Re: Considering a TDI for their high fuel economy [bottgers]
by bpeebles on Fri Oct 17 14:42:18 PDT 2008
"What was the first year of the high MPG TDI? " At least as far back as 1981... they were built in Pennsylvania (New Stanton) I have some relatives who used to work there. "How reliable are they" Using the design life-expectancy of the engine (given in hours) and some math (assuming 50MPH average speed)....the TDI engine is rated for at least 300,000 miles. Keep in mind this same basic engine is used in marine applications to move boats over the ocean. "How hard are they to start in cold weather?" Not hard at all... STARTING is not an issue at all. (My TDI starts just fine at -15F) "how long does the engine have to run before they start producing heat from the heater?" Depends on many variables. On a cold morning, (-15F) it may take 10-20 miles of driving. HOWEVER, if you turn the heat all the way up... the engine will NEVER EVER come up to temp. because the heater-core can pull more heat out of the engine than it can create. Never owning a diesel, or a VW before, is there anything else I need to consider? Consider adding diesel-fuel additive at EVERY fillup. There are many benefets including 2-4 more MPG, longer fuelpump life and quieter running. Also, do not assume the dealership knows how to effectively maintain diesel engines beyond basic stuff. You MUST use special oil which is not readilly available in North America. (I order all my supplies from tdiparts.com) Unlike Asian automobiles which can be pretty much ignored... VWs are better off when meticulusly maintained per the reccomended schedule. Best of all.... it is WONDERFUL to be able to travel 700+ miles per tank of fuel!!!!

Re: Volkswagen Reliability? [upstatedoc]

Chrysler started building a factory in New Stanton, PA (Westmoreland County) in the 1960s; however, they never finished it, and subsequently sold it to VW in the mid to late 1970s. VW started producing cars there beginning with the 1978 model year, and did so through late 1988 (including the production of a few 1989 models), however, that was when the dollar was very strong against the European currencies, and what with VW struggling with a sales decline, they shuttered the plant and sold it to the state of Pennsylvania. It sat empty for a couple of years and was eventually taken over by Sony. Unfortunately they seem to be having about as much luck as Chrysler and VW did with the facility, and are apparently on the verge of closing it yet again. Best regards, Shipo

Here is another thing. IF the UAW workers and all their friends and relatives refused to shop at WalMart, Do you think there would be 18 Walmart stores in the Detroit metro area? UAW workers did not worry about those people in the USA making clothes, appliances, household goods, TVs etc, etc when the money was flowing and they were getting great deals at Walmart. It is well documented in the late 1970s, NO BIG 3 car or truck was made 100% in the USA. One vehicle got to claim that fact. It was the VW Rabbit. around 1979, when the oil crisis was at full force. The little Rabbit, combined with the optional 1.5l 4 cylinder Diesel delivered superb fuel economy (45 mpg city/up to 57 mpg highway) The Rabbit had waiting lists at the dealership during that time. Production for the U.S. market moved over here to New Stanton* Pennsylvania in 1978. The first Rabbit rolled of the assembly line on April 10th 1978 with NBC news present to unveil the first foreign car to be built in the USA. Trivia question: Was that PA VW plant UAW or Non Union?

"Chrysler workers represented by the UAW will receive supplemental unemployment benefits for up to 48 weeks. The benefits guarantee most of their base salary. Then, Chrysler will put those workers back on the payroll for up to two years, earning their regular base pay. At the same time, they will be in a "Jobs Bank," where they will wait for work or a chance to transfer to another Chrysler plant." Last day at work for 900 Chrysler workers at Fenton plant (STLtoday.com) "Magna’s profits dropped more than 13 percent in the second quarter, as the Canadian auto parts supplier dealt with slumping auto sales as a result of a slowing economy. More than 2,000 people work at the plant. In an afternoon press conference, UAW Local 624 chief Scott Stanton said, "We just ratified a contract, like everybody is aware, only a few months back and the ink's hardly dry. You can imagine our members are somewhat upset, and I don't blame them. But we will do everything we can to keep this business in Syracuse." Magna considering NPG plant closure (WSYR)
