03 Cobra Highway Mileage
by svtfangs on Mon Oct 27 10:28:21 PDT 2008
My Sunday car is an 03 Cobra- pullley, intake, MAC exhaust, SCT tuned. I am pushing around 500-515 crank. I drove it from Charlotte NC to Myrtle Beach SC and got an average of 22mpg on the highway. As long as I stay out of boost it gets pretty good mileage on the highway. In the city...well, thats a different matter! ;)
Fuel Efficiency

FWIW, Frank did better than I did with his Forester (pre-turbo), and someone in the Forester thread has a record tank of 33 mpg. Lately I do a lot of highway miles, because of the beach condo. Plus the Miata tends to do the shorter/city trips. So that boosts the numbers for the Forester. From my observations the 5MT can beat EPA numbers but the automatics usually don't. You're preaching to the choir as far as holding a reliable car long-term, my Miata is 11 years old and my Forester a comparatively young 6. The 2005 Forester X is tempting with a 23/30 EPA rating, but I agree with you there - no gas savings will offset the new car payment. Still, if Bruce managed 24 mpg already, EPA is 22/30, it's fair to expect he'll manage to match those EPA numbers. His WRX was 21/27 and on premium, so we're talking maybe $300 per year in fuel savings. Not enough to pay for the new car, of course. But I think his primary reason was the need for the auto tranny, not the mileage. -juice
Re: forester in the mud [thunderboot]

One of the things that caught my attention when I was shopping for a vehicle back in 98-99 was a review by consumer reports on the Forester. They tested a variety of "SUV's" and were amazed at, and subsequently selected as the top pick, the Forester. One comment that I remember was "it did amazingly well in deep mud and soft sand". That was a 98' review and the AWD system has been improved since then. Most notably adding a limited slip rear. I can tell you I drove mine through some ridiculous stuff and never got stuck. Just don't high center it .. and you're fine. Drove mine on the beach near Ocean City MD in very soft sand with a little air let out of the tires .. and some absolutely absurdly deep snow .. did fine. - hutch
5000 mile MPG update--2009 base fit auto
by lknfit on Wed Oct 22 17:43:27 PDT 2008
Man I love this car. Using manual calculations (computer seems to always be 2-3mpg high) I have had an overall average of 38.5 mpg with a 50/50 mix of city and highway. Best tank 41, worst 34. worst tank was fully loaded beach trip with family, dog, and a weeks worth of junk. Just clicked to 60% oil life. cant wait to do the first change.

Nearly 19 City and over 27 hwy (if I set the cruise on the speed limit) otherwise it does about 24 hwy at 85+mph cross country, I have a heavy foot. The car is a 99 Silo Premiere.
