Rear Vision
by occking on Wed Apr 11 08:25:58 PDT 2007
I thoght this might interest some of you guys... I have 06 with Nav System and have come to conclusion that many owners have already come to -- the rear vision for this vehicle is terrible. Worse vehicle I have ever had, in that respect. I have been trying to figure out a way of getting a rear view camera installed. Looked at the cheap ones that you casn get for around $100 at Pep Boys, even BJ's & ruled them out. Screen too small & I suspect they don't work that well. Now have found there are relatively decent Audiovox units that use a larger rearl-view mirror that places over existing one & the left hand side, about 4" wide can serve as a screen. Almost bought one of those yesterday -- prices seem to be around $500 installed. Still, however I was not thrilled about having a rear view mirror much larger than the present one (although that would have been an "auto-dimming one" which it itself would be an upgrade and, theoreticaly it could be left on all the time while driving (although that is supposedly illegal) Now today, I found at Auto Sound, Plainville, MA (I have had SM radio's and sunroof's installed at their place before) that they can order a part that will enable me to use my existing Nav System, they will install a camera withi the bumper and it will be just like the factory option. I am areally pleased as until this morning, everyone kept telling me that was impossible to "retro" the 06 to be able to do this with existing Nav system. Cost is $700, so $200 more than the alternatives, but this will give a nice big screen & operate exactly as the one in the 07 would.

We got the car in Plainville, CT. I assume you mean $0 down for out the door cost? We didn't get Package 1, we got the "Standard" edition (base), right below package 1. They are also advertising a "Value Edition" which is only about $1000 less than the Standard, but not much of a difference in options. The MSRP was $23,900.
Re: Hard Top [koolbreeze2]

I'm with Keats, John. Hang on to the hardtop. I love mine in these harsh CT winters. Having rear defrost and wiper is important to me. I have the older style softop, so the hardtop is quite a bit warmer / quiet. If for some reason you do decide to sell it, I know a guy in Plainville looking for one. My email is public, just let me know. I can't remember who asked, but I replaced my rear defrost "button / switch" pretty easily and cheaply. It sounded to me like the switch might be the problem, since you're not even getting the light to come on. BTW- thanks to all who posted advice / instructions on the intermittent instrument cluster issue. I followed the advice and tweaked the connectors added dielectric grease a few weeks ago and haven't had the problem since. One more thing- I lied :P I'm still getting rubbing noise at full turn with my new BFG 31's. Tom, in past posts you mention using washers to cure this. Silly question; do the washers simply go on the lugs? Oh...Mac, sounds like you need to mount a satellite dish to the highest tree :P -Dan

George & Koolbreeze, I also live in CT. I'm in Plainville. Yes it is very plain :) George, there are two Jeep dealers near us that I can think of. One in New Britain, which I got a bad vibe from a few years ago. One in Bristol, Rt 6. I bought my TJ used off a private owner, so I don't have any buying expierence but the service / parts dept, of the Bristol dealer, has been very helpful and nice everytime I stop by. Also, just wanted to throw in my 2 cents about putting the soft top up and down. Once I got the hang of it, it became pretty easy. Since the weather constantly changes out here, I've gotten lots o' practice! When it cools off at night, is when it's toughest. The canvas shrinks as it gets cooler, making it much harder to latch hooks at the windshield. Not sure whether the new tops do the same. -Dan
