My ASP light on but went off the next time I drove the car and haven't had any problems since. I asked the tech to look into right before my warranty expired and they couldn't find anything.
What to do when
by brnorthcutt on Tue Oct 17 01:45:33 PDT 2000
In Sept. 1993 I bought a 1993 Dodge Caravan that had the ABS pump, piston and master cylinder redone at 55,000 miles. After the repairs the ABS & brakes lights continued to linger on for a minute or two after the engine was engaged. The lights would flicker on and off sporadically with intermittent hardness in the pedal. Chrysler subsequently extended the warranty on this to 100.000 miles with a lifetime warranty on the piston. Between August 15th of 2000 and Sept 4th, I experienced 5 separate brake failures separated by days of no brakes and then suddenly the brakes would start working again. I had three different relay switches replaced and the brake fluid changed. I had the mechanic come to my home and pick up the van while the brakes were not functioning but by the time it was hooked up to the computer in his shop the brakes were working again and no errors/problems were detected. They kept the van for two weeks and put 300 miles on it trying to force the brakes to fail again. On September 18th I picked up the van and I was told to bring it back immediately should the brakes fail again so they could hook it back up to the computer so they could fix whatever was wrong with it. The brakes failed around 7:30p.m. on Sept. 29th. Of course no facility was open. October 2, 2000 I filed a complaint with the NTSHA and UGetHeard.com. Chrysler called and spoke to my husband on October 6th. The van was taken into Bill Bryan Chrysler in Fruitland Park, Fl on October 9th where the ABS piston pkg, pump and motor and ABS pump relay was replaced. At about 4:30 p.m. on October 11th I picked up my van with most of the work being done by warranty service with the exception of my portion of the bill being $128.66. On Friday morning, October 13th the ABS brakes failed as did the emergency brake which my daughter applied when the ABS system failed. She had a 9 year old, an 11 year old, and a 5 month old in the van with her. She was scared to death. The brakes started working about 30 minutes later but than failed as I was driving the vehicle back to Bill Bryan Chrysler later that afternoon When the advisor, Rick Lemoyne moved the van the brake pedal was hard with practically no brakes. Today, however, when we called to check on the van the brakes had started back working again. This is a dilemma. I can't drive a vehicle where you can never assume that the vehicle once started will stop. This gives an entirely new meaning to the term defensive driving. Does anyone out there have any practical solutions to this problem. Had Chrysler been honest with me in 1995 about the inherent problem that had been manifesting itself in its ABS brakes in the 1993 Dodge Caravan I would have traded it in then when the trade-in value was respectable. I had been told that this problem was one of a kind. Rick Lemoyne, himself, told me that he had only seen one other van with problems like mine. It's funny, however, that when you log on to the NTSHA that you can pull up over 100 ABS complaints filed with them on the 1993 caravan. I know I counted them last week. I'm between a rock and a hard spot as what to do with this vehicle. Any ideas?
