gator: Just got back from a run to New Mexico around Taos. Interesting country. I like the adobe look, but when they make Wal-Mart and McDonald's fake an adobe look, it just seems wrong. I think now that I can say I have seen the world's largest(Vinita, OK) and smallest golden arches (Taos). We Americanos brag on our cultural diversity and at the same time force entire communities to adopt a cultural lock-step look. We would have the tourists rolling in the streets if it weren't for the fact that their coutries are often worse about it. quaddub: Been a Nascar fan from the late sixties on. Started as a Woods brothers fan in the heyday of the 21 Merc. Now I am a Jarrett fan. Somehow, it does seem right to see the Petty 43 on a Dodge again. BTW, real men don't do Lite. Now if you will excuse me, I have to get a diet coke.

Just got back from Galveston. Average over the 1500+ miles 16.4. Found a W-M in Huntsville with $1,339 gas and at least four Quads in the parking lot. (2-green, 1-black and 1-f.red) five includig mine. We considered staying in a motel around Vinita and found the rates to range from $25-40 for moderate non-smoking rooms, 2 adults, queen beds. The $40 was for a new Super 8 at Big Cabin. Expect a little higher in season rates, but not bad.
NEWS!
by samg42 on Mon Jul 31 02:32:17 PDT 2000
This steve234 again. This is going to be a long message, but I don't think anyone will mind. I have details! Yesterday I was waiting to unload. Last night whenI checked, there was no record of my truck at BNSF which I assumed meant I was unloaded. One of my B-I-Ls called this mornig. He was making a grocery run and drove by the dealer. He did a double take and made a U-turn in the middle of the street. There were two new bronze Qs and one of them had my name on it. After a long, long talk with my wife, the chores were forsaken and we made the 130+ mile run to Vinita. 105 minutes. Aren't turnpikes wonderful? For what everyone is interested in, the only change to the SLT front is the front air dam has two additional openings below and inside of the fog lamp position. Still that gray color (going to talk to the dealer about a bit of painting). That is the ONLY exterior body change. The tires are 255/65R16 Goodyears. The mags have changed slightly and I like the look better. They do not have that U shape where the spokes meet the hub. MSRP: The base price for 2wd has gone from 19,250 to 19,465, a $215 increase. The SLT plus package went from 1,275 to 1,305. The 4.7, Auto, 3.92 axle, lsd, tow pkg, HD svc grp, dest., were all the old price. Interesting, I ordered the 6x9 mirrors and did not see a charge for them. However, the other bronze Q that came in was the same except did not have the tow options and had the 5x7s. The interior: I could not get in, but I liked what I saw. The taupe looks real good. There are some major changes. The dash is flatter on top and does not have the multiple recessed defroster openings. There is one long flush vent in the center. On the passenger side, there is a shelf on top of the dash for placing items. The front of the dash is not as bulging looking but looks decent. I got the impression that there may be more leg room. The center of the dash is totally different. The radio is moved up and the A/C controls are below mounted horizontally. The knobs and makings are slightly different. The center vents are now on both sides of the radio pod. Two on each side with a tiny cubbyhole at the botton. A guess is that the left cubbyhole may be where the 4wd control may go. The dash looked basically the same from what I could see. The old floor console is totally gone as is the front pull out drink holder in the bench. A new deeper floor console, narrower in front than back, with a tray in front and back and two adjustable drink holders in the middle. The doors are completely changed. Instead of the oval fabric segment, the fabric covers the back half of the door in a rectangle several inches down. The door pull is changed from a ring pull to lever. The look of the door is flatter with a new arm rest that goes from front to back. Instead of the pod that houses the windows, doors and mirrors, the controls are on the arm rest. The door locks are now a slider style above the arm rest and below the door opener. The map pockets are basically full door wide with two decent pockets in the back and a short shallow pocket in front to house the speaker. Some may prefer the old interior, but I like the new look. One thing that I appreciated was both of the Qs had teh beds perfectly aligned with the cabs. My wife is staying with her sister for the week and she is going to do the preliminary inspection and paperwork. I break free on Thursday and go to pick it up. FYI we did not just go and check out the Q for you guys, we had a bunch of the family come down and we had a BBQ and took a run on the ATVs. It has been a wild and wooly day.

I just talked to my new dealer on Monday. My 01 is already in D-1 and has a ship date of 7-14. I would say the regional manager was serious about me getting the first one. I still do not know anything more about the changes to the front end or how much this will cost, but this service is nice. Of course, the owner was telling about a Ram pickup that was lost for weeks and found in the wilderness of New Jersey and of two Caravans that they had on the books for a year before being found in a warehouse in Canada. The fun part is that the train with my truck will travel through Vinita where the dealer is and travel another 150-200 miles to OKC to be loaded onto a truck for the haul back to Vinita. Based on our estimates, I may be picking up my new toy on my birthday on Aug 3 (a mere 48). Now to convince my wife and everyone that the Q is not my only present that I should receive.
2001 and counting

The latest on my tragedy (to me at least) is that the district manager is going to make sure that I get the first 2001 Quad in his 5-state district. It still looks like I'm going to lose several hundred on the deal, but they are working on it. Right now, I have nothing but praise for the 5-star dealership in Vinita, OK. They seem to really making a solid effort on my behalf. What you guys may be interested in, is that the dealer got his 2001 spec sheets in for the Dakota. My wife happen in just as they arrived and the dealer made a copy for her to check for any changes that might affect us. More on that later. They also said that Monday is the first day to order the 2001 Dakotas. Nothing about build dates. The estimate is that there is going to be about a $300+ price increase over the 2000. This weekend, I will look over the paperwork to see if I have to adjust my order before Monday. I might get at least a little lemonade out of this. It is always good to find a dealer that you can have confidence in.
SLTvsSport

Themacguy: While I like the look of the Sport, I found the offering with the SLT package too good to pass up. In Oklahoma the bugs are a pain , but they can be cleaned, its the flying chips from semis and Texans that make the chrome a better deal. I just wonder what it is with not getting matching paint on the air dam in the SLTs. BTW, where do you go to ski. I make two trips each year to CO and have never needed anything but my F150 SC 2WD and no LSD. Firstdodge: There are good dealers/mechanics and bad dealers/mechanics. Where I live, I would not take anything to the dealers. I bought my 91 Ford here in Stillwater and they would never fix anything right and would never get to it on the day they said. I found an excellent Ford dealership in Vinita and would be a customer of their's for life if the Supercrew was what I needed. You have to do your homework and find a good shop and the best mechanics. I always specify the mechanic to work on my trucks. It is a shame that there are so many bad dealerships out there, but there are some good ones, you just have to find them.
