Re: STI - final thoughts [driver100]

And then there's the ones that say "call me when you're about to sell it" boom....I had a couple of those. They worded it differently, stating, "let me know when you really want to sell the car". Well, I didn't get it all tarted up, put an ad in the paper, nor put a "for sale" sign in if I didn't want to really sell it. To add to that, they got peeved when I didn't call them to tell them I was about to close the deal with someone else. driver.....in all of the "big 3", Chrysler is the one that's teetered on the brink most often. Daimler stuck their hands in Chrysler's pockets. And, when it came time to update ChryCo's offerings, they ran away like they stole something (which they did). Still, Chrysler made its fair share of blunders (as did Ford and GM). They relied to heavily on Commander, JGC, Patriot, Caliber, Sebring, Avenger, all vehicles that weren't even close to class leading. You can even see Challenger about to quickly lose its luster with the '10 Camaro and Mustang right around the corner. Ford's shopping spree with Jag, Rover, etc produced little to nothing to the bottom line. Maybe the new F-150 will save them. But, I wouldn't bet the house on that. At least Ford doesn't have 6 different domestic nameplates weighing them down as GM does (Chevy,Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac,GMC, Hummer). To me, Chevy is relevant. So is Cadillac. The rest? They'll never be missed. You can throw Saab on that scrap heap, too (an acquisition I never did understand).

No...if it doesn't have everything that the other car has, then it can't be 95% of the car. I think I found the problem. One person is defining the car by, well, the car; something like chassis solidity, willingness to have fun AND be settled on the highway, etc. The other is defining it on paper (car H has X feature while car P doesn't). I've driven a basic Audi Cabriolet, and a Sebring Convertible. They were actually similarly equipped, but the Audi was much more "car." More solid, better handling AND ride (to me). It was much more "car" than the Sebring was, despite features that were similar.

Hideous is too kind. If that thing had a Chrysler badge, you people would be all over it. I've been a Chrysler lover for ages now, and the majority of my cars have been Mopar. Heck, I even own a car that pre-dates the Mopar pentastar...a 1957 DeSoto. But even I will admit that the current Toyota Camry is better than its Mopar peers, the Sebring/Avenger. Now, I would probably never buy a Camry, mainly because I like the Altima and the Accord better. But Toyota must be doing something right, considering how many of the danged things they sell. If anything, being a Chrysler lover from way back when (I first got converted in the late 70's, I guess, when my Granddad bought an old '53 DeSoto Firedome to use as a spare car) their current crop of cars actually pisses me off! If I could, I would choose ANY car over a Toyota Camry. But I'm not a good enough liar to say that I'd choose a Sebring or Avenger over it. At least, I couldn't say it with a straight face. A 300 or Charger? Possibly, but I don't consider them a direct competitor to the Camry.

This is SAD

Just read a little story on AOL that in England if you buy one Dodge Avenger you receive another for FREE. I think I would be too ashamed of doing that to such an obviously distressed dealer to take advantage of the deal. It can't be that bad here in America, can it? I actually considered the Avenger at one time. You could get it with a 235hp engine and I kinda liked it's looks (better than it's twin Sebring). Then I read the reviews which trashed it for it's handling and interior. It's sad to see Chrysler trying to get by with non-competitive products. The playing field has changed. People are demanding much more for 25K these days.
