Years ago when I sold apartments in NYC we used a "binder" to get the buyer locked into completing a deal. It was a strictly psychological document, that had no force of law at all. The form was printed and had full disclosures on it. They are never used today to my knowledge as people have become more sophisticated, and see them for what they are..a phychological ploy to seal the deal. THey have nothing to do with someone being serious. There is another aspect to this. In my area at least, I have never encountered a dealer who has tried this sales method. I would think that if this is fairly unusual in a given area most customers would be understandably shocked and suspicious if it was pulled on them. The response might be " no other dealer has asked us to do this, why should we do it with you?" I think anytime a particular sales techniques stands out from the norm people are apt to become suspicious, regardless if the technique being employed is harmless or not. (I still remember with amusement when Crabtree Ford in Westchester in the 1970's required a $50 deposit to get a test drive, and then refused to return the money without the customer being worked..the screaming was very funny :) ) While I might sign such a document if it was a printed form with full disclosures printed on it, there is NO way I would ever sign a scribbled piece of paper. It has nothing to do with my being serious. Any dealer who expects customers to sign scribbled pieces of paper rather than a printed fully-disclosed document is not being professional. Now I guess some dealers here use this method with success. Thats fine with me. And in my business I would never fire a salesman who had a quality deal just because I had to get involved to facilitate the process. That is the purpose of a manager. They are facilitators.

raybear- You still didn't answer my question. I'm not talking about charging some people and not others! You said that, "waiving the DOC fees was ILLEGAL." I checked with the CONNECTICUT DMV. Their response, short and to the point- "Sorry, however they are not regulated by the state." So, again, who told you that it is ILLEGAL to waive them? Mr. Crabtree or the DMV? fastdriver

raybear- WHERE are you now? No comment on the "ILLEGAL" DOC fees that Crabtree can't drop?? fastdriver

I just e-mailed the CT State Dept. of Motor Vehhicles that licenses new car dealers in the state of CT and asked them about this DOC stuff! I'll post their response here IF they even answer. I would be VERY surprised if it is "illegal" to waive it as someone from Crabtree Subaru stated above! fastdriver
clutch shudder fix
by stoner420 on Sun Sep 07 08:51:48 PDT 2003
Try to find another dealer -- For example, I brought my car into my dealer (Crabtree Subaru, Shelton, CT) for 15k mile service (first time I'd even been to this particular dealer) and told the service mgr that I have clutch shudder (just to have it documented, didn't even ask for repair). When they finished the oil change, he called me and asked when I wanted to bring it in to get the clutch replaced.
'04 Forester XT

Just purchased a Cayenne Red XT with AT, no options, at Crabtree Subaru in Shelton, CT. Great experience, no pressure, they let my wife drive the XS vs XT, and let me drive the XT too without complaining. Even the finance manager was not a major pain in the behind, he was pretty laid back and barely even tried to sell us on the extended warranty. (Too bad we got the guy though, the other finance manager was a really cute blonde lady! Well maybe it's good after all that we got this guy instead.. ;-) We went in on Sunday, they did not have the car in stock, but located one at a dealer about 35 miles away, and so we picked it up Monday evening with 58 miles on the odo. We traded in an 01 Accord EX with low mileage; when the time came to deal, the salesguy just asked us how much we would be willing to pay bottom line... I gave a number based on edmunds invoice/tmv for the XT and kbb for the Honda, and they accepted right away (guess I should have tried for a few hundred lower, doh!) Anyhow, it works out in the end that I got a value pretty much right inline with the kbb value for the Honda and the edmunds tmv on the XT. Maybe we could have done slightly better, but we didn't even really shop around or try to haggle, it was just wham, bam, done. I've already used this dealership's service dept. for my WRX a few times, and they've been pretty good, so I was somewhat inclined toward buying from them anyhow. The pure convenience factor of the whole thing probably offsets any small amount I might have done better searching around. I financed 2.9% for 3 years, this included $3000 remaining to pay off on the Honda. Only downside was that they only filled the gas just less than halfway. (Also the windshield wiper fluid was almost empty, but they refilled it for me.) Anyhow, the car RULES!!! THE ENGINE IS AWESOME!!! We love it!
