boilermaker2: I reside in central Missouri and we have 4 WM's within a 50 mile radius. I personally saw the 5q 5-40w Mobil syn. SUV/TRUCK oil for just a hair under $21.00 This was about Feb 20th. I called the Walmart in Osage Beach, Mo and they still had it in mid March. I changed my mind about letting them change it and took it to the dealer. I asked if they carried the 0-40w and they could not even order it. Whats even more odd is O'Reilly Auto Parts carries the 0-40 in stock but can't get the 5-40. Last week I bought the last 3 qts of the $1.49 Mobil 5-30w oil for our Neon last week. They have changed to cover and it's not extended 5-30w for $2.49. The label change most likely cost a lot more, don't ya know? Anything is likely when a auto parts can make more profit by getting rid of the best buy for consumers. I hope this is not the case, but I try to check it out again next time I am in WM. Farout

Farout, I have been following you fuel mileage discussion and I think you might get a pleasant surprise if you go on a trip in warm weather on straight #2 diesel. If I drive from Osage Beach to Laurie when there is almost no traffic and not too many red lights I get around 25 mpg. When I do the same drive and there is a lot of traffic I am lucky to get 22 mpg. When I drive from Laurie to Sedalia early in the morning or late at night, when I can go with the flow of the hills, 26 to 27 mpg is easy. On the interstate at 65 mph, 29 to 32 mpg is usual on cruise for 100 mile stretches. Catch a tail wind and 32 mpg at 70 mph is realistic. The point is I think we are getting the same mileage under the same conditions.

This might be a little late but I'd recommend going with a GM van. My dad bought a 1985 Econoline brand new from factory (Osage vans). Wasn't happy with it so sold in 87 and replaced with an 82 GMC conversion a couple years later. Gave a few good years of service before sold. I bought my first van in 2003, a 1993 Chevy G20 Tiara conversion. It's a great van and I'm very happy with it. I'd like to keep it forever but eventually will trade up to a newer model. Looks like Explorer will be the next one. $8500 sounds a little high for a '98 van. Demand for conversion vans is at an all time low so it's really a buyers' market. I've seen 01/02 Chevy vans for less than that. Vans offer so much more comfort for much less cost than a SUV. The depr. is steep if purchasing brand new, but it's pretty bad on SUV's now too. Good luck though - welcome to the van club.

Alljeep, go to the Energy 24 station in Greenfield located off of Osage Street (south of the town square on SR 9, look for the grain elevator to the east as you drive south on 9). As of yesterday, it was still $3.359 and they blend biodiesel. If this isn't enough, you can stay on SR 9 for another 1/4 mile south and pay $.40 more/gallon for sludge.

There is a good chance it is the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). This is on the intake, on the left upper side of the motor. It is a black and silver cylinder somewhat longer than a 35mm film canister, with wires into it. It is bolted into the intake.   It can be removed and cleaned, sometimes stopping this problem. It is a valve the meters air, and an electrical solenoid that moves the air. Clean it with carb cleaner, but hold it so the cleaner does not get into the electrical part of it. If you are careful, it can be removed without destroying its gasket.   A dirty IAC will also cause high, low, or wandering idles. A new one is about $60 or so if you want to replace it.   I would think you could put your hand on it with the truck running when it is humming, and feel it vibrating.
