My Top (Bottom?) 5
by uofmg35 on Tue Nov 18 06:04:46 PST 2008
I can't pick one, so I'll try 5: - Dodge Nitro - Mini Clubman (aren't Mini's supposed to be... mini?) - Hummer anything (like John Madden, this brand justs need to retire) - Chrysler Aspen - Acura TL Not sure if this was limited to only all new 2009 models. If so, my vote is for the TL. Besides the horrible styling, it's now also overweight and overpriced. Nice job Acura. Maybe if you add more buttons to the dash your problems will be solved...
Re: No issues (yet) with RFTs [xeye]
by mjbauer on Sun Nov 16 09:55:15 PST 2008
Well I have to concur, but also add a qualifier. I have an 08 335xi with Bridgestone EL42's all four are 225/45 17's. And they are great so far with about 12000 miles on them. My initial concern stemmed from being a passenger in an 06 325 with the stock runflats. They were so noisy at low speeds in city driving I was very concerned about using them. I wound up test driving two 335xi's to double check the noise but they sounded like regular tires to me, no nosier than my wife's car and not as noisy as my M3 with Pilot Sports That being said, I will likely opt for snow tires as here in Michigan where we live we get enough snow to make good snows a valuable option I can understand completely the concern on the RFT's. I think that the early versions were terrible. I do believe BMW (and other manufacturers) made the decision for several reasons. First is cost, eliminating a tire and a wheel saves money. Packaging, if you don't have to find the space for a tire and wheel you get a lot of space back. Another reason is us. We don't like to be inconvenienced at all so stopping and changing a tire is not something we like to do. I suspect I drive a bit more aggressively than xeye but so far so good. I do not get the same level of handling as my M3 with the Michelin Pilot sports but I don't use that handling very often on the street very often in all honesty. So far the RFT's have worked very well for me so this short note is just my $.02 worth (and likely less valuable than that :-)

You can't really compost meat scraps unless you cook them first, and even then you risk attracting rats and other critters. "Democrats are fighting over control of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the outcome could affect President-elect Obama's efforts to limit the heat-trapping gases blamed for global warming." And what's the underlying fight? Waxman of California vs. Dingell of Michigan for the energy chair (guess who doesn't want stricter mpg standards?). Party tussle ensnares Obama's global warming goals (AP)
Re: The Case for Bankruptcy [62vetteefp]

The case in your post will be made today to Nancy Pelosi and Congress for additional help (loans) in addition to the $25B earmarked for the industry. I expect some additional help is approved soon. After the election, chances for bailout improved over Bankruptcy. Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC chief executive officers, who have urged the government to provide billions of dollars of aid, will meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today in Washington, according to people familiar with the matter. United Auto Workers President Ronald Gettelfinger is also scheduled to participate in the meeting with Pelosi, a California Democrat, the people said. Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Energy Department said today it has set the interim rules for how automakers can apply for as much as $25 billion in federal loans to help cover the costs of producing more energy-efficient vehicles. ``Issuance of this interim final rule opens the process for automakers and component manufacturers to immediately apply for government funding under the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program,'' Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said in an e-mailed statement. The department completed the guidelines in about half the 60-day period required by Congress, potentially giving carmakers quicker access to funds. Members of Congress, including House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell of Michigan, pressed the department to move quickly on the rules to help struggling U.S. automakers. The three largest U.S. automakers, Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., and Chrysler LLC could submit applications for government loans as soon as the rule is published in the Federal Register. The interim guidelines do not limit how much any one loan applicant can receive of the $25 billion. Also,Toyota reported half of it's expected profits for 2008 evaporated and was quite surprised. The situation will get worse before it gets better as the recession thickens. Regards, OW

It's easy to leave a browser open, sure. I do realize that Edmunds isn't an e-commerce site (unless you count the InfoPaks you can buy ;-). But, regardless of the type of site, all sites are there to generate traffic. Whether it's to get sales or forum posts. And this site is open 24x7 as well. Tell me that this authentication issue is not affecting forum posts. I guess my thing with this is there's been a lot of futzing with the site for quite a while now. Just when you think it's all fixed, they change something. BTW, Sylvia says this latest snafu was a top level security change, not just affecting the TH. Took 'em 4 or 5 days just to put up a red disclaimer about the issue. -Brian

e-commerce site worked on 24x7 eh? well that's just it Brian, we're not direct revenue by any means. we're providing some sort of nebulous value to Edmunds, and maybe once in a while someone clicks an ad link not by mistake. how much money are they going to throw at a situation like that? I'm sure they don't consider it an outage either, it's an annoyance. btw here's how you deal with the annoyance: leave your browser window open. if you need another browser window, open one, but keep edmunds page loaded and after reading all your subscriptions just minimize it. later when you come back, hit read subscriptions and viola! it works. surely your session with the webcluster has timed out by then, so you're actually re-authenticating... but it works and coming in from a new browser session does not. I'd have this fixed in no time with a file watching utility and a sniffer... problem is easily duplicated and the method I describe above works great so comparing what's happening differently between the two should be a breeze. ~Colin
