Re: Elantra Touring [backy]

Hey Backy- Did your local dealer say anything about the 09 elantra sedan se's? I wonder how late it will be for the new features and suspension and what not. I am aware of the sales event for the holidays and my Allen Samuels Hyundai DF/W here are advertising available 2008 se models for the last few weeks.
Sorry but....

The Aveo still reeks and is essentially a rebadged Daewoo. It's truly awful. Granted the Suzuki Reno is also a bad car and also a Daewoo. The FJ Cruiser has poor visibility that's a fact but it's not really ugly and it's extremely reliable. Poor sales due to low fuel economy. I don't think the Dodges are all that ugly either. Some less than others, but overall not horrible. The Aveo is a real competitor to the Yugo and is about as reliable. It's ugly, unreliable, uncomfortable and gets poor fuel economy. I would give a Nod also to the Suzuki Reno as another piece of rebadged crap. Why can't Suzuki bring the Swift Sport to the US? Besides a Truck isn't a car and most trucks look Butch, and most look like trucks. The SmartCar is also another ugly car and I like hatchbacks! I hate VW's because of poor reliability but I like the look of the Golf and the new Jetta Sportwagen. The Smart Car is a waste of money but some people like the look, it's retro-futuristic. All it needs is Woody Allen to make it complete. Aveo = Total Crap Yugo Wannabe
97 Catera Timing Belt Change
by joe161 on Thu Nov 13 14:25:46 PST 2008
I have exposed the subject belt and have the following questions: 1)Does the special tool GM uses for this do more than secure the sprockets and crank shaft? 2)Does the cam sprockets tend to rotate when the belt is removes from valve spring force? 3)How fragile are the sprockets and will they stand any stress from securing them other than with the special tool? 4)How do I manipulate the tensioners to remove and reinstall the belt. The top center tensioner has an hex face. Can I turn this to release tension. The side tensioner has a nut and allen head recess. How is this tension released? Thanking you in advance for your help Regards, Joe

Replaced Timing Belt
by premad on Sun Nov 09 03:42:51 PST 2008
Just wanted add a post about changing a timing belt on an 05 Aveo. It is pretty simple but you need the right tools. I purchased aftermarket parts (timing belt, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and water pump for $170.00) and they fit like a fine tuned glove. They guy I bought the kit from gave me a copy of the instruction from the GM manual which helped a lot. Some things to note for the DIYers. You will need to remove the engine mount in order to get the belt off which was not noted in the instructions but real simple. When removing the motor mount you will need to put a jack under the motor so it does not fall to the ground!! I used my jack and put a 2x4 across the oil pan and AC unit to hold the motor up. If you replace the water pump in the process you will need to pull off the rear timing belt cover which is a pain and the upper bolts need to come off which are behind the top cam gears. So before you remove the belt spin the gears and remove the 2 top bolts then remove the belt! Note that when you pull the belt off, the top gears move out of position by 1 tooth and the car will run like crap if this happens. Happened to me on the first try!!! What I did was, I put the belt on the bottom gear first then slide it on to the top right cam gear and then aligned the top timing marks back up by rotating the left gear in place and then slid the belt on the left gear. Took a couple tries until I got the hang of it but was not too bad. Another thing to note is you NEED the water pump tool or you will not be able to tighten or loosen the timing belt. I bought a Daewoo version of the tool which was 70.00 vs 112.oo gor the GM tool and it worked perfect! It is a 42mm wrench and is bent so you can get a rachet on it. The tool is a must have along with a tourqe wrench if you are going to replace the belt yourself. Don't forget to have a 5mm allen wrench on a socket so you can tourqe the water down. Hope this helps other DIYers!
New '08 Spectra owner
by qcspectra on Sat Nov 08 07:47:28 PST 2008
7,000 miles on my new '08 Spectra EX w/manual transmission. Absolutely loving it. Daily driving is 65% city / 35% highway. Averaging 32 mpg, with a high of 35 and a low of 26, well over the EPA 23/30. Great shifter. High-quality interior. Roomy front and back seats. Quite ride. Responsive steering and brakes. Great dealer experience (Courtesy Kia in Moline, IL) at purchase (Allen Rutledge rocks) and subsequently from the service dept. Cross-shopped the '08 Civic, Mazda3, Corolla, Elantra and Cobalt. The Cobalt was a joke. As far as the other 4, I found the Spectra to be more comfortable, more roomy, quieter, had more features, a better warranty, and a better price. My only concern is eventual resale value and the horror stories I've read about Kia not standing behind the too-good-to-be-true warranty. We bought an '07 Sedona EX new and this '08 Spectra EX. Dealer has been fantastic with any warranty issues.
