Re: BMW 325ix seeking honest tech around zip 01845 [dujox]

It looks like you're in the Andover, MA area. My wife has had her '95 318ti serviced for 5 years in Natick, MA in the 01760 code. She has 140,000 miles on that one. The shop is Autobahn Automotive near the corner of Rt 135 & Speen St. I've had my 335xi there as well. They seem to be pretty honest and reasonably priced, and they have worked at BMW dealerships as well. The best news for you is that they also have a larger newer location in Lexington, MA, on Marrett Rd (Rt 2A) not far from Rt 128. I hope you haven't had a bad experience with them seeing as how close they are to you. Ask for Chip. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out. xeye

A8: Audi is always conservative on its exterior designs so along with the signature roofline, new models don't look all that different from the old ones. And it's timeless. The great thing is, the A8 still looks beautiful. I saw a 2008 in a glossy black the other day, and I had to stare. Quite nice. The 2005 looks almost as nice, although I would go with the 2006 instead because the big grille makes it look more "complete." Andover could probably get the 2006 A8 for the price of (or less than) the 2005 S500. Jag: When's the last time the XJ got a major redesign? It will... very soon. Ever seen an XF? Callum is probably working on it as we write this. '08 BMW X5 4.8i • '06 Audi A3 2.0T DSG • '05 Audi S4 Cabriolet

Get a 2005 Audi A8L instead. I say this not as an Audi fanboy, but as a concerned blogger. The "Frenz don't let frenz drive a Benz" phrase was still in use in 2005, I'm afraid. If you don't want to dump $100K on an S550, try to avoid the last-gen model. Pros of the A8L? +Better to drive +Better interior +Worse depreciation (better for you) +Ageless style (2005 S-Class is looking dated, A8L is not) +Better reliability (by 2005, A8's problems were sorted out... S-Class's were not) Go with your gut, though. You said you haven't had problems with the E320? Well, you never know, you could be lucky with the S500. I would try on the A8 first, however. blckislandguy: Thank you for the feedback. The price is 30 thousand. I can buy a 4 year unlimited mileage warranty on the car. MB dealer, Ray Catena in NJ cheked the car out for me, Found the car extremely clean with no major issues. It has the original battery, it does not need tires or breaks, it is missing navigation cd, it is missing key less go key, SC needs recharge, motor mounts need to be replaced. The color combination and how clean the car is on the inside and outside as well as the price is what got our attention. We drove the car and we were impressed with how it handled and the comfort of the cabin. I am waitng for more feedback and my wife and I are looking at all our options and reviewing our concerns. This will be our first S class MB. We own an e320 4matic wagon. It is a 1998 and it still has the original battery. We have had absolutely no problems with our wagon. The wagon has 207 thousand miles and it still drives like new! what are your thoughts/ advice now that you know more? Thank you very much!

'00 to '06 or so is the "dark period" of quality at Mercedes Benz. The new S-class and C-class are supposedly much better built, but they are still having issues with older models and especially the ML/GL/R that come from the Alabama plant. I agree with the other posters that you're looking at a fairly high mileage and rather risky car, for what seems like little payoff. By '05 the old S class was pretty dated in both design and technology compared to new rivals like the Jag XJ and Audi A8. I know most posters on this board could care less about what CR has to say, but it still is worth mentioning that several Audis and most BMWs are now recommended cars, while not a single M-B model is reliable enough (according to them) to be recommended. Personally, I still think a certified '04 or '05 Jaguar XJ is the best used buy in the full-lux category. They're cheap, the XJRs are quite fast, and the NAV systems are far better than the old S-class COMAND systems.

Andover, what is the incentive to buy this very high mileage car? A very low price? A cheap way to get into an S Class? You just love the Designo paint job? Even if it has a low price, where are you in the tires/brakes/battery cycle? Lets suppose that they put new tires and brakes in at 35K. You could be easily looking at $2000 in tires/brakes (pads AND rotors) plus a new battery in just routine maintenance on Day One. Remember: the old wives tale that you don't want to own a 7 Series/S Class or most any Audi out of warranty still applies.
