I think it is very important to have the extended warranty if you are planning on keeping the vehicle. I have read many posting where the buyer has save a lot of expenses in the later years. On my 2000 E320 I never used the warranty but it was available. On my 1996 C280 I used GEICO about $120.00 per year $300 deductible came in handy a few times. I was able to transfer the warranty to the next owner who had GEICO insurance. My 2003 E500 still under warranty has some expensive repairs. The prices on new car warranties from MB are up over 100% since my last purchase. After thirty days there is a 15% surcharge on the new car warranties. Make sure you are receiving an MB Warranty after for a copy. Make sure your quote is in writing. I asked a dealer back East for a quote on a 7 year 100,000 miles warranty. The price was a couple hundred less than my best quote. You can see what the contract looks like below. Make sure all entries are entered. There was no expiration on my warranty and it showed five years rather than seven years. The original warranty of four years plus the years purchased. I got a quote from a MB dealer for a 7 years 100,000 mile warranty for about $3,800.00. I received the warranty about two weeks later and it was for one year. I did get a full refund after contacting MBUSA. AGREEMENT TYPE/TERM** THE WARRANTY SHOULD HAVE READ 7 YR 100,000 MILES AGREEMENT END DATE*** WAS LEFT BLANK The warranty read 5 YR 100,000 Mile Purchase Price $4,341.25 This is a one year extension to the original warranty. I questioned the terms after I received the warranty in the mail about two weeks later. I was informed that I asked for a one extension of the original warranty was left blank on the warranty.

For the first time in over 19 years, I am officially Dart-less!! :P Okay, so the thing is still sitting in my driveway, but the guy who's been wanting to buy it finally came by and finished paying for it, so I gave him the keys and the title to it. So as far as I'm concerned, it's gone! :shades: I was starting to worry. He had paid for half of it, but I'd always told him that if he changed his mind, I'd understand, and give him his money back. I got $400 for it. I guess I could have held out for more if I really wanted to, but I figure hey...the thing has 338,000 miles on it. It has two virgin body panels...the passenger side door and the trunk. The rear quarters are rusted, both front fenders are damaged. The driver's door has a dent. And the hood has some rust in the bracing. And the roof is sunroof-inflicted. Anyway, the guy who's buying it actually wants to fix it up, which I think is cool. There was someone else who stopped by who was interested in it, but mainly for parts. I did take down his name and contact info, and passed it on to this guy, just in case he gets fed up with the car and decides he's in over his head. It feels kinda nice, being down to seven cars now. :)
MY BMW
by dewey on Wed Nov 12 19:46:57 PST 2008
Here is the irony: My 98 BMW 323i was so problem-free I could not believe it when I read CR and noticed many of those black dots for unreliability. My 07 BMW 335i is so problematical that I am shocked when I see positive reliability results in CR and JD Powers and rosy European surveys (3 series voted second to none in terms of reliability) I dont think BMWs in general are unreliable and they are certainly more reliable than Audis I mean here in Toronto I see so many old BMWs but hardly any old Audis. That Edmunds forum member named MarkCincinatti owned I think up to 20 Audis and he claims that he would never trust an Audi beyond warranty since they would be too expensive to repair and maintain. Despite my positive view of BMW reliability, my particular car is a completeLEMON. Within two months this is what happened: Twice I had to go to the dealer for the electrical rear window motor . My ventilation fan had to be replaced My moon roof motor had to be replaced The plates where my door locks are got rusty and I had them replaced Seven different moulding pieces within the interior of my car fell apart My trunk malfunctioned and could not close :lemon: I look at my 83 MB 300D and I dont think there were so many problems during over a quarter of a century while driving hundreds of thousands of miles. Usually I get attached to my cars and I keep them for about a decade and sometimes even many decades. Well that wont be the case with my BMW335i---I will get rid of it as soon as the warranty expires. Well at least my wife's BMW 530xi Touring is more reliable than my car.
I've driven them all (almost)...

So, I've just finished driving seven of the nine cars linked to this topic (I skipped the Yaris and the Fit) and then threw in an eight (a VW Rabbit) for good measure. All eight cars were equipped with a manual transmission, and in general, I have to say that I'm impressed with the amount of car one can buy for ~$17,000 these days. The two stand-outs of the group were the Rabbit (not a "Sedan" per-se as I drove a 2-door version, however, it's virtually identical to its 4-door sibling) and the Mazda3 i Touring. At this point I'm probably going to buy a car within the next week, and given the fact that virtually every 5-Speed Rabbit inbound to every VW dealership within a 75 mile radius is already sold for the next couple of months, that means that I'll probably end up with a new Mazda3 in my garage. Stay tuned. ;) Best regards, Shipo
sales story from the past

Since Richard is talking about Mercury's, I once owned a 1987 Grand Marquis LS, pretty much loaded. In 1990 I put it up for sale but since I only drove it 5 miles round trip to work, it had about 12K on the mileage. So I under price it (before computers, Edmunds etc.) put it in the classified. The very next morning the phone is ringing off the hook, the wife is furious with people questioning her on the car, and about 4 people wanting to come right over. She calls me at work, says get home, I will not handle whatever you've done now. I get home, there are 3 people in my driveway almost coming to blows, all middle aged people with means. The car is sitting there and all three are touching it refusing to release it. When I said I'll take the one who came first, that started a bidding war. I ended up selling for maybe seven hundred over advertised, but I never felt good about it. I still feel I did something deceptive, left a bad taste in my mouth.

I still have a problem with sub compacts not getting better fuel mileage than they do. In 2002 I bought a Saturn SL and traded in my old Dodge RamCharger. After a few weeks I needed a second car to commute with so I could leave the SL home for my wife. I picked up a 95 or 96 SC-1 to drive daily. Now I will admit the car got more freeway miles than city driving but I could pull in 40 MPG fairly regularly. 36 was my average. The SL got closer to 32 average and sometimes when it didn't see the freeway it got 28. Now close to seven years later the cars are even smaller and still they are in the 30s. One of my cycling club friends has a Smart and he gets 40, half the car and the same mileage as my old Saturn. I can also remember many in these forums assuring us the Smart would get better mileage but the proof is in the numbers. If I am going to give up comfort and utility then they are going to have to give me a better price and better fuel mileage.
