05 Pathfinder SE-OR-Rear brakes/rotors
by 05se on Sat Sep 20 17:48:47 PDT 2008
During a routine oil change at the dealer, the service manager tells me that the rear brake pads need replacement and rotors "resurfaced". Gives me a price of around $230 with labor. Okay............ Went out and purchased new rear brake pads, around $30.00. The next day I went to the mechanic down the street to have them do the work. Explained my situation and what needed to be done. When I mentioned about resurfacing the rotors, he asked me if the rotors were steel or composite. Not knowing the answer, I called the service department at two Nissan dealers to confirm, and both told me that they were steel. Good, since I never budgeted for new rotors......I can have them resurfaced. Truck goes on the lift, rear tires and wheels removed. "We have a problem" says the manager. "These are not steel, they're composite. Resurfacing ain't gonna work." He takes the rear left rotor off, shows it to me. Yup, the thing is warped as a you know what........Bit the bullet and had steel rotors installed, about $70 each. Anyone with an 05 or later had a similar experience like this? I think it's just BS that Nissan uses inferior rotors that warp too easily. I know they (and other manufacturers do this), but why cut corners? Just had to vent for a bit.

Rablaw, We used Peter Wendell at Paul Miller Audi in Parsippany, NJ. Based on him making good on an error and giving us an $858 refund out of his own pocket, I'd definitely trust him to buy a car from him again. We've known Peter since before he was a salesman (he came from the Service Dept). For service...well, we had not been particularly happy with Paul Miller circa ~2004, but this is a dated experience. Peter has said that they've gotten better; we will see, at the car's 5K checkup in ~6 months. For genuine OEM Dealership, I've heard very good things from a coworker advocating Audi of Mendham, NJ, but I haven't tried them yet myself to verify how they do. I expect that we'll give Paul Miller a chance (5K service) and if it isn't stellar, perhaps go try Mendham the next time we absolutely must have a dealership touch the car. Otherwise, the place we've been going for Audi service for the past ~5 years has been Foreign Aid in Mendham; the owner "Kenny" has implicitly earned our trust. For Mercedes, I didn't care for the salesman at MB of Morristown, nor that he lied to me about document processing (claimed that a buyer couldn't go to DMV to get his own plates). So I went to MB of Newton, NJ; the salesman was Reid [something] ... Ried was easy to deal with. Unfortunately, this is probably a very long haul for you from Bargain/Passaic/Essex. For MB service, Newton has been good, although a bit inconvenient and of course MB Expensive. As such, I've been trying a local independent garage (Felipe at Precision Auto Center; Rt 46 West, Rockaway NJ). So far, he's done well enough for fairly routine work and has done a "make it good at my expense" on one item, so I'll continue to go there for now...it helps that he's only 5 minutes from home. Finally, for all "wheels" stuff, I've been using Eurotire in Fairfield, NJ (on Rt 46 East) for 20+ years. I've known the current owner Bill Bloomfield since he was an employee there, which is more than just a few years ago now. Eurotire used to mostly do just tires, rims, balancing, allignments and shocks/struts, but now also does brakes, CV/drive axles, 4-corner weight balancing, etc, etc. Bill is a significant supporter of the local Porsche Club (PCA) chapter of Northern NJ and he often volunteers/donates his shop for Tech Inspections, etc. He's a genuine enthusiast worth supporting who does high quality work, is always honest with you, a good value, and is very flexibile in working with your needs. <a href="http://www.eurotire.com/" -hh

played basketball in the city parks from the Bronx to Harlem to Central Park to Jamaica to Far Rockaway to West 4th Street. You were good enough to play at West 4th? Nice!

I lived and worked in NYC from 67 to 97 and took every subway line and walked just about everywhere and played basketball in the city parks from the Bronx to Harlem to Central Park to Jamaica to Far Rockaway to West 4th Street. I never at anytime even in the darkest days of the 70s had any trouble.....ever. There were definatly problems, since this was the time of 'American Gangster' and Nicky Barnes and Son of Sam. But with foresight and street smarts there never was much trouble. Actually the situation just got better and better all the time. When in college I drove a cab 6PM to 5AM in the summers. Again nada.

Not really.. I lived the NYC transit system for the better part of 30 yrs from when it was a dime up to 10 yrs ago. Hoboken to Penn Sta to Grand Central to a) Boston or b) Chicago is somewhat disjointed within Manhattan but easily doable on the No 1 plus the TSGC shuttle, Now as noted previously there is no direct subway connection to the airports ( which is a glaring deficiency ) but subway plus bus is ( was? ) available. The City is too developed now to put in a new highspeed rail system connecting the three airports economically so a more creative solution must be found. Why they haven't extended the #7 train to Laguardia over the last 40 yrs to me is something more than oversight. TLC pressures not to do it? Similarly the line out to Far Rockaway could easily have a spur to JFK... but no.. TLC pressures again?
Beware Jeep Dealer,NJ
by thong24k on Mon May 05 19:18:14 PDT 2008
I just got ripped off from Jeep dealer at Dover Dodge in Rockaway. I don't know if anyone can give me advise. Or better yet for someone who look to buy any new car at this dealer. After the agreement of purchase price of Jeep Patriot for 19380 less dealer incentive 2500. When you get in the finance guy, he will tried to trick you anyway he can. He gave you a bunch of paper to sign. Here is for extended warrantee sign here and here...then he asked if I need a Maint. contract for the cost of $595 ...I said no. He will tried to rush you so you don't have time to read all the contract. At the end, with very little consideration time, he still sneak in the cost of Window ETCH $289 + Ser cont$1553 which when we talked he said 1268 then Life ins. which he never mention $303. When tell him, he said come back tomorrow because he has another customer waiting. BEWARE NEVER BUY THE VEHICLE FROM THIS DEALER or look carefully...don't be a full like me. This is the worst experience of buying the car from dealer. I have purchased the car from Honda before they were very nice more upfront, the after service were the best. I decided to buy the Jeep because it's cheaper, but here I ended up paying more.
