48 mpg
by misa on Wed Aug 13 10:06:28 PDT 2008
I have a 2003 Ford Focus ZX3 manual. I drove 380 miles from Binghamton, NY to Pittsburgh, PA going mostly the speed limit or under, ranging from 45-50 mph in construction zones, 55 mph zones and 65 mph interstate. I got 48 mpg with gasoline from Mobil. I didn't use A/C or the cd player. I had the windows up and the fan going at 2. On the way back, I used gasoline from BP and got all the way back to Binghamton without having to stop for gas. I only used 8.8 gallons of gas for 382 miles so I got about 43 mpg. There were alot of stop and go construction on the way back on 80 E. I was amazed I could get so much mpg from a Ford Focus. I didn't use the brakes very much and was able to coast down the hills without using the accelerator. When I used to go 75-85 mph, I only got 30 mpg. When I went 95 mph, I only got 26 mpg. For regular city driving, I get about 29 mpg.

Platters? I'm still trying to figure out how you saw the Righteous Brothers when there's only been one Righteous Brother for a number of years now. BR - cool. The Rock Cats are in the Eastern League which is a cool minor league. You get to check out the Binghamton Mets, the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) and the Trenton Thunder (Yankees - it just kills me - they used to be the Red Sox) and all sorts of fun teams. I'll be overnighting in Danbury Friday into Saturday. If you were in the neighborhood I'd let you buy me breakfast.... Heading up to see friends in New Hampshire for Memorial Day despite $4 gas.

Ozzy, I'm in upstate NY as well, Binghamton, and am interested in what dealers you worked with and which one you ended up with and how you got your great price. I'm looking for an LX Manual Transmission. I've just started looking and have one initial email quote for 16,400 from a Syracuse dealer. Any info would be a big help. Thanks, Scott

If you are willing to go upstate, you can get better deals. Matthews Mazda near Binghamton, NY had a 08 GT AWD, no options but floor mats, MSRP 28 something. They offered it straight up after a test drive for ~25,600 without even negotiating. Mazda at the time was offering 1500 cash back also, dont know if thats still there.

hab, you're from PA, right? Where in PA do they get 120 inches of snowfall a year? I think you're a bit off. I'm from upstate NY (Binghamton to be exact) and we used about 3 snow days a year on average in my HS days ('84-'88 for those keeping score) and averaged about 80-90 inches of snowfall a year. I've got a ton of relatives throughout eastern PA and they were always several inches behind anything we ever got when the snow came.

Kate! Congratulations. As a Cornell alumnus, I can tell you that driving in snow is going to be a regular experience for your daughter!! Which school is she going to? I do believe there are flights from the NYC area to Ithaca airport. I recall taking a flight from LaGuardia a looong time ago. Ithaca airport is much closer than Syracuse. Another option would be trying to fly into Binghamton as well. Hertz and Avis both carry Outbacks depending on their location. It's best to call the office at the airport directly as national reservations won't be able to tell you specifically what model you'll get. Ithaca is dreadful in the winter, but the summers and fall are absolutely gorgeous. If your daughter decides to go, I'd highly recommend a trip there in the fall when school begins. The fall foliage and crisp weather is forever etched into my memories. Ken
