Re: Cerberus and GM together is a dreadful idea! [skw0123]

In the fifties and into the sixties most vehicle makers used one body, but has upgrades to it, Likethe Chevy Biscane, 210 or Bellair. and the Impala. Worked pretty well and I think it kept prices lower. The huge "added features" like heated seats, airconditioning as standard, every vehicle has carpet, CD player, and the list goes on. There needs to be a "basic vehicle" that not only competes but offers a better quality then these Korean small death traps. I remember when Toyota first came our and the Suberu, these were relly cheap in cost and had very sparce insides, but got great mpg. If Ralf Nader would have kept his stinken nose out of GM's Business, the Covair was a really good car, at a very affordable price. There is clear stupid thinking when cars use to get 30+ mpg and then when the EPA says these cars must not emit but some amount of smog and the car drops down to 23 mpg. Does this make any logic? The less gas used the less smog is what I think. It is dumb when we see a Chrvy Aver and it gets 25mpg! Can you explain why a small light weight Aveo with a 4 cyc. engine only gets 25 mpg? Our Chrysler pacifica AWD that weighs 4,600 lbs gets more than 25 mpg on the freeway. Something is really screwed up here. There is no reason for these not so Smart Cars to get 41 mpg and the best we can do in the US is 33 mpg? The auto industry has made some serious erroes in judgement in trying to keep raising the bar with adding so many "add on's" to make more profit, they have priced themselves out of the working mans budget. It well might be time to get back to some basics. farout

I appreciate everyone's input regardign the M45. m45horn: Yep, I am in Austin, TX. I guess not too hard to figure given my username. I am glad to hear that West Houston treated you well. In Austin there is, of course, only one Infiniti dealer. I am not at that point yet, but when/if I get down to the nitty gritty of determining cost, I would certainly consider going to Houston/Dallas/San Antonio if I could get a better deal. It wouldn't be too bad "having" to drive back home! I noted a few posts ago that you mentioned you got a ticket exiting off the freeway. That happened to me in Bellaire, exiting off 610. This was probably 13-14 years ago. The cop seemed like he was 10 and had a Clint Eastwood complex. As you know, no point fighting a Bellaire ticket. I feel your pain.

I was driving down Main St in Whitewater, WI and saw the following vehicles on an old car carrier: 1) Two rusting hulks - 50's era Pontiac Bonnevilles 2) A '56-58 Chevy Bellair in decent shape. 3) An old Jeep Willy convertable. 4) An old British car with no markeings - late 40's early 50s. 5) A 2000-2002 Corbin motors electric one-seater There were two other vehicles and a motorcycle ... looks like a storage rack ... too bad they are not inside. I have pictures but don't know how to post them ...">

that 1 inch more outside diameter on your tires will mean that you will be travelling something like 5% faster than your speedometer indicates (and 5% farther than your odometer indicates too). At 70 mph on your speedometer that means you'd actually be going 73.5 mph. So, here in Texas, I would need to keep it at 73.5 mph in the 70 mph highways in order to stay under the Texas-safe 7 mph over the limit speed. (In DFW, in town, during rush hours, 10 mph over is required, until two or more vehicles collide and cause a creeping parking lot to materialize. ;-)) rand01: "what is the point of having the leather if you are going to cover it?" So that the next owner can enjoy really nice, pristine leather seats, of course! The same reason that granny put those nasty clear vinyl seat covers on her cloth Bellaire seats and the living room sofa! ;-)

Considering the area where you live. A V1 will probably go off with frequency especially in ticket happy West U. Bellaire likes to catch the occasional speeder. Then there are the University of Texas cops in the Medical Center. Maybe, you should ride a bicycle to work, pending that you don't get run over on Holcombe.

Congratulations on the home purchase! West U. is nice, and near the new Krispy Kreme! We have friends that live in West U. just off Weslayan and Holcombe (well, Bellaire Blvd.), so not too far from you. Sheila and I have yet to get together, but we live very close together, she is across the lake down the street from us. Won't that short drive to work kill your BMW-buzz? I love that I live much further away so I can drive her longer, even if I don't go as fast as I would like. I have had two speeding tickets, one here in Houston while in college (about 7 years ago) and one while in grad school in Ohio (about 5 years ago). One was deserved, one wasn't. At least the insurance on the BMW went down when I moved across the Brazoria County line, I saved $120 a year.
