Yeah, and crap jobs like Circuit City are in abundance I was reading a blurb the other day talking about how all the "fallback" retail jobs are going away in this economic climate. All the laid off Circuit City workers aren't going to be able to go to the mall and get hired on at Linens 'n Things or Mervyns. And soon they'll be competing with a bunch of laid off UAW workers? BTW, why didn't we bail out Circuit City?? 'Cause everything in there is made in China?

It is hard for me to picture myself without a car. I have done the rental thing when I lived in Kona. I even did a lot of bike riding when car rental prices got too high. That still does not resolve the issue of high prices for little condos in downtown areas. City living is expensive in most metro areas. My wife has a cousin in Anchorage that lives in a $700k condo in town. He loves it. He walks to his law office even in the winter. Only a couple blocks. His is not a luxury unit overlooking the water. It takes a high income job to live decently in a city. Maybe Boise overlooking the river would be nice. I will probably stay where I am unless CA taxes me out of the place.

It depends a bit on how the cities grow (and how they are planned). Living in Vancouver BC would be a hoot, especially since they've spent the last two decades getting families back downtown. Downtown LA rolls its sidewalks up at 6 pm.

some people who are just suited to a city life One of my wife's relatives has always lived the city life and never has owned a car. Doesn't even drive period. Lived in San Diego (and got all over the huge county), Oakland, Seattle, etc. Hard to imagine how much wasn't spent over a few decades just on gas, not to mention insurance, repairs, parking and interest. My sister had one of those DC townhouses in Alexandria for a while before she moved way out in the sticks on her acre. She liked it a lot, but likes her rural place too. She does a lot of driving - has to go 1/2 mile just to take out her trash. She's thinking of going back to a condo now, though I can't really see her without a car. She's retired so the high gas prices really cramped her driving. I miss living downtown but my wife likes being out on the edge where we are now better. We'd both love to live in Manhattan for a year, but we aren't ready to liquidate our retirement saving to do so.

How can it still be $2.78? There's only one gas pipeline from Salt Lake City and the rest gets trucked in. That, or gouging. :)
