B-J is a show. No question about that and I buy into it as I find much of it entertaining. Guilty as charged. But, at the end of the day, when all the hoopla has died down, real cars have changed hands for real money. So, even though it is conducted under a big top (literally) in a circus-like atmosphere (though not as outlandish as a Russo & Steele auction), its still a business. To get back on point, I wonder how (or if) the business of collector auctions will be as successful as they apparently are today, given the downward direction of the hobby that is being predicted here. Personally, I don't think the collector car market has anything to worry about in my lifetime (I'm 50). People will always want old stuff and cars are usually at, or near, the top of a lot of guys (and gals) list. From what I can see, the public's interest in collector cars seems to be getting stronger, not weaker. As an example, just this week, the History channel debuted a new show (Desert Car Kings) about a salvage yard in Arizona where they take an old car in bad shape and fix it up in two weeks and sell it at auction. That's just one of several cars about old cars that weren't on air a few years ago. TV networks spend a lot of money researching to provide programs the public wants (though that still doesn't explain Laverne & Shirley!) and there's apparently a big enough demand from the public to warrant that investment.
Ha...I remember watching Laverne and Shirley as a kid, and the 70s styles threw me off so much I didn't even know they were supposed to be in the 50s, rather I thought they were just eccentric. It wasn't until when a Happy Days character was on the show that I got it. I remember street scenes with old cars, and just assumed the 50s cars were boring used cars in the 70s.
Andre you sound about my age so you might remember that through that entire time there was the concern that at anytime the Soviets were going to drop the big one on us and there was no hope. Well, I was born in 1970. Conceived in 1969 (which is where the "1969" in my ID comes from :P ) I remember as a kid being really scared of killer bees. And that Iran hostage crisis was a pretty scary time. And I think "The Day After" scared the hell out of a lot of us kids in the early 80's! I guess we kinda knew the 70's were going to suck when the decade started off with a bigot and a dingbat sitting down in front of a piano and singing about how Kate Smith really sang a song, hair was short and skirts were long, and we don't know just what went wrong, "Those were the days!" That period in time really did start to seem nostalgic for the old days. There was "American Graffiti", "Happy Days", "Laverne and Shirley". And even "Three's Company" tried to make you think back to a simpler time, when life is a ball again, laughter is calling for you. Down at our Rendezvous. :P
My first computer setup (monitor, separate hard drive & daisy wheel printer) was named Patty, Maxine and Laverne. After the gals gave up (well, Patty and Maxine died, Laverne found a new home) I stopped naming computers. I do have a 1930s Art Deco vanity named Albert, and my 1920s purple Deco sofa is name The Diva Divan. Previous cars have been Lil'Red (Skylark), Prissy (Calais), Jolene (Cutlass Supreme) and now I have Adelaide. I don't believe I've named any other inanimate objects in my possession.
....... Mornin' Jason ..... Good description, thanks ... from the home of Laverne and Shirley we have a 00 LS V8 with 90k (ouch.!) black with tan guts, combo is good for the area, no slider (it's 00, so cd is in the glove.? changed in April production) and we have the bun warmers .... What can I say, we need new sneakers and the looker is cracked, we have bunches of miles and no slider .. if the serivice is 100%, no paint by numbers .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $8's, "maybe" might get lucky and get a dealer to go over the top and drop the low low low low low $9's in it, maybe - this poor thing needs some stuff ........... ;) Terry.
