Re: BUYING A SOFT TOPS [skyking49]
by goducks1 on Thu Mar 30 13:22:50 PST 2006
You order them from the company that makes them, Rock Gear in New Mexico. I think the owner's name is Bob. Contact info is Rock Gear Inc. 1515 West Apache. Farmington, NM 87401 1-888-765-4327 Price was about $350 which is pretty reasonable considering it works as both a soft top and a bikini/safari. Very easy to take on and off. It's the same fabric as a non-sailcloth soft top from Bestop or Jeep, they use the Haartz fabric and you can get it in factory colors or lots of other colors too. To turn it into a bikini, you loosen up the rear straps, roll up the windows, and zip them into the top. Pull it back from the windshield and it collapses very tightly behind the rear seat. Not sure what you mean by secure. It's a soft top. Anyone who wants in can get in. Does it keep the elements out? Yeah. You can get it with or without the door surrounds. I got it without because I take the doors off alot. So instead there are these elastic door surrounds that keep the water out, but if it's really coming down you need to pop them on the outside of the doors which takes 4 or 5 seconds. The fastback look is pretty hot though, and you'll never be without your windows. I picked up a pair of soft doors too so I can go anywhere now in the summer and not get stuck somewhere without doors/top.

That's not true about the ML. There are cars with it, they are just mostly in the mid west. Tell your dealer to call around, or go to another dealer. I think your one is telling you that just so you buy the cars they have. They can order ones with ML and probably get them from other dealers around the US. It seems that for now, the ML is a regional thing, I don't know why, but again, you can find cars with it. Just look and call around if you want it bad enough :) .

Wow, that must have been some time ago that you lived in Michigan. Motown only seems to be used when talking about the past these days. I was born in Detroit and a month later moved to LA. About 7 years later we moved back to Michigan and spend 9 years in Southfield. After that we moved out to West Bloomfield, when I finished up high school, went off to college and came back, I was stupid and got married at 22 yrs old. I moved into an apartment in Farmington Hills for two years until I bought my current house in Dearborn Heights. I love my house and my neighborhood. I live with all senior citizens, mostly WWII vets who have raised their familys in those homes since the war. It is nice and quiet and nothing much happens. The only knock I have is that I grew up in Oakland County so all of my friends are north of me and I have to drive at least 20 min to get to any of them. Any way, it is great to see a fellow Michigander. And, it is any advantage on getting your ride after you are done with it, GO Michigan!!! Mark

as someone was responding. Yes, 20/20 hindsight is difficult -- efficiency-wise. But I think that we can see relative efficiency on a near-term and medium-term basis. And I don't think that using a lack of certainty on long-term efficiency is an excuse to do nothing. We have the means to make a positive effect -- and the consequences of not taking positive action may be more unpleasant than the positive action now. Example, the European model: $2.00 tax on every gallon of fuel -- instant drop in consumption, instant revenue bump for other projects. Suddenly, that bicycle looks better. The whole structure of our society is built around long trips in an automobile -- why? GMC, mostly. And the Interstate System. We could just as easily -- more easily -- have had a different model; and the current model could change to one of walkable distances -- a village/ small town model. Large cites are going to a satellite town model -- Atlanta comes to mind -- and with good public transport, the trip into the city or to the next city becomes more efficient on a per-user basis. I live in Las Cruce NM. NM is largely empty except for a corridor along the Rio Grande (sorry Carlsbad, Farmington, Roswell, Gallup, Grants etc.) where the three largest cities are located. The administrative centers for NM are on that corridor and consist of those three largest cities - Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Santa Fe. We could have a really fast train running from El Paso (technically not a part of NM, but look at the history and you'd see what I mean)to Taos (I like to ski) and it would be great. Georgia is mostly Atlanta, population wise. Florida is an H, West Coast, East Coast, Orlando. Those are the ones I know about. Fast trains, shuttles, and bikes -- paradise! I'd be in Taos every two weeks to ski (gotta recouperate). I love my car. I love to drive aimlessly looking at the scenery. But if I could ride a train cheaply, especially in the winter, I'd love it. And if it saves fossil fuels -- great!
Extra trans cooler??? Off roading in the Rockies???? LR Farmington Hills, MI?????
by kemmons on Wed Feb 27 05:28:09 PST 2002
Wasko- How's the truck(s)? On a previous message, you mentioned a guy at LR Farm Hills by the name of David Nostwald. Is he in service, sales, a tech? I'm asking because I too am looking to be more involved with a LR club here in MI, but that name isn't ringing a bell. The dealership has had a lot of trouble with management of staff with the BMW side of the business and have pulled LR people to help out. Most of the techs have remained true to Rover, but the service dept has been a different story which has made it difficult to establish a raport with anyone. Was there a specific tech you dealt with and trusted? Do you recall the name of the club in Saline? I just had the 75k maintenance done on my truck and she's doing great. I had some extra things replaced and checked because we're planning a trip west this summer and I want her good to go. I'll be pulling a 4800 lb travel trailer and have been concerned about burning up the trans once I get into the rockies going up and down those hills. The tongue weight is only 495 lbs. and the LR tech assured me that Lizzie could pull her 5500 pound weight limit and then some, but I'm still not sure. The installation of an additional trans cooler has even been suggested and is fairly common to people pulling RV's, but I wanted to see if you or anyone else had any recommendations. I am familiar with the stories of offroading in Ouray CO, but was wondering if there were any other hotspots people could suggest or stories that you Wasko, or others could share. We'll be in Montana and Wyoming as well as Colorado. Am I going to be in trouble if I don't have a winch? To the person inquiring about LR clubs in Michigan on one of the previous pages, I was curious to see if you've had any dealings with LR dealers in MI for service. I can give you my own history and that is that Wasko is right on by suggesting the Farmington Hills dealer. They are supportive, friendly and knowledgeable. A gentleman by the name of Mike Hood in service is great and the team of techs that work with him are helpful, full of suggestions, and have always steered me right. My favorite tech is named Matt. He's been there longer than a lot of the others. He's saved me LOTS of money. Glad to see everyone's doing great. Indeed, happy rovering!!!! Kim I've been told to expect the next version of the Disco to be a lot like the new Range Rover in looks and design with similar features. My source also said to expect the price tag to reflect these changes.
