, the exterior even worse then interior, horrible gas mileage, small, horrible reliability, and Dodge Badging. And the 09 Worst Car is for sure...the Journey, even worse then the Nitro. Chrysler should give up, they make hidious, unreliable vehicles, that don't even appeal to people above the age of 70. The Jeep Patriot and Compass are in the running aswell. I know I sure as hell don't want a SUV that is powerless, and can't even handle snow, yet alone rocks. I would be more comfortable off-roading in my 05 A6!

I am totally surprised that you mention you felt Torque steer on the AWD version.I tested the car last Saturday in the pouring rain and experienced ZERO torque steer.Luckily for me my sales associate is about my age (early thirties) or even younger.I told him from the get go that I am going to push the car hard from the stoplights and hard in the corners, he said "GO for it." The AWD felt totally solid in all aspects even the brakes are a MAJOR improvement over my 2003 type S and this was in the rain. The shift points were right on the money, paddle shifters worked like a beauty. The leather is top notched but I did not like the two tone scheme in the test car. Also the big fat steering wheel was not of my taste. The five star wheels I could live without but its not that bad compared to the FWD version.I am waiting to see the HPT version to pass judgement.Overall, the car felt quick all over the REV band and the suspension felt tight but a little harsh for the weak at heart. The tech toys were satisfying to use if you can find them on the dash.
Re: How to save GM [plekto]

"okay, this is huge, too. Have a couple of demos for each model at each dealership. And one in the show room. Nothing else in inventory. If you want a GM, you order it and it comes in 3-4 weeks. Mini does this and it works great." I mentioned this concept over on the "Sales Stories" board a year or so ago and got blasted! The justification is that sales people provide a service when people who don't know what they want walk in to a dealership. Of course these are the very same people who usually pay more than those of us who hang out on Edmunds. The concept of dealers who have an inventory worth millions sitting on lots collecting dust and accumulating interest charges is at best an old fashion business model. I agree, go in and test drive the car(s) you are considering. Give a menu of motor and other options, check off the boxes and order the car. There can be someone at the dealership that qualifies them for financing and orders the actual car. This is the age of the Internet folks! Where am I wrong here?

I liked what Obama said about the bailout. "My hope is that over the course of the next week, between the White House and Congress, the discussions are shaped around providing assistance but making sure that that assistance is conditioned on labor, management, suppliers, lenders, all of the stakeholders coming together with a plan -- what does a sustainable U.S. auto industry look like? ALL parties need to get together and come up with a plan. It is not enough that a few guys on top take a big salary cut. That will not save GM in the long run. They HAVE to become competitive with ALL auto companies in the World. We are in a global market place. GM is still in the dark ages of being the only choice, take it or leave it. All those involved need to wake up and smell the coffee. Or look for a different line of work. Want some fries with that?
