I got the recall notice back in Dec 2010, didn't really pay much attention to it cuz I never really had any problems with my SUV. Well got the second notice in September and figured I should get it to a dealership. I bought my SUV in Binghamton, NY when I lived there and then moved to NC about 2 years ago. Anyway took my car last Thursday to the dealership and warned them it was pretty bad cuz it had years of snow salt and all the good stuff. The guy from the dealership said no prob we can replace the frame if needed at no cost to you. I was like thats great, I was happy at that moment. The next day I get a call from the dealership Service Manager and was told they could not give me my car back till they heard back from Honda. Ummm WTH is what I thought, what I said was "oh ok. Can ya'll give me an idea of what is going on? Basically my underside, frame brackets and all are so rusted they were afraid to take the bolts off to see what was up. I call Friday to see if they heard anything get told I should hear from Honda on Monday. No call on Monday, I'm slightly irritated at this point cause I have had to borrow cars to get to work. Yes I did ask if they had loner cars and was told no we only rent them. So today I finally get a call from Honda, she tells me she is a mediator for Honda and they will buy my car back for kelly blue book fair market value good condition. Then tells me it will be done as if someone with knowlegde is buying the car. KY anyone. This is the kicker she says she needs a copy of my title and registration before she can tell me what the offer is. I made sure to remind her I bought this SuV because it was a Honda and was supposed to last a while and this mediator tells me well isusu built it. mmmm ponder. I also let her know I planed on having this car for 10 more years or more considering it only has 79000 mi on it. And she said again we are offering fair market value blah blah blah same as above. I am not a happy camper with Honda. I'm have tempted to go to the Honda dealership rent a car and have them pay for it. I already know if this had not happened I would have had my car for at least 10 more yrs, I bought it new off the lot to last. Was my first new vehicle that I owned. I'm really disapointed with Honda for a company with such a good reputation they don't seem to care about keeping it that way. So I guess I need to call a lawyer and let him deal with it.
Read this article on taking to the road vs flying and it pretty much says what I feel about flying anymore. I am done with it except for Hawaii. I don't like long cruises either. Why I'd rather drive than fly I love airplanes. But I hate air travel. When I flew to North Carolina a few weeks ago, the flight was less than two hours, but the actual trip took more than eight. It began with a 4:30 a.m. cab ride to the purgatory that is Pearson Airport, where I joined a 2-1/2-hour customs lineup. I barely made my flight, even though I arrived more than three hours early. The delays continued down in North Carolina. It took half an hour for the luggage to emerge. It took Hertz 90 minutes to find my car. A jet airliner can cruise at 800 km/h, but its speed is nullified by the snails’ pace of everything associated with it. So you’ll understand why I prefer to drive. Consider my recent trip to Manhattan with my wife and two of our best friends. Air Canada wanted $745.26 per person, and we would have to take cabs to and from the airport on both ends, so the total cost would be about $3,400 for two couples. (We could probably have found better fares, but we were still looking at more than $2,000 for the four of us, including cabs.) Then there was the scheduling headaches – arrive at the airport before dawn, pray your flight is on time, wait for your luggage, wait for a cab – the list went on. We decided to drive. A road trip sounded like fun, and I had the perfect vehicle – a Lexus hybrid SUV test car with satellite radio. We left on a Monday morning at 11 a.m. – unlike air travel, the schedule was up to us, and we could carry as many bags as we wanted. (Our only limit was the size of the trunk.) New York was 800 kilometres away. We could do it in a single day, but we decided to take it easy, cruising through small towns and looking at the sights. We spent a night in Binghamton, N.Y., and were in Manhattan by 2 the next afternoon. By the time we got back to Toronto, we had used about $180 worth of gas for the entire journey (both ways, including numerous side trips). Our total trip cost for four people, including tolls, gas and hotels on the road, came to just more than $800 – about $200 each. But the cash savings were only part of the benefit. We had been free to come and go on our own schedule. We didn’t