Re: 1997 lesabre struts [absav]

To what are you comparing the struts? The Buicks had a very soft, but controlled ride. They are at home on a relatively smooth street and interstate. If it's a Custom, that's even more true because it doesn't have the leveling rear struts that pump up to maintain height. Those were actually stiffer than the base struts for the rear. In the 1993, with two people in the rear, stopping at a stop sign quickly and making the nose dive then hitting the gas actually threw enough mass to the rear that the struts bottom (softly). If you're comparing to an Accord's ride, that won't work as you see from what I've said. If you mother intends to keep the car I'd do as I did on both my leSabres and put on Monroe SensaTrac stuts all around. You can shop for price. I don't recommend Sears but another store would match their pricing. Sears runs half price on installation labor cost fairly often and you can take that plus the cost of the struts to shop at your favorite place. Don't forget there'll be a 4-wheel alignment added to that. Eleven years of age may also have softened the struts.

Believe it or not, several of my friends on the Yahoo E39 list are very happy with Monroes struts/shocks. They are made in Europe and apparently they work very well on a street driven Bimmer.

You must be a very light driver. I replaced my front pads at about 35K miles and the rear pads shortly after at around 37K miles. The fronts I replaced with OEM Hyundai pads and have, again replaced them at around 52K miles with some Akebono ceramic pads. The rears were replaced with Monroe ceramics and are still going strong. The tires...I have the OEM Michelin's and I'm waiting to wear those out so I can change them to the General Altimax tires that I've heard some good things about. However, subtracting the mileage I've put on my aftermarket tires (about 25K) I've put about 32K miles on the OEM tires and they are in pretty good shape.

I guess it depends on your driving habits. I do know that before my Azera, the rear brake pads would typically last twice as long as the front pads (seemed to be the case with all my past cars). However, with the ESC system on the Azera...it employs the rear brakes at times it feels correction is needed. I don't know how sensitive the system is, but it would seem to be a major player in the fact of the rear pads wearing so quickly. I replaced my front pads (with OEM Hyundai pads) at around 35K miles and th rear pads (Monroe ceramic) at about 37K miles. I recently replaced the fronts again with Akebono ceramic pads from www.rockauto.com. So the 2nd stint I only got about 20-25K miles, but the rear pads seem to be going strong as I'm just over 57K miles now.

Any advice on replacement tires for an '03 with 18" wheels? Bridgestone Dueler H/T, michelin pilot each get average reviews for the snow and I live in CT where we do get some winter weather.
