Article Comments - 2009 Subaru Forester Diesel First Drive
by KarenS on Tue Sep 23 06:00:22 PDT 2008
Ordinarily, the only reason to go to Velden am Wörther See, Austria, is to luxuriate in one of the opulent hotels lining the lakeside, and stamina permitting, paddle out a bit in a solid teak rowboat. But today our attention turns to the highly practical matter of the 2009 Subaru Forester 2.0D — you know, the Subaru Forester Diesel. 2009 Subaru Forester Diesel First Drive

gas prices from different companies ALWAYS seem to stay remarkably similar to each other in the same geographical area Not so in many parts of San Diego county. In Lakeside that ARCO stations are $4.01 & $4.03 for RUG. The Citgo 7/11 is $4.15 and the Spirit which used to be Chevron is $4.39 cash $4.49 credit. All within two blocks of each other. I have seen it even more widely spaced. Spirit is $5.24 for diesel and the independent down the street is $4.75 for diesel. Across the city is varies from $3.88 to $4.49 for RUG. Diesel varies from $4.59 to $5.29. Most stations charge for CC. Shell gives 5% for using their CC. Costco now gives 3% with their AMEX Card. Costco is the best price most of the time.
Looking to buy an 2006 9.3 2.0T
by alexdrops on Sat Sep 22 05:55:16 PDT 2007
I want to buy a 2006 9.3 2.0T, and I found one at Saab of Lakeside, Macomb dealership in Michigan. It has about 26,000 miles on it, gray metalic color and has most of the options. This car was leased for 2 years and just returned. The car is in great condition and runs smooth. They are asking 20,995 for it but they also certified it and extended the warranty for another 5 years/100,000 miles. Is this a good offer? Should I negotiate more ? Please leave me some suggestions and I would greatly appreciate it !!!! Thank you!!!!
Update on CNW Credibility, its Dusty.
by kkerl on Tue Aug 14 12:33:45 PDT 2007
CNW's counter-intuitive 'Dust to Dust' study raised my curiosity on any possible biases I could find in the company. Here is what I found after a quick search. Draw your own conclusions. ______________________________________________________ Company Background Founded in 1984, CNW Marketing/Research began as Coastal NW Publishing Company. Through the years, clients and subscribers have spread from the Great Northwest to include every state of the union (except Alabama), Australia, Europe, Asia and Canada. Clients include major automobile manufacturers, banks and lending institutions, Wall Street brokerage firms and consultants. Besides publishing LTR/8+ (America's most quoted source of leasing information), CNW publishes new and used vehicle industry reference guides and study summaries, a monthly Retail Automotive Summary of sales and trends, as well as our online research distribution center, CNW by WEB. CNW holds an annual conference in Los Angeles in connection with Time Inc. Mr. Spinella is available for Executive Sessions for a limited number of clients. ________________________________________________________________________________- ________ This is very interesting aspect of CNW, catering to US Auto industry executives at a conference and golf club; not a good sign for unbiased research: CNW's Conference Center CNW Marketing Research's Vista del Lago conference center has hosted executive sessions for automotive executives. While some major renovations continue, the Center is accepting Session dates for 2007. Sessions now include golf outings at one of the country's best golf courses, Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes. Click here to go to Bandon Dunes' web site. This is the view at dawn from its deck overlooking Ten Mile Lake in Lakeside Oregon. Click for details. ________________________________________________________________________________- __________________ PaCIFIC iNSTITUTE, an unbiased CA reserch group, did a May, 2007 study on CNW; this is their conclusion: The Lack of Transparency in Regard to Funding As of May 2007, the company continues to refuse to provide information on the sources of funding for the analysis, other than to say that the report was “self-funded.” What this appears to mean is that funds from other clients (or profits from those funds) must have been used. By itself, this is certainly not evidence of error, but it violates fundamental principles requiring the transparency of research funding. Conclusion This (our) short review and analysis calls into question the unsubstantiated conclusions of the CNW “Dust to Dust” report – it appears that the report suffers from fatal flaws. Indeed, correcting only a few of these flaws completely changes the conclusions. A full analysis, however, would require more information about the data, assumptions, methods, and calculations used in the report. CNW has not released this information for independent review. We call on them to do so. At that time, it may be possible to accurately review and assess the important question of life-cycle energy for automobiles. Until then, substantial peer-reviewed and verifiable research indicates that the only reliable ways to cut the use of fossil fuels in the transportation sector are to build more efficient automobiles, develop cars that use alternative energy sources, and drive fewer miles. GM hybrid on it's way.
by 62vetteefp on Mon May 07 08:35:40 PDT 2007
GM's "two-mode" hybrid gas-electric Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon trucks won't hit the market until late this year, or early next year. But last week, GM allowed journalists a sneak peek at prototypes of the vehicles, including a small amount of time behind the wheel. The contrasting approaches to hybrid technology represented by the Tahoe and the Prius illustrate, quite dramatically, the different world views of GM and Toyota, which as of the first quarter of this year surpassed GM as the world's No. 1 seller of cars. Toyota's "Hybrid Synergy Drive" system is designed primarily to reduce the petroleum consumption of relatively light vehicles operating in the city. That's what you'd expect from a company whose roots are in the small-car-dominated Asian market. Toyota's efforts to use its hybrid technology as a power booster for large cars and SUVs have produced so-so results, both in terms of fuel-economy improvement and sales. GM, on the other hand, is a creature of the American heartland, where lots of people – including lots of GM employees – want vehicles that can comfortably haul up to seven people, their gear and a trailer, running a steady 70 miles per hour on the four-hour Friday-night run to the lakeside cottage. This isn't just a Michigan thing: Manhattanites with second homes upstate, or Angelenos who like a weekend in Vegas now and then, raise your hands. The centerpiece of GM's big-SUV-hybrid system is what GM engineers call a "two-mode" hybrid system. Boiling down some fairly complicated tech talk, the system works like this: Two electric motors housed inside the transmission, a 300-volt battery pack and some sophisticated software combine to supplement the energy from a 6.0-liter V-8 motor. From a standing start, the hybrid SUVs can accelerate to about 20 miles per hour on electricity alone, if you depress the accelerator gently. During a brief drive around a GM test track, all this power management goes on almost undetectably. The transition from eight to four cylinders and back is seamless, as is the transition from strong electric boost to none. That can make you forget you are in a hybrid vehicle, which is one reason GM took a page from Toyota's marketing notebook and equipped the Tahoe/Yukon with hybrid badges and special displays to remind drivers (and neighbors) of the value received for the extra money spent on the hybrid technology.
