Re: Service Engine light right after spark plug change [fischerjones]
by pathstar1 on Thu Jan 19 07:19:22 PST 2006
It was probably the plug change that did it. It actually may go out after a few weeks. It's possible the new plugs have increased combustion temp. and that has loosened built up "crud" in the engine. If the light is for O2 sensors. You may also want to check the O2 sensor connectors - you may have disturbed them during the plug change. It's not the easiest vehicle to change plugs on. It could also be thread goo applied to the plugs so they don't seize. As I said, the computer is set very sensitive. The fuel will trigger the light. I use the 10% ethanol fuel all the time (92 octane from Mohawk and Husky in Canada). My light stays off most of the time (except that one fillup in Hinton last fall).

You are getting an artificial intake leak from your egr valve probably. It is sticking and probably letting exhaust lean out the mixture, which is causing your missing and bucking. I would replace the egr valve. Cheap if you do it yourself. The reason it clears up sometimes is it probably stops sticking, and then all of the sudden it sticks and leans the motor out. Hope it helps.

This seems like EGR valve cleaning and may be also intake unit cleaning, you do not need to change the EGR valve, just clean it. If you can do it yourself do it, it is not that hard or get it done at dealership/Autoshop/

98 Trooper. Runs fine for an hour or so. Starts bucking when excelerating at any speeds. Stop, turn ignition off and right back on and engine will run fine for a few minutes, even an hour or so before bucking again. Changed fuel filter but no effect. Thinking it may be a dirty screen on the pick up tube in the fuel tank. Check engine light has been on for a while. Code indicate poor air flow in the EGR valve. Problem just recently started though. Any thoughts?

Hi Gilespenn: ___Thank you for the first hand review and add that it was a great post as well. In particular, your Hwy mileage! Please keep us informed in regards to the 04 Prius’ hwy mileage after a few miles are accumulated as well as its ride comfort, rear head room, overall performance, and how much you like your new car :) ___I am personally interested in your hwy mileage as it shouldn’t take much to receive 55 to 60 mpg on the hwy with a little help from your friends in the rigs if you know what I mean ... Don’t forget to get those tires inflated ASAP as it can only help with the Prius’ hwy efficiency and to lower its CO2 output. ___On a slightly different note, I received one of the better overall hwy mileages (actual) while traveling between Gallup, NM and Hinton, OK late this summer. The Acura MDX received 29.87 mpg in that 638.8 mile stretch. There must be some real good air or something up in your neck of the woods ;) ___Good Luck ___Wayne R. Gerdes ___Waynegerdes@earthlink.net

Edmonton is quite nice, although I have to admit that the weather can be a bit much. While we're having a great (hot) summer this year, the running joke is that we only get two seasons, summer and winter. Winters tend to bring plenty of snow, and typically two cold snaps per winter where temps hit -30 C for up to a week or two. That aside, there is plenty of amazing scenery to be found. Once I get some wheels worth taking off the highway I'll be on the lookout for trails. I will definitely let you know if I come across any worthwhile ones. As far as I know it, there are plenty to be found near Hinton (about 85km east of Jasper). No worries on having a "senior moment", but as far as I know it, Rubi's come with 31" tires...
