Re: 1998 Honda Civic child lock/door not opening [theozzfactor]
by kiawah on Mon Oct 27 12:07:14 PDT 2008
Let me get this straight...... The child lock is on, so you are not able to open the door from the inside......and the linkage is broken or disconnected, so you are not able to open the door from the outside either? So you can't get the door opened, so you can then take the inside door panel off to get at the locking mechanism? Sounds like no option but to get a new car............ This will be difficult, but I think your only option is to put down the window, and with a strong flashlight and who knows what kind of tools.....reach in down thru the window slot and try to figure out what linkage to try to move, to snag the door opening linkage and unlock the door. If that doesn't work, you may have to destroy the inner door panel to get at the linkage, and then replace it with one from a junk yard. Not sure if you can get the inside door panel off, while the door is in the closed position. You may have to bend some heavy gauge wire to reach down to where you need to get to.

Great...sounds like you were able to find out the cause of the noise. It may be that somehow the upper window frame is bent slightly. You may be able to bend it back in yourself.
15000 miles and NO issues
by bcameron on Sat Jul 26 06:45:21 PDT 2008
After driving imported cars/vans for over 25 years (Honda's and VW's), I have to say I was very cautious to even think about buying a GM. My experience with GM products wasn't good (which is what sent me to imports over 25 years ago) and in rental fleets where I'd basically laugh at the crap the General tried foisting off on the North American public and wondering why they were still in business. I attended the autoshow last year and saw the new Chevy Malibu and came away VERY impressed. It was close to the fit and finish of my VW Passat GLX (which has to be one of the best interiors in the business) and finally GM had things right like direct lines of site to the gauges versus having to bend your head to see important gauges like the SPEEDO in previous versions I'd rented. This caused me to wander over to the SUV section to see if they had anything... and I fell in love with the Enclave. I was about ready to purchase a Mercede's R320 (my number 2 was a LEXUS RX400) when I saw it. I loved the looks of the thing (I got the chocolate CXL fully loaded with AWD) and thought the interior was the best of all of them. We call it the magic school bus as it's WAY bigger than it looks - you find out when you try to park it - do NOT buy it without the rear backup camera! We have put over 15000 miles on it in fairly rough service (we live out in the country on some pretty bumpy roads and tow a 4000 boat a fair bit) and have had NO issues on it at all. This is the first car we've had that I haven't taken 5-10 things into the dealer at the first maintenance check. My last Honda (Odyessy), I'd replaced the tranny by now (the first of 3 times). On the Passat - the most reliable of the cars I'd ever owned, I'd had it in for lots of minor trim issues - just factory QA. The Buick was perfect. Now, there are two things that I don't like... The lack of Rain Sensor wipers - apparently the gal who is the product owner hates them and decided that customers wouldn't get a choice. Someone needs to tell her who she really works for! The other is that the tranny shifts around a bit much. I think it's because the 3.6 is a bit light for this heavy vehicle and they have put a 6 speed in it so it's going to shift down on steep hills or when passing. I can certainly live with it but it does bug my wife a bit. It isn't great on gas (especially if you drive it at 80mph) but if you keep the speed down, it's better than both my old Passat and the Odyssey. I heartily recommend this vehice and if they put a good torquey VW/Mercedes blue tech style Diesel in it, it would be just about perfect. It's SO quiet it is a joy to drive. Well done General - now if you can fix the rest of the crap in your line up you might actually have a chance of hauling yourself back from the brink.
Any auto people here??????

Supplier, engineer, marketing, or Big3 employee???? Lotsa what ifs!!!!! nvbanker obviously has a handle on the industry as well as the give away programs to keep our financial guys afloat.. The Big3 has also suffered loss of their supplier base which for years was strictly USA owned and operated..The Japanese established their transplant wholly owned Japanese supplier base during the 80s..which has supplied 85% of the Honda or Toyota parts at their various assembly locations in the states..The traditional Big3 supplier maybe got 15%..or that 15% came from offshore, China or mainland Japan. Now we really don't know where anything comes from and we don't really care.. The Big3 will need help from somewhere, the Japs for years were subsidized by the Japanese govt.and by our federal and state govts. in order to break into the American market. Our politicans made it possible for them to invade our country. I don't remember any reciprocal agreements going the other way..big tariffs..their deal. hindsight--they won't want our junky cars anyway.. The gradual creep of the foreign car invasion took 25 yrs and we is now up the creek with no paddle..and about to go over the dam..Bend over and kiss your backside----Good bye.. The socialism event has been building since the depression and it is rolling with along with Hope and Change--you figure it out and I know you will be happy w/o your freedoms, just as long as you can have your Asian named car Hon,Toy,Hun, and Kia..along with your computer and a membership to Costco, Sam's and a free pass to WalMart.. Mainstreet America, Mom & Pop stores were great, too bad most of you missed it.. Never tried driving a Jap car when calling on the Big3 or their suppliers, maybe I could have retired 30 yrs ago. and still be driving the same car.. Never regretted working for a company where the profit line was important and never invested in a company where profits didn't matter.. Spent yesterday with a family member who has been in China for the last 12yrs in the Auto supplier end. Joint-venture with a North American company-set up 4 new plts in the Asian area and looking to jump ship to join another supplier in the auto realm needing plants in China, India, and other countries..Not an easy life but profitable and will try another 4yrs of it..They live in an American community where the company pays the housing and the schooling, big bucks!!!!! Remember me-41Big3s and 2Porsches...$ premium is 4.16, regular 3.96 and the GPGT is now up to 22.46mpgs, last fillup. The triple digit run for a few miles on I-75 cleared out the cobwebs..All is well in Venice, Fla...and the energy bust is coming..Yes the local Chevy dealer has a Trailblazer SS, regular gas, 390 hp, mileage is 12/16....what a footprint!!!!

I haven’t dealt with them but son # 1 (the car geek) has, a couple times, and he likes their prices and their service. I deal exclusively with Tire Rack. I use one of their "Recommended Installers" who charges me $10/tire for mounting and balancing- and has the car in and out in less than 45 minutes. Just yesterday my wife picked up a lag bolt one of the X3's tires, and Tire Rack shipped out a replacement before they closed. The dealer installed a temporary plug and the new tire will be fitted tomorrow or Monday. Since Tire Rack has a warehouse in South Bend IN and Louisville is a UPS hub, standard UPS shipping is effectively "Next Day" shipping. I haven't purchased a tire from a local shop since 1992.

I had a reason for asking. I've put this off long enough. Sit down, bend over, and hold on to your socks. I have the same last name as YOU. To think that we were kin was a frightful expectation, but our clan never went north of Virginia, especially after THE WAR. I can understand them running you out of South Carolina---a Yankee in South Carolina and a smart a-- at that. What a disaster! :)
