Diesels command higher prices
by tagman on Tue Jul 24 10:51:40 PDT 2007
This, from Automotive News: (subscription required, so I'm posting the entire article for those that do not subscribe) Buyers are bidding up prices of used vehicles with fuel-saving diesel engines, industry analysts say. A diesel engine added about $1,000 to the roughly $50,000 sticker price of a new 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI sedan. Two years later, that option fetches $2,500 more at wholesale auctions than the gasoline-powered engine on the same model, the Black Book used-vehicle price guide reports. "As American consumers, we're looking to get better fuel economy, but we still want that full-sized vehicle," says Black Book managing editor Ricky Beggs. "The technology is so much better today, and the versatility and the accessibility to get diesel fuel are there." The Power Information Network estimates that U.S. consumers will buy more than 500,000 vehicles with diesel engines this year. The network predicts that figure will more than double by 2011. Except for a few thousand Mercedes cars and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs, all diesels sold as new in the United States this year will be in heavy-duty pickups. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Premium diesel Diesel engines are not only holding but increasing their value as an option on used vehicles. These are calculations of the percentage of value retained by diesel engines on 2-year-old vehicles, compared with when the 2005 models were sold as new. 2005 Model % of Retained value Mercedes E320 CDI 250% VW Jetta GLS 164% Ford F-250 127% VW New Beetle GLS 121% Chevrolet Silverado 117% Dodge Ram 2500 104% Jeep Liberty 82% Source: Black Book --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Gaining acceptance But several automakers plan to introduce diesel-powered cars and light trucks to the United States by 2010. Strong resale values for used diesels signal consumer interest and acceptance, Beggs told Automotive News. Of six 2005 models reviewed by Black Book, five showed increases in the value of their diesel engines in the used-car market. The sixth, the 2005 Jeep Liberty, has a diesel engine valued at $2,200 - 82 percent of its original sticker price, Black Book says. John Blair, CEO of Automotive Lease Guide, agrees that diesel engines are appreciating but warns that could change. As automakers introduce more diesel-powered cars, he says, the growing supply of used diesel cars will ease prices. "In the future, the value is going to be lower, given the greater volume of diesels being produced and the increased competition with hybrids," says Blair, whose company sets residual values for the auto industry. Volkswagen of America Inc. says it will reintroduce diesel engines in its Jetta and other models next year. VW did not offer diesel engines in most 2007 models, while it modified its technology to meet U.S. emissions rules for new low-sulfur diesel fuel. Supply and demand Terrence Wynne, director of ana-lytical services at NADA Analytical Services Group, says VW's actions reduced the supply of new diesel-powered vehicles. That helped drive up prices of used diesels, he says. An optional diesel engine added $1,220 to the base price of a new 2005 Jetta GLS, Black Book says. The diesel now commands roughly a $2,000 price premium for the same car as a used vehicle. Diesels also are holding their own in the market for used heavy-duty trucks. Automotive Lease Guide's Blair says a diesel engine typically adds $6,000 to the sticker price of a new full-sized pickup. After 36 months, he estimates, the diesel engines will keep 60 percent of their value as an option, while the trucks themselves will retain only 47 percent of their value. Glenn Romines, a Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealer in Houston, Mo., says he sells 7 to 10 used diesel pickups a month. This month, he says, he paid $23,000 for a 2002 Ford F-350 - about $2,000 more than its guidebook wholesale value. Romines says he sold the truck for $24,500 - roughly $1,500 more than its prevailing retail price. He says: "It was a good deal for everybody." TagMan

The '03's have an electric fan. IIRC, the load on the electrical system was to great to use it before. Not sure what was changed between then and now. Mine is still fine, BTW...65K and counting. I didn't know the early ones were troublesome! I'll have to keep an eye on that. Any warning signs to look out for? You'll be unsurprised to hear, though, that my automatic transmission is a casualty of war, so to speak. A rather brutal tint shop employee dropped it into drive from reverse and shredded it, or so I imagine. He, obviously, won't fess up. He did a nice job on the tint, though! Extended warranty will cover replacement, so I'm not TOO upset. Though I've got a Taurus SE until it's fixed...sometime next week. MANIA IV was blast! The run around Waterford Hills with all the other LS's was a sight to behold. Brings tears to the eyes. One of the members (ErikH) did a 720 on the back straight @~70MPH and missed the concrete barrier by inches. That was tense few seconds...last run of the day, too. Several others spun out into the grass & dirt. I managed to keep it going forward but did put all four in the dirt once. We even got to see Alex (the suspension engineer) blow a test engine on the track! Shot a connecting rod clear through the block! I was really hoping to see you there. Finally asked where you'd been... I was sorry to hear about...stuff... I always enjoyed your outlook on things. Take care. I'll check in here from time to time. OH! Brian bought a BRAND NEW 2002 manual a couple weeks ago...one of the very last ones still on a dealer lot...with a little locating help from...uh...friends. Had it trucked in from somewhere in the central US, I think. He got a chance to drive Bill Beggs' manual at MANIA and fell in love. "Prima Donna" has almost 120K on her now so he was starting to consider something new anyway. 'Donna has been retired from daily-driver status and given over to full-time-club-project-car status.
Suggestions for Tires ? 30K checkuo?
by dry_fly on Tue Jul 16 10:38:31 PDT 2002
Hi: I have Yokohama H/T tires on my Forester S. They only have 27000 miles on them, but seem pretty worn down (eyeball). I am thinking of replacing them. I live in Oregon so there are both national and local tire dealers here: Firestone, Sears, Les Schwab, Beggs, Big O. I have looked on the web, and it seems that the Michelin Pilot XGT V4 or H4 are good tires, but expensive. should I get these or are the local/regional companies as good? I am coming up to the 30K mile checkup. It looks like they will change fuel filters, plugs, check brakes, and several other things I don't recollect. Are there items I should get or not get? It looks like they will change the air filter, but a friend recommended getting a K&N air filter which he says will last a lifetime. I don't know this brand, any comments? Thanks for any help. BTW, my previous problem with the Check Engine Light was because the gas cap was not on tight enough. The dealer also tighten the charcoal filter clamps and the fuel filter clamps.
V 6 owner update
by weathermanbob1 on Tue Jun 05 15:55:28 PDT 2001
Hello, My name is Bob Clarke I own a 99 V6 auto. It was 2 year sold last month and I have 48000 miles on it. This is one great car! I love it. I always wanted a Camry and have not been disappointed with it at all. The V6 is great Powerful and smooth. The transmission continues to shift smoothly even though I don't baby the car. I accelerate swiftly the majority of the time. This car just beggs you to use the engine. I have had no problems at all for the last 25k miles. the transmission actually shifts better than it did at 30k. I haven't even had any minor problems since the seat belt retracter was replaced around 20 I because it was rattling. One of the things even though minor is that i think the floor mats leave alot to be desired the carpet just does'nt hold up very well. I have heard on this site that the ones for the Lexes are much better and should fit. I highly reccomend, especially for the V6, is to use fuel system cleaners at least every 6 k miles. And keep your cars clean and waxed. Happy motoring Bob
