Re: In retrospect... [circlew]

I was stuck renting an Equinox for two weeks in Hawaii. It was brand new and noisy on bumpy roads and on the highway. Brakes did not sound good either. I have rented several Trailblazers and Explorers over there and none were as junky as that 2008 I was stuck with in April. I told Alamo if they try to substitute again I will get my money back and go rent from one of the others. Mileage was about 18 MPG same as a TrailBlazer.
2008 Chrysler Sebring Rental - 31.5mpg
by kingdomsa on Mon Oct 06 02:35:28 PDT 2008
I just rented a 2008 Alamo Chrysler Sebring (4 cyl auto) out of Detroit and went on an epic 2 week driving quest (e.g. see the college kids). Total of 3433 miles with with 108.9 gallons of gas. Came to 31.5 mpg. Pretty good. I'd estimate 90% hiway, 10% city - averaging 70mph on the hiway. The gas cost was about double of what the car cost to rent. Lowest pirce I got was $3.179 in northern Ohio, highest was $3.809 on the Mass Pike. Overall, the Sebring was a nice car, solid, no squeaks or rattles, good mpg, good handling (but dead steering feel), quiet on the road except for some wind noise. Used the radio input jack to listen to the last harry potter audio book - unabridged, which made the miles fly by. Passed through some beautiful country in a great time of year.
Great MPG

I just had a vacation from Washington. I rented a Yaris sedan from Alamo. This car was great on mpg. The fuel economy is average 42 mpg (80% highway/ 20% city) with A/C on half of the time.

imidazol97: And started downhill in 2003 approx. Reputable surveys show that Toyota and Honda are still tops for reliability, although, among the domestics, Ford is making real gains relative to other companies, and is thus moving up in the rankings. Chrysler not so much, and GM is a mixed bag, with several models showing difficult launches. imidazol97: Do we want to start going through the old posts about problems with the highly popular Accords and Camrys? As has been explained before, these message boards are a poor way to compare the reliability of various makes, given that Toyota and Honda owners are far more likely to post on sites such as this, while domestic car owners tend to be older, less educated and less affluent, and thus are less likely to use the internet. Plus, the domestics sell a hefty percentage of their vehicles to rental car companies, and I seriously doubt that the managers of Hertz, Avis and Alamo have the time to post on this site with their complaints about the LaCrosses or G6s in the company fleet.

I just rented an Impala from Alamo a few weeks ago. I was on a business trip in Ohio, but the car had Mass plates, so it had been around. It was a little rough. The worst part was that the inside of the windshield was filthy, but I didn't realize how bad it was until the setting sun hit it. I had to buy some glass cleaner and clean it up. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother cleaning it at all. I usually throw out any accumilated trash during the last fill up though.

What kind of cars does Hertz rent in their mid sized Mazda 6 size? Getting this size from them in 2 weeks and was hoping they'd consider the Sonata in the same class. Since I'll have the car for a week, really want to try out the '09 Sonata and put it through it's paces. Wouldn't mind a Ford Fusion either. Hopefully I'll have a choice when i go to pick it up. I need a back friendly car and have been upgraded with Alamo and Avis in the past for free. Just wondering what Hertz has in their stables on a regular basis. The Sandman :)
