My respect for the athletic achievers...

(marathon runners, long distance bikers, etc.) on this board grew this weekend. On Saturday I took my kids to a local bike shop and helped out the area's economy. We left with a 24" Giant 21spd hybrid bike for Emily, and a Burley Bee trailer for Annie. At 9 years old, Emily was hitting her knees on the handlebars of her 5spd 20" bike (the kid has incredibly long legs), so a new bike was a must. The trailer is quite neat - folds flat, including removable wheel, and attaches to the frame of my Trek right before the rear wheel. The multi-pivot joint allows full freedom of movement when I ride. On Sunday, we loaded up the OBW (trailer inside), bikes on the hitch carrier, and headed for the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in Northeastern Dutchess County. We did about 5.25 miles when I deciced it was time to head back (10.5 miles total). It is a hilly area, but rail lines typically do not exceed 4% grades. The outbound ride was overall down hill, the way back up hill. Temps were upper 70's. No, for you hardcore bikers, this would be a walk in the park. For those of us rediscovering pedal power, it was a great challenge, that left me and my two kids smiling from ear to ear. We did the ride with another family (also with two kids from China), ended the day with dinner at the Millerton Diner, and then roadside ice cream. We all slept well.... Steve
