Best Minivan?
by cartzar1 on Wed Sep 05 00:22:55 PDT 2007
We owned a 1996 Town and Country for 11 years. We put 125,000 miles on it. My wife loved it and I enjoyed it. When it came time to replace it, we decided to follow the bandwagon (Edmunds, Consumers Report, Motor Trend, etc.) and switch to the Odyssey. It is NOT a bad car; it is a GOOD car, but it isn’t the “machine of perfection” that every automobile writer says it is. I’ve looked at, but not had a chance to drive, the 2008 Town & Country (AKA Caravan). Fit and finish is better than the 1996 (or even the 2007). Interior design is measurably good looking and of higher quality than the previous editions. The fit and finish of the Odyssey is very good but far from “perfect.” The Stow ‘n Go seating of the Chrysler minivans are truly easy to “remove” (fold); one has to know before going shopping at Costco that you are going to buy a 60” HDTV if you own an Odyssey because you have to remove “before you go.” With only about 9,500 miles, our Odyssey (purchased new) squeaks and rattles almost as much as the Town and Country did at 125,000 miles. (Mostly from the sliding doors, folding seats, and rear hatch.) The Odyssey seat belts are hard for my 5’2” wife to grab and put into place. The radio is, without doubt, the worst car radio I have ever owned. The Town & Country was better; my 2001 Cadillac is better. We have the same stations preset on both the Odyssey and the Cadillac and drive them in the same geographic area – and most of the stations are almost unlistenable in the Odyssey. They are clear as a bell on the Cadillac and were on the Town & Country but sound like distant stations behind a hill in the Odyssey (We live in a big valley and none of the stations are blocked by any hills or mountains.) The dash display of radio, clock, and air conditioning data is unreadable when sunglasses are being used by the driver. Our middle of the line 96 Chrysler had a compass, an outside thermometer that accurately told the temperature, displayed miles to empty, estimated mpg. Our middle of the line 2006 Odyssey has none of this. (Well, it does have a thermometer, but it is so radically inaccurate and inconsistent that it is useless.) I could go on, but I close with the fact that the Odyssey upper glove box door makes it impossible to open the passenger door because the door handle cannot be pulled when the glove box is open. In a crash, this is potentially lethal. It is silly and unfair to nitpick the "feel" of a knob and ignore errors in design like this. Edmunds, and others, paint a too rosy picture of the Odyssey. Based on my experience with our previous Chrysler minivan, the experience to date with the Odyssey, and my careful examination of the ’08 Chrysler, I hope that I get to drive the latter soon.

DC Limited 5.7 4wd Rental Experience
by beanctr on Mon May 28 20:29:44 PDT 2007
Rented a DC Limited 5.7 4wd for the past three days (drove over 500 miles) and came away impressed. This certainly is a much bigger vehicle than the one it replaces. Here's some random observations based on my short stint with the Tundra: -Safety Equipment standard. Bravo to Toyota for making all the safety equipment standard. This alone would make me buy this vehicle over the competition. -Excellent turning radius for such a large vehicle. I came away surprised the first time I did a u-turn. -Very tall vehicle. Even for me at 6'3" and long arms, it was tough to wash the windshield. Also, felt like I could almost look big rig drivers in the eye from their seating position. -Major Power. It won't leave you wanting for power. The 5.7 is monster. Wow!!!! -Smooth Transmission. Drove it over 500 miles in the Sierra Nevada mountains and it always was in the right gear. It did; however, have some rough shifts initially after sitting over night. It quickly disappeared once it warmed up. The automatic transmission shift lever was perfectly placed for the right hand. -Interior Quality ok. The top glove box (there are two) was rather flimsy and unbecoming of a $43,000 truck. Interior door handles didn't inspire ruggedness either. -Fuel Economy good. Average 19.5 miles to the gallon while driving in the mountains. I expected worse due to the large engine and weight of the vehicle. Averaged just over 18MPG in 90% highway/10% city driving in the valley. -Sonar slow to act - Although I didn't depend on the sonar, I did notice there was a definite delay when alerting you to an object. Despite this, I still appreciated the feature. -Expensive. List price for the Limited I drove was $43,000. It did have all the bells and whistles on it (navigation, backup camera, leather, etc), but I still thought it was pricy for what you are getting. Overall a very nice rig.

You can bet the farm Marketing in Fountain Valley / Korea WILL screw up, if Genesis does launch. Why? 1. Hyundai dealer network. If Corporate, dealer sales & service can't figure out the Azera, how will they cope with an upgrade? My closest dealers share Hyundai with other major brands and don't know the difference form a can of shoe polish to a box of Q-Tips 2. They are already behind the curve and exposed to radar..."300 plus HP"? MB "E" and BMW "5" target consumers won't respond, even at 20 grand less. 300C is ready for the next phase. This "new" model is already obsolete to the purist. 3. Bells & whistles...give the consumer what they want and if it exceeds 35 - 40 K for the max. edition, so be it.
Re: Ordering Mazda (or other) SUV without moonroof [budh]
by lateralg on Fri Mar 16 09:08:21 PDT 2007
The CX-9 can be had with all the bells & whistles and NOT the moonroof. But, it would require the Rear Seat Entertainment System. Not all bad if "Are we there yet?" is an issue.
