The Notorious and Fame-Seeking Dr. Chapman is ticking people off
by larsb on Fri Apr 25 08:27:32 PDT 2008
Dr. Chapman's "cooling" opinion is making his peers made at him David Karoly from Melbourne University's School of Earth Sciences is outraged. "This is not science. This is misinterpretation or misrepresentation and mis-communication of the factors that influence global temperature," he said. "It appears to be an opinion of Phil Chapman and he's welcome to his opinion, but in terms of climate variations and an approaching ice age, he is sadly misinformed. "Yes, the climate system did cool from January 2007 to January 2008 quite dramatically. That cooling was associated with changes in the ocean temperatures in the Pacific, a well known phenomenon, the El Nino to La Nina switch. It isn't unprecedented." But he says it is not due to sunspot activity. "Sunspot variations do not lead to the sorts of temperature variations seen from January 2007 to 2008," he said. "They don't lead to those large temperature variations, even on an 11-year sunspot cycle. "And so in terms of increasing greenhouse gases, we can also see that effect because the most recent La Nina, the current La Nina, is warmer than earlier La Nina episodes of the same strength. "We're actually seeing a warming even in these cool periods associated with La Nina." Dr Graeme Pearman is a climate scientist and past chief of atmospheric research at the CSIRO. He says the doubt over global warming and its causes is not reasonable and he warns Dr Chapman's wait-and-see approach is dangerous. "And what science has seen over the last six months or so are changes that are occurring that are further advanced than we would like," he said. "And so I think there is a high probability, a much higher probability than his scenario coming true, that we're going to look back and rue the fact that we didn't act earlier. "We must get on with trying to slow down the growth of our emissions as a global community and as an Australian community as soon as possible."
Denial of Campaign 163
by lemenn on Thu Dec 14 08:57:27 PST 2006
I contacted Volvo Sweden directly to try to have more information. Below are most of the information I received (I removed personal information). Your Global Customer Relations File Number is XXXXXX. Dear Mr. Le Menn, Thank you for your email dated 7th December, 2006, inquiring about campaign 163 regarding Volvo C70. Concerning your query, we have investigated in our company system and we can therefore inform you that there seem to be no recalls attached to your car. Furthermore, we would like to inform you that we are not aware of campaign 163, as mentioned in your e-mail. If you would like to further inquire about this matter, Volvo Car Corporation is represented in France by Volvo Automobiles France SA, who are, according to policy, responsible for all matters related to our products in your market. For this reason, we have forwarded your comments to our market representatives. Their contact details are as follows: Mr. XXXX Service Relations Clientele Volvo Automobiles France SA34 rue de la Croix de Fer 78128 ST Germain en Laye Tel: xxxx Fax: xxxx Email: xxxx Website: xxxx We would like to thank you for taking the time to bring this matter to our attention and we would like to reassure you that either our representatives or ourselves will be in touch with you in the near future. Yours sincerely, yyyyy Global Customer Relations Advisor Dept 57460, SAA2 Volvo Car Corporation SE-40531 Göteborg,Sweden Telephone: yyyy Fax: yyyy Website: yyyy Then I sent them the 50 pages documents describing the Campaign 163 Below the answer: Dear Mr. Le Menn, Thank you for your e-mail of yesterday and the attached 50 pages. I am sure that you understand that the information that you sent comes from an internal document and should really not have been made available to customers. However, the fact remains that all campaigns and technical bulletins are market specific. Each market will decide from case to case and based on local regulations and requirements whether that particular campaign will apply in their country. Once again, this campaign was unknown to us and could quite well be unknown to Volvo France and all other countries in Europe and other parts of the world. As you have also seen in the text, not all vehicles are affected and those affected will be informed by their market representatives if and when the campaign becomes relevant on that market. We therefore recommend that you stay in close contact with Mr. xxxx and his colleagues and you will be informed if the campaign becomes relevant in France. We thank you once again for your understanding and for bringing this matter to our attention. Your sincerely, yyyy Global Customer Relations Advisor Dept 57460, SAA2 Volvo Car Corporation SE-40531 Göteborg,Sweden Telephone: yyyy Fax: yyyy Website: yyyy Then I called MR xxxx in France. He told me that There is no recall on C70 in France. I said I know, it cannot be called a recall because it is not safety or pollution related, but what about all the problems customers are reporting and are now solved in the USA? He told me my car is not concerned by this recall. But I said I noticed once the A/C Noise coming randomly. He said, Oh yes this noise! This will be simple to solve in dealership and we will send mail within 2 weeks to have cars checked. Be patient you should receive a mail about it. What should I think about Volvo Sweden and Volvo France?
My Sorento's Accident :( :( :(
by slan_canada on Fri Feb 13 19:42:32 PST 2004
Hi Everyone, This evening, I had for the first time of my life an accident. I will write below what happened... in French. It's a little difficult for me to write the whole story in english. I know that maybe some of you speak french (i.e. jdesjardins) so maybe someone can translate ? Here we go... Ça a faissé. Again, I'm sorry for the french but my english is not 100%. I'm sure that someone will be able to translate.
Car & Driver, March 2001
by reneleblanc on Thu Mar 08 19:42:46 PST 2001
On page 102 Car & Driver reports on their Long-Term Test of the Lincoln LS-V8 Sport. The report is mostly positive, but say ambiguous things like "The Lincoln's sport-suspension tuning was judged inferior to that offered by BMW. It relishes a good flog down a twisty stretch, but it sacrifices too much ride comfort on the altars of grip and body-motion control. On the other hand, the road holding grip (0.81 to 0.82 g) remained within 0.01 of our BMW 328i long-termer and braking performance ended up in BMW territory at 175 feet from 70 mph." I don't understand what "ride comfort" disadvantage to the little 328i they could be writing about. I think the LS sport ride comfort is incredible with almost no sacrifice in comfort to achieve its acknowledged great handling. Regarding "dealer dings", I'll bet that Sanderson Lincoln-Mercury (Phoenix) will rue the day they screwed up the 35,000 mile service on Car & Driver's Lincoln LS! They now have national recognition! Ouch! It should be painfully clear to LM that BMW has established the benchmark, and the LS is going to have to overcome a lot of pre-established opinion with overwhelming superiority just to get a fair call. I have concern that whereas LM mounted a fantastic assault on this market with the LS in its introductory year, I'm not seeing information that convinces me they are keeping the pressure on that will earn them parity in the psychological side of this market. I think that for the psychological impact alone, they should offer a manual transmission option for BOTH the V6 and the V8. I know the bean counters say the manual has too small a market, but the trouble with bean counters is that they seem to have zero understanding of the emotional side of marketing. (Do bean counters have souls?) I think the very fact that LM would offer a manual V8 would increase sales of ALL Lincoln LS's, including SSTs and automatics. Having an option for manual transmissions in both models is a strong cue that THE LS IS A SERIOUS SPORT SEDAN. I think the other cue is that with at least one model, (such as a manual V8 Sport) the LS can *easily* break the 7-second 0-60 benchmark. The other night, the Phoenix Suns came out and devastated the LA Kings in the first half with a 28-point lead. Then, in the 2nd half they fell apart and ended up LOSING the game 89-100! I'd like to encourage LM to realize they are entering the 2nd half of the Luxury Sport Sedan game. A lot of the car magazines and Consumer Reports are now sounding distinctly lack-luster about the Lincoln LS. What a contrast with the first half of this game. Come on, LM, KEEP ON MAKING YOUR SHOTS!
