Re: Chain-drive Macks [wgrafer]

I lived in Astoria Queens until I was 7 and I think I can recall those green cement trucks and others that delivered ice or (would you believe) coal. I couldn't find any pix of cement mixers but this is close> 1920 Mack AC Dump: Follow the link for a look at the chain drive on a different truck.

First off, I would like to congratulate Mike on a superb job of raising money for charity (and a worthwhile one at that) while having fun. Hopefully, we will be able to join you in the future, maybe even for the next one. We finally sold our house last month; the best news of all...no agent, no commission, and we got our asking price. We are renting the house back for this month and possibly next while we pack up. We just returned from 4 days in Chicago. Michael's drummer had an audition at Elmhurst College and asked Michael to accompany him. We took the opportunity to do the tour of Columbia College's studios and recording facilities, programs, dorms etc. Pretty good place, and the facilities were pretty much on par with Berklee College of Music's facilities. Chicago is a pretty cool (and cold...-3 degrees Sunday morning) ...lots of culture and architecture, good pizza. We stayed at the Hilton on Grant Park. It reminded me of the Waldorf-Astoria, one of our favorite hotels. I saw my old friend (known him since 1962) and spent a nice day at the Chicago Auto Show...some nice cars and concepts there, and I finally got to sit in an STI. The seats were not as bad as I thought, but not as good as the seats in my WRX (2002). They had a red one with silver BBS...pretty comfortable in the back also. In March, Michael auditions for Berklee, and in April, we go up to UMass Lowell for the audition and campus tour. What an exciting time for all of us... Serge P.S. Michael passed his driving permit test, but has to wait to be cleared by Pennsylvania after last summer's "incident".
Re: The current XJ8, L, & Van den Plas [euphonium]

I think the XJ long wheelbase or VDP is a brilliant automobile. I have never driven a car that made me feel more special. The balance of ride and handling, interior, and smoothness is excellent. Even walking into my Jag/LR dealership makes me feel like a king. They are extremely professional and the experience is more like walking into the Waldorf Astoria than into a car dealer. However, as Gregg says, the body styling is not as expressive as the model it replaced - the one with poor quality and cramped interior. I think a styling re-do is critical. On top of that, they need to think outside the box a bit more to gain attention. A 100,000 mile warranty would be good to help offset the old "British car quality" stereotype. Free service for 50,000 miles, a free trip to jolly old England for a tour of the factory, or SOMETHING to really talk about is needed. I am surprised that more Town Car owners haven't replaced their TCs with an XJ. Perhaps fear of quality gremlins or expensive service stands in their way. In any case, this marque should be saved and positioned above Lincoln in the FoMoCo line-up.
Re: 2007 CRV 4WD on beach [yesterdayz]

Just yesterday in Gearhart Oregon( between Seaside and Astoria). The CRV handles ok as long as you stay out of the deep sand as it is not made for that. It is better than a car but not a beachcomber not as good as my Forester. MNF

it is something we've been doing for a number of years. You start out at Battery Park, ride up 6th Ave, through Central Park, into the Bronx, and Back into Manhattan down the FDR drive. You go over the 59th Street bridge, through Astoria, over the Costcusco Bridge and into Brooklyn. You ride on the BQE and over the Verazzano Bridge to Staten Island. It is lots of fun! Do you ride? We do a few rides over the summer/fall. My other car is a TREK.
