Re: Cost for replacing front brakes and rotors [grengaswamy]
by ddcyr40 on Mon Jul 10 19:09:35 PDT 2006
Hey, I think I have the same exact car as you. I'm a freshmen in college and I've got mine a little pimped out and such with 18's, borla cat-back exhaust, tint, etc., but what were discussing i went through also. When I bought my car used, it had aftermarket vented and slotted rotors on the front and back and aftermarket pads. little did i know that there is a warning light for the pads when they get warn. so my light came on and i brought it to a dealer, thinking i needed new pads. i told them to "figure out what was wrong with the light." i come back, 5 hours later, to a bill of $525. To a freshmen in college, my mouth dropped to the floor. They said that the pads and rotors were nearly new and weren't bad, but since they were aftermarket, the wires weren't connected right so the warning light was messed up. So those had to be replaced. Then, they said my aftermarket rotors weren't compatible with the oem pads, so they had to replace the rotors also. all with a measly 12-month/12,000 mile warranty. keep in mind this is at a dealer in waterville, maine at $75/hour. where you are, it's probably more. i told them i never signed a work order saying do all of that work and argued with them. they ended up giving me a $100 credit, but it was still fairly pricy, especially that i have a front set of perfectly fine rotors and pads sitting at home. As for you, I would definately make sure the parts are oem, otherwise i would put money that you would have problems, whether it is a slight vibration you can hear, the warning light, or something else. but dealers are over priced, and make tons of mark-up on parts. and since its not under warranty anymore, i wouldn't go to a dealer. but i wouldn't go to some general garage that works on everything from a 68 nova to a ford winstar to supposedly volkswagens-ya maybe then can change the oil on one :) find a place that works on imports and order the parts through them, make sure they are oem, and make sure they can give you a warranty on them, even if it is like a 6-month. good luck with that, and i guess that isn't even that bad-my friend has a bmw z4 and he said the brakes get changed once a year at nearly $1000. ouch. i don't check this site often, but figured i would let you know since i went though the same thing you need to.

A new (old) guy wades in... 2005 V6 Highlander - drove off the lot June 3, 2005. Cruise control behaves erratically, often feeling like it "floors" it just because we've falling a couple of mph behind desired speed. Requesting "pass this turkey" yields different results, sometimes awkward downshifts and rapid acceleration, sometime preceded and/or followed by hesitation. Approaching village intersection, downhill, foot on brake, take foot off brake, begin left turn onto desired street, apply a bit of gas...nothing, apply a bit more gas...nothing, add just a bit more, THEN acceleration too fast, causing driver's and passenger's head to tip back. This is a narrow Main Street in a Maine village. There are lots of possible targets, cars and kids and bikes and others. And then there is the unanticipated downshifting for braking effect that tips heads forward... but that's another story for another day, and not quite as annoying or of nearly the same concern. The dealer's service manager (Waterville, Maine) first asserted there were no adjustments accessible for his mechanics. Nothing he could do. Get used to it. After applying a bit more gas from me and a hesitation or two from him, he searched for TSBs that might apply. Found none. Then found one dated June 3, 2005...that related to recalibration of the transmission. Absolutely no mention of these expressions of concern or earlier TSBs. I expected better from Toyota, much better. I still expect better, and mean to try to get it. I agree that these reports are the results of my perceptions. I perceive stuff that is happening. So, has anyone written Toyota? What's the next step?

Car_man Thanks for the information and advice. The demo model has all the options I was looking for so I may have to re-think doing another lease. It may work out better if I can get the cost down to purchase the vehicle and take a schedule 179 deduction as this vehicle is being used for business. If I do stay with another lease do you think the 2005 incentives will increase to the 2004 level by the end of the year. I still have two months left on a 39 month Pathfinder lease so I do have some time before needing to make a decision.

Car_man Both the 2004 and 2005 Durango's are the Limited4WD models.Talked to the salesman today who informed me that they are unable to offer a lease on the 2004 demo model with the 15,000 miles. That did not make any sense to me. Also their price on the 2004 is $29,543. Considering the Kelly Blue Book retail value is $30,770 am I unreasonable in feeling that the $4,500 in factory incentives should be taken off the retail value bringing the price down to $26,200. I am looking at a three year lease and need to decide between 12,000 and 15,000 miles a year.
Dodge Durango lease

Hi! Looking at a 2004 Dodge Durango Limited with 15,000 miles that was used by the dealer and still has it's incentives and a 2005 model. Would like to have the residual values and money factors for these two vehicles before sitting down to negotiate a lease. Thanks
