Re: Test Drive From Hell [chikoo]

It is all about perception. We all know how cheap, tiny and unreliable the japanese cars are......till they proved otherwise in a decade or so later That's a very good point. People said if you scratched the paint off the first Toyotas you would see Campbell's soup tins underneath. Most companies are rough in the beginning, but once they find the formula (usually what they can do better) they take off. It is too bad they get a poor reputation in the beginning, because it takes a long time to make that back....and Hyundai could probably be getting 10 to 20% more per car if it wasn't for trying to make that up.
Re: Oil Change [max43]
by rioowner on Thu Sep 11 20:11:21 PDT 2008
Hey Max. got some sleep. I am a little bit sleepy still, so I won't be too long. I have a 5 speed, and it is a Rio5. I have about 400 miles left before I hit 3k for my next oil change. Which I won't do at 3k. I am heading out for a week in Oct. first week, and will put around1300 miles on it. Then I will change it when I get back. I don't see the use in changing at 3k when the manu./manual tells you 7500. That cannot be held against you if there is a warranty problem. You go by the book, you are ok. If you keep receipts, of course. I will change oil more often in the summertime. It gets hotter, the oil gets hotter, burns faster, thus, breaks down quicker. Long trips, over 50 miles also get the engine hot as is the oil. Wintertime, one word or two? I let the oil go longer because it lasts longer when it is cooler. But, the oil filter is another solution to keeping a clean engine. You don't have to have a six dollar oil filter. A two dollar oil filter will do just fine, like Campbells soup to Kroger soup. Not much difference, if any. The thing is, if you change the oil filter often, you keep cleaner oil. It is cheaper to change the oil filter only rather paying to have the oil and filter changed. If you don't change your oil, then it may be more difficult to change just the filter. On the Rio though, it is so simple, it being in front, and protruding outward, so only oil you lose is what is in the filter. Replace a cup full and go on. Changing the oil filter every two thousand miles keeps the oil cleaner, saves you on complete oil changes, and you get to see what your engine is doing. Most people don't even look at their engines any longer. I buy three oil filters at a time and when they are gone, it is time to change the oil, unless of course, it is summertime. Ok, change oil in November, run 6k miles on the car. Change the filter at 2k. It will take me four months to put 6k miles on the car. March rolls around, change the oil, remembering to change the filter every 2k, and then run 4500 miles before changing oil. Then, it is 3k when I change it. That will take me to around August, and it is hot, and then back to Nov. Not hard to keep up with. Just have it jotted down in front of you when you are on your puter. Oil changes at the dealer run around 24.95 or more. Val instant runs around the same, probably more, and firestone is about the cheapest at 16.95, but you have to wait, and they don't do much else. Oh, I said I was going to be short. I filled up today and recorded 42 mpg. I put 2.1 gallons in it. I still stop every 75 to 105 miles and fill up. It is better for me, and my wife doesn't run out of fuel, like most will do if left up to them. Don't hate me for that. It is a natural fact. I didn't come up with it. Anyway, let me know how the mileage is going. later
Remember before I left for my trip...

I fixed the AC drip myself and then payed 89.95 for the AAR (AAA certified) inspection right before walking into the AAA office to buy my membership. Well, now I'm 700+ miles away from home and here's what happened tuesday night at approximately 10:50pm (about 15 miles from my destination): The beautiful Land Rover Discovery barreled down the 101 North at a safe 68 miles per hour. The next exit was the 85 North, and finally my 8 month pregnant wife had fallen asleep for the past 5 minutes. I clicked the cruise control off and made my exit onto a one lane interchange in the city of Campbell. As I ramped up to the 85 North, low and behold standing dead center lane, spanning the width of the lane (approximately as long as the LR is wide), a wild BOAR lights bewildered with my lights in its eyes. Most likely wondering why his legs suddenly decided to stop moving. I, having two cars on my tail, did only what could be considered honorable and whilst yelling "Oh, My ****ing Lord!", drove straight through the bewildered boar. WOW! Was that the best decision of my life?... Yes. Not only is this accident covered under COMP but it will not effect my premium, Sweet! So, let it be known that when traveling at a rate of 65-70 miles per hour and confronted with mere flesh and bone, the LR Discovery suffers only aesthetic damages and potentially may require a power wash to rid the under carriage of blood and guts. More to follow, such as pictures, the boar is effectively dead and was checked on by local police. All that the passengers suffered was long conversations with insurance and longer convos with AAA membership supervisors. The LR is at the shop being quoted as I write this. Damages most likely include sub-frame, bumpers, maybe chassis alignment, and radiator/fan. Unfortunately though, as we drove over the boar, I believe I heard the Disco's ego inflate slightly and it is possible the truck has recognized its own awesome power. The wife and I, have to sit down with Disco when it gets back and explain to it that boar's have feelings too and that we should be more careful when playing with them next time. ;) Have a great weekend.

Just got back from a two week 6323km (3950mi) trip, Campbell River- Whitehorse-Skagway return in our 07 LT that had 7000km on it when we left. We were four- two adults and two teenagers. What a perfect car. Had a big roof carrier on with all our camping gear and I know the Passat I was thinking about buying would not have done as well at twice the price. The only thing was the brake shudder that happened on hard braking- even that was not consistent- will be getting that fixed soon. Congrats to GM for a real sleeper. By the way, I put a strip of expanded metal in front of the rad to catch stones, affixing it with zap straps- worked great.

Hi - Sounds like a great deal. I've been hunting for exactly the same vehicle, the lowest I've been offered is $16,600 plus tax & fees at Campbell Nelson in Edmonds. Would you mind telling me which sales person you went through? I'd like to pull the trigger on a new versa before the weekend. Thanks
Still looking good

Just drove from Cleveland to Fort Campbell (KY / TN border). 552 Miles averaged 36 MPG. Averaged 65 MPH in Ohio, 70 to 75 in KY.
