I took a walk around the local auto show...

starting at the GM display, since it was right by the door I came in. The Malibu has good fit and finish and good materials, but unfortunately I think a few design shortcomings will hold it back. The swoopy roofline really cuts down on the rear headroom and makes it somewhat perilous to exit the front seats without banging your head on the roof pillar. The cutouts in the backs of the front seats provided just enough rear leg room, but the hard plastic back meant that edges of the alcove dug into my knees. The very long rear window and the nonintrusive trunk hinges and struts make the trunk opening very small for a car its size, no bigger than the opening on the Cobalt right next to it. The manual door lock tabs at the rear of the doors are in a horrible position. They really need to be the de facto standard pivoting nubs in the notch with the interior door latch pulls. The Malibu was almost there, but the designers shot it in the foot. The CTS was nice, but rather small inside for such a large car. I hit my head on the roof liner hump for the sunroof. Unless you really like Cadillac styling, the Lexus IS provides a roomier, lighter, faster car with better instruments for the same money. Oh, and who decided that the best place for the trunk release was under the rear of the driver's side door handle? :confuse: I don't know who approved the chassis bracing for the LaCrosse Super, but they should be fired immediately. Those two pressed-end steel tubes under the hood look cruddy enough on the Impala SS, but they look absolutely atrocious on a Buick. The Aveo manual has a lifting ring for the left-up reverse, even though it's only a five speed. Who knew?

You should see the interior. :cry: The blue bomber is actually a Timor: a controversial Indonesian badge job on the Sephia. The black one is a Kia Picanto (Euro-style supermini) with the license plate alcove flushed off and the plate mounted on the wiper. :sick:

I checked and the B13 has goosenecks. They are widely spaced and tuck into an alcove in the trunk liner by the wheel wells, so the crush risk is pretty minimal.

Now just a minute. I agree that many 2-stroke engines are being phased out but there are still quite a few 2-stroke motors...examples: weed eaters, Lawnboy mowers, chainsaws, yard equipment, water craft, and even aircraft, etc. Back in the early 40's for several years there were 2 stroke diesel railroad locomotives. Alcoves they were called and very efficient and durable. Their only downfall was messy and noisy. The EMD's followed that would do them in. I just wondered if today's technology could build a better mouse trap out a 2-stroke diesel. Less moving parts combined with an electric motor. Remember the efficiency that is noted in a 2-stroke and the automatic injection of oil or synthetic lubeing of same said engine. I'm note sure what you mean by,"packaging". Culliganman

I had the same problem -- wanted to improve the bass performance after I upgraded my door speakers. I too didn't want to put a subwoofer in the cargo compartment as my philosophy is that this space should be available for hauling stuff and not housing the sound system. I had pretty much the entire interior of the cargo compartment taken apart for an unrelated reason and thus am aware of what's behind the cosmetic plastic panels, and can tell you there there really isn't enough space for subwoofers anywhere back there. I thought about putting subwoofers under the floor of the cargo compartment on either side of the spare tire, but didn't like the idea of having grill cloth or holes on the floor of the cargo compartment where debris from hauling stuff can settle. Also this would cause the the sound to be muffled when stuff is hauled that covers the subwoofers. I thought about putting a Kenwood KSC-WA62RC, the smallest powered subwoofer system I'm aware of (only 15" x 8" x 4.5") under the rear seat, but realized this wouldn't work after I noticed that the bottom of the rear seats move downward when the rear seats are folded down to extend the cargo area. Placing this subwoofer under the front passenger seat would be an option except for me as this is where my aftermarket amplifier is located. (The front driver's seat is not an option if you have the powered driver's seat due to space limitations.) For the fun of it I've thought of designing a equalization filter to compensate for the weak bass response of the existing speakers (Has anyone tried this? Is it possible to coerce 6-1/2" speakers to deliver strong bass?). If this doesn't pan out, I may install a pair of Kenwood KSC-WA62RC's, or possibly an Infinity Basslink (the second-smallest powered subwoofer system I'm aware of) in the cargo compartment, vertically oriented in the alcoves behind the wheel wells, where they will have minimal impact on cargo space.

I actually did not install it myself. I was doing the 15,000 mile service at around the same time, so i just had them do it. I may have paid a little more than the wrench monkeys at best buy, but at least it's probably done better. I don't think it's pre-wired, but I might be wrong, i didn't see them do the work. That alcove in the left side of the trunk could fit a CD changer, but it wouldn' fit well in there because the magazine couldn't eject out properly. It is on the left side, about 9" away from the side wall, with a north-south orientation. It actually works out well, because i can put stuff inbetween it and the trunk sidewall and it won't move around as much. I also heard about the burned CD reading ability, and I don't know anything about that... Hope this helps.. aw
