Overview of an 07 Honda FIT With 47K Miles (MPG, etc)
by xcentrick on Tue Aug 26 21:21:12 PDT 2008
For the benefit of those wanting to "look ahead" and see how the Honda FIT car is holding up, especially MPG, here are my experiences so far. I have recently turned 47K miles on my '07 FIT Sport. It is automatic, shifts very well, no downshift problems. I have made no modifications to this car. I drive the car 115 freeway miles/day, 50% stop and go, other 50% fast, up to 80+ MPH on So. Ca. freeways. So far, all systems are still working like new. The car got a very consistent 30 MPG up to 40K miles. Suddenly, it started going up to 33MPG and then as high as 35MPG. Avg. now is 33.5 MPG. AC on or off, doesn't seem to matter, all freeway driving. I haven't done the idle reset procedure yet. One thing will help, stay back about 6-8 lengths from the car in front of you=less erratic slowing/restarting, thus less gas used. Also, use the right paddle to get into the higher gears quicker on takeoff and the left paddle to pass or speed up at cruising speeds instead of flooring the gas pedal. For those considering the free flowing, washable, re-oilable, lifetime warranty air filter to save MPG I bought one and didn't get any MPG or performance improvement. Payback=~100K miles. Tires (Dunlops) holding up excellent, will probably get 55-60K miles on them. Run @ 32 PSI. I reworked the front brakes myself @ 40K miles. The surprise here was that even though my pads still had 2 MM on them, both front rotors were worn below spec. Fortunately, they aren't that expensive to replace. I replaced the pads with ceramic and there is zero fade, chatter or squeel. It stops extremely fast! For those having the windshield wiper chatter problem. The fix is to simply tweak the wiper arm a little using a small crescent (sp?) wrench. If the lip of the blade touching the windshield gets ahead of the body of the blade, it will chatter or skip. So, just very slightly bend the arm until the lip tails the body of the blade. The chatter will stop. For those experiencing the dash noise (in cold weather), I did come across a thread where a fix was found. I'll dig it out and post a reference if you need it. In summary, this is my 4th Honda. The 1st three have all ran well over 275 miles with few problems. I still have my '86 CRX HF 5 speed with 310K original miles I've owned since new. Still gets 43 MPG, 155# flat and it flies. The main thing with these small cars is to follow the factory maintenance recommendations very closely. You'll have many years of good performance out of the FIT and most other Hondas if you do. They are virtually bullet proof if you take care of them.
Re: S-10 Ran fine till got home - Update
by magnum1b on Thu Jul 24 08:14:21 PDT 2008
I have a 99 S10 with the 2.2 L. I think it's jumped timing. The wife drove it home Monday running fine. I went to get gas and it fired once and then wouldn't start. It cranked fine. It has ignition, fuel to the rail and all the normal things I would try. When I tried a little ether into the throttle body it backfired flames. I can also feel back pressure pulses when I crank it coming from the throttle body. I know next to nothing about these engines but am an A&P Mechanic and have worked many other engines in my time. I have a Manual (Haynes I think). In trying to remove the fan to get to the timing chain I am stumped as to how to get the bug nut loose which holds the fan and fan clutch. Looks like I need about a 1 7/16 open end or 18" Crescent wrench and an adjustable pin spanner to hold the pulley from turning. If anyone has an idea of something I should check before digging further into the engine I would greatly appreciate any help. I bought a code reader and it gave me a P0420 but I put a new cat on it in April 2008. I removed it to see it I could see anything and other than the O2 sensor possibly being bad I see nothing wrong. The manual says the engine runs open loop till the O2 hits 600 degrees so that shouldn't cause it to not start at all. Help! Jack Ferguson Atlanta, GA

Re: Radiator Draincock [shipo]
by stromi on Mon Jun 30 14:10:20 PDT 2008
I have a 2000 Dodge Caravan. The draincock was very difficult to open but opens in the counter clockwise direction. (closed is horizontal). I used a small crescent wrench. After I changed the antifreeze, the draincock leaked. Thanks to this forum I figured out I was not alone. I took the advice given here of buying a draincock (about $6) and this helped me understand how to get the old one out. It is not 1/4 turn and pull, but instead just shy of 1/2 turn and then wiggle. It will come out. I would say it is about 160 degrees out of 180 degrees, with 180 degrees being a 1/2 turn. If you turn it more than 1/2 turn, it will damage the draincock. The o-ring in mine was broken. After removing the draincock, I pulled out a few pieces of broken o-ring out of the housing, lightly lubricated the new draincock with silicone lubricant, and it went back in just fine with some wiggling. I agree with shade tree mechanic, just pulling the bottom hose is much less hassle.
Re: Fuel Filter [dkurrle]
by the_big_al on Mon Oct 16 21:39:06 PDT 2006
Fuel Filters are very simple to change. Changing the filter will probably eliminate a suspect in a rough idle, but may not fix the rough idle. The filter is under the driver's side, next to the frame rail on the inside. You will need some shop rags, a pair of pliers, an adjustable crescent wrench, or a wrench set (I can't remember the exact size) and a plan to bleed off the fuel pressure, unless of course you enjoy spraying your self with fuel. Disconnect the battery and relieve the fuel pressure. Under the hood there is a pressure releif valve (it's a schrader valve, similar to a valve stem on a tire). You can get a kit at parts store that will capture the fluid or you can use the shop rags and hold them over the valve while you depress the pin. Honestly, I would get the kit. After my last experience changing my filter I wouldn't go any other way. Once you have relieved the fuel pressure, crawl under the truck and change the filter by loosening the nut on the tank side and with the pliers pinching the release tabs on the the motor side of the filter and remove the filter. Have a couple of shop rags and or a small pan to catch the residual fluid that will drain out of the lines. Install the new filter and make sure your connections are tight, then make sure all the gas is cleaned up from both under the vehicle and under the hood (if needed spray degreaser and hose off. You don't want gas puddled somewhere in the engine bay.) Make sure your pressure relief kit is removed and the cap covering the relief valve replaced. Reconnect the battery and turn on the key. Let the pump run (the whine you hear when you first turn the key) till it shuts off to build up a little bit pressure then crank the motor to start the truck. The truck will take longer to start than normal as you have emptied the gas lines and so it will take a few cranks to get the truck started. But once the truck is started, make sure there are no leaks in the fuel system. Don't stick your head under the truck in case the you accidently didn't tighten something properly and the minute you stick your head under there it decides to come apart. Just look without sticking your head under the vehicle. That's all there is to changing a fuel filter. Pretty simple and should only take about 10-15 minutes. Unless you are like me and didn't relieve the fuel pressure so that the minute you release the plastic tab fuel sprays backwards into your face, down your neck, up your nose, down your ears, thankfully not in the eyes. Lesson learned :D Doh. Anyway, I had done it before without relieving the pressure with out such incident but such was not the case the second time... never again !...

I own a 2008 Honda Fit Sport. I have a small crescent-shaped crack in the bottom left corner of my windsheild. I'm not sure if a rock hit it or not. I kind of just looked and it was there. I'm suprised there are so many similar problems. I'm going to try and get the dealer to fix it.
