Let's Keep it Real

Goodness, these posts are often so full of hyperbole that an honest read is tough. Does the Grand Prix score a 0 on a desirability scale? I suppose that would mean Pontiac didn’t sell any GPs in 2007. I’ll bet there are many satisfied GP owners out there, just not zero. Now, the Chevy Volt comes into the crosshairs. I think GM avoided mimicking the Prius. They have several different kinds of hybrids for sale now, but the Volt seems to leapfrog the Prius as it is more an electric vehicle than a hybrid. It has a small gasoline engine whose sole purpose is to charge the car’s batteries. They say Volt can go 40 miles on just the batteries. After that, the gasoline engine comes on to charge the batteries. I have heard a price of about $30K for a 4 seater that can get the equivalent of between 100 to 150 miles per gallon while the gasoline engine stays off. Of course, that mileage will depend on the price of electricity from the grid. When the gasoline engine starts coming on, the gas mileage is 40 to 55 MPG, similar to that of the Prius. So, if one can drive less than 40 miles between plug in charges, the gas engine never comes on and you use no gas. The batteries have been the holdup. I hear that Toyota and GM have been courting a company called A123 Systems who just recently made a series of breakthroughs to make the “40 miles on batteries only claim” possible. It appears that this time, GM will have a car on sale like this before Toyota does. Only time will tell. I have heard 2010 will be the year that the Volt becomes available. Use Google and YouTube to find out all the information one could want about the Volt. By the way, the Volt is quite a looker.

My 1965 Buick has a interior trunk release. So did my Dad's 76 and 86 Caddies.

Merc1 says "the CTS-V can’t even keep a M5 in sight. Period." I thought about that and decided to look at Road and Track's Summary from December 2005 that was lying on the floor. M5:0-60 is 4.8 seconds, 0-100 is 11.3 seconds, the 1/4 mile is 13.3@108.5, top speed is 155 MPH, 60-0 is 116 feet, 100-0 is 203 feet, the slalom was 66.4 MPH, and the observed gas mileage was 18.2 MPG. The CTS-V has the following stats to compare:5.0, 11.4, 13.4@109, 163, 115, 202, 66.0, and 17.1. I simply do not see the huge performance disparity that you quote. The cars seem very well matched to me, performance wise. The comment about the "truck engine" is one of the most false statements I have ever heard. These forums are good for that though. Just make a statement - that makes it true.

A lot of people may drive a particular car to try to hide the fact that they are getting old and grey. A mid life crisis maybe? Corvettes are not the only cars that can fill this bill. I bought a Corvette 2.5 years ago for a completely different reason. Daily, my Z06 provides more performance and fun for the price than I could get from any other manufacturer. I don't think drivers should worry about what somebody else thinks. Drive what you like.

The Cobalt SS has a supercharged ecotec. It makes sense that a version of the Solstice's ecotec could be supercharged some day.
Re: Ferrari vs. Chevy?? [spiritinthesky]

Do you seriously believe that a "Ferrari 7 liter, 800 horsepower engine" or a Honda 7 liter, 840 horsepower engine would fit under the hood of a new Corvette? The entire Overhead Vs Underhead Cam thing has been explored over and over again and the "packaging factor" often gets ignored. The fact that GM can put 7 liters in a smallblock should be a engineering achievement, not ridiculed as same-old, same-old. Some posters need to open their eyes to "today". Should I let my S2000 purchase be determined by Honda's rust-out problem from 30 years ago?
