Lake Placid Info
by fastback2 on Thu Apr 13 02:50:52 PDT 2000
My weekend vote would be for July 22-23, with July 29-30 as an alternate. As far as info about Lake Placid is concerned, I've set up a web page at http://www.ggw.org/xvlfafe/cougar_road_trip.htm I figured that it would be a good idea to set it up this way so that everyone has access to one page of Lake Placid info. Right now it's definitely a "bare bones" page as work has kept me pretty busy this week. I'm planning to add more to it this weekend. Any comments/suggestions are welcome. In a way, going to Lake Placid later in the month is better as we will not have to deal with all that lovely holiday traffic (I lived near Boston for a while, and got an 'appreciation' for heavy traffic). As far as accommodations are concerned, there are plenty of alternatives to the ol' Holiday Inn. The last place I stayed at was a small motel overlooking Oxbow Lake near Speculator (about 1.5 hr from Lake Placid). About a 100 yards south was a bar & grill while about a 1/4 mile up the road was a diner which had a tasty breakfast menu. I'm sure we can find a similar situation closer to Lake Placid. Actually, I wouldn't mind doing a campout either; I'll look for places that offer both campgrounds as well as cabins. fastback2 aka Trailmaster

Oxbow is about 2-3 miles west of Shelbourne Falls...We have "funyaked' down the Deerfield River....And yes...it is beautiful there....compared to the flat lands of Florida...
Thanks, gang

I'll talk to Rodman and Framingham Ford. I get a trucker's magazine and both of them advertise. Drove a SC V10 today. Nice. Alas, a shortbed. The dealer said he'd try to swap for a longbed, but they're hard to find. Crazyelvis-I know the Mohawk Trail, but the Oxbow doesn't ring a bell. We've worked on a couple of power plants on the Deerfield River in Shelburne Falls, and we have friends and relatives in that area. We live about 35 miles down the valley. Mainecowgirl-What a small world. My niece and my sister ride at Stonely-Burnham (the kid went to Northfield-Mt. Hermon). Their horse now boards at UMass. I'll tell her to watch for a red/black SD with Maine plates next summer. (Coming down the road sideways, right?) New favorite bumper sticker: "Honk if you love honking." My son's reply: "Honk if you hate noise pollution."

lilelmo- Did you get hit at all by the ice storm down south? We had one here in Maine a couple of years ago that was unreal. I was without power for 10 days...no water too as I have a well. I actually didn't have any regrets about the whole experience, but a tree limb did crash onto my F150! I was luckier than most in that I have a woodstove and lots of wood. crazyelvis- I used to spend a lot of time with a friend in Greenfield, MA, and we were along the Mohawk Trail all the time. I remember the Oxbow Resort! I still compete my horses at Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield every year. That's a beautiful area.