have to pay $5 for an airline snack, pare down our luggage or fill out customs forms while we stood in a two-hour lineup. Just last month, I read the obituary of David E. Davis, founder of Car and Driver magazine and one of my favourite car writers of all time. Although I had read most of his work, the obituary told me something I didn’t know – unless a trip was more than 1,000 miles, David E. refused to fly. Only beyond that distance, he argued, could an airplane’s speed overcome the hellish layers of bureaucracy that came with it – like airport transportation, security lineups and air traffic delays. David E. knew what he was talking about. If there’s an ocean or a continent to cross, I’ll put up with the airlines. For everything else, give me a car and a good travelling companion. As someone once said: airplanes are the fastest way to travel, but only if you have the time. The rest of the story

I had an brand new S10 diesel in 85. With A/C no less. Terrible bench vinyl seat, and was not turbo'd, but aside from that, was a really good little truck. I wish to goodness I had it now. I dealt it when I bought my big truck cuz knew I would be not home most of the time for a number of years. It had the Isuzu diesel. A 2.2 if memory serves? % speed stick on the floor, and extended cab. What a find it was. The dealership didn't even know they had it! I found it myself out back under a huge pile of snow. Some guy had ordered it in to export to Jamaica, and he reneged on the deal. I happened to be at the right place at the right time. I let on that A/C was my priority and that if the price was right I would 'live' with the diesel, lol. Had it not been the diesel I wouldn't have been interested at all. Interestingly enough, while back down in the city visiting about 8 years later, I was sitting at a set of lights and my friend says, Steve, isn't your old truck? I look and sure enough it was! Same colour, the guy was sitting with windows up in A/C comfort. The truck had been well used though but was neat to see it. Aside from the fact just how rare that combo is (probably the only extended cab with A/C ever sold here) there were a couple of identifying marks that I knew it was my old truck. Maybe I am easily amused, but that was pretty cool. I once got 52.5 mpg on a return trip from TO to Binghamton NY with A/C on. My usual was around 42 flogging it most of the time. If I owned that truck new today, I would invest in a turbo for it. That would have really woken it up. It had pwr steering too..woohoo..
Once I decided on the Outback I went to http://www.pricequotes.com/index.html I looked in my area (Binghamton, NY) and because I have some family in Bergen county, NJ, I got some quotes there too. Wonderful response time and the real players were as follows: Bill Kolb Jr. Subaru (NJ) - Very straightforward. Will sell @ invoice. Ramsey Subaru (NJ) - Asked for a competitive bid on a limited and he said straight out '500 under invoice'. The only small gotcha is that they had a $299 doc fee which wiped out some of the gain. Matthews Subaru (Binghamton area) - This is my local dealer. The internet rep was friendly and willing to work with me based on my NJ quotes. The sales rep who represented my walk in experience for the test drive was wonderful too. Bottom line.... The dealers had the following prices to order this car (which includes moonroof, Homelink compass auto-dim mirror, bumper cover and media hub) Matthews = 29117 +147.5 in fees. Ramsey = 28571 + 359 in fees. Matthews said they couldn't go more than 200 below invoice but gave me a more than a fair price on my trade in... about 500 over TMV@edmunds (3k for 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 103,300 miles) which made them competitive. Assuming Ramsey could at least match the trade in offer (which of course they can't do sight unseen), the difference between the dealers was $365. At that price, a 'looks see' trip to NJ seemed less appealing. I suggested that if they can cut another three hundred I'll skip the NJ trip and buy local..... they came back with 200 added to my trade in value which was good enough for me. So, bottom line.... 29,117 - 3,200 (trade) + 2,073.36 (8% NYS tax) + (147.5 fees) I am at $28,137.86 OTD. Matthews Subaru was wonderful to deal with on this and since I proceeded with my internet quotes and was willing to commit to a trip if the price was worth it, I found everything smooth and easy. I highly recommend them. Ramsey, if I lived closer, would have been good too and I may have been able to get an even better deal there, depending on where they came in on the trade. I put down my deposit tonight and I'll update with better details as they unfold while I wait 4-6 weeks. Thanks, Claude
