Re: Loose Sterring Wheel?? [boston08]
by pepe13pepe on Thu Sep 18 01:25:12 PDT 2008
im replying to your post again because i just fixed my rack and pinon and got it done two days ago. After fixing that I found out my tilt had come loose, so i took off the cover to replace it. I fixed that but still had play in my from left to right. The play I had in my steering wheel was due to the two cases that connect where your tilt is. (sorry i am not clear as to what the specific name of it is). Anyways I had to remove the piece to see if i could get it welded, long story short, it was a pain in the ass and i wasted a couple hours figuring out how to fix this(because i am not that mechanically inclined). Heres how it goes to check if that piece is broken or if the tilt is messed up. There are six screws in the steering wheel case that must be romoved to open it and the only way to get to them is from under the case. Three in the bottom half and three that screw up into the top half. One of those last three you must get to by sneeking up through the hole where your tilt lever is. If our cars are the same (which they should be, as all 95-99's are) then you will have to use a 1/4" 5mm socket and a 1/4 extension would be the best. the case is then only held together by clips, just squeeze and pull and the case should seperate. (you have to remove the tilt knob cover which is held in by one screw i think) Once that is removed you will see the guts, now if the TILT is out of position you will be able to tell by looking underneath, if you can see the two sets of teeth sticking out and not in the case, then thats your problem right there, which hopefully thats all that it is. But if they appear to be positioned right then check the right and left sides to the two aluminum half cases meet each other. they should be held together by a pin (actually two seperate pins). but on mine, the part where the two meet from the rear half case was broken and that had to be welded. and fixed. I could walk you through the process of how to remove that piece which is not that hard but due to the lack of time that i have right now, i cannot explain. Please leave a post if you need further instructions or feel free to call me at 269 290 3735 and leave me a message, as i usually dont pick up numbers that i dont know,. I would gladly help you all that i can. All of the repairs ive done this past week wouldve cost me close to $1500 if not more and in all i spent maybe 200. Hope to save you money and hope this helps

I finally got my steering fixed. The tie rod bushings had already been replaced with the new style. I had a rebuilt rack and pinon installed. I did just what the gov't wanted, I stimulated the auto repair economy with my stimulus check. I accused the service manager of knowing the amount and trying to get it all. :-) Runs great now. Going for another 50K miles.

hello Barabra I am having a lot problems with the vibration in the engine at a steady speed 40-45. there is a definate problem with the Nitro 3.7 and Chrysler is not on top of it. At one point they told me there was not fix Here is what they have done 4/18 Torch Converter replaced. did not work Reprogrammed power train 4/18 Gas additive - Did not work 4/18 5/3 tansmission Friction Modifier 5/3 - Did not work 5/9 Cylinoid pack for Torch Converter which Made it worst, Darin said the factory thinks its a bad Torch converter and is shipping another one. 5/12 Picked up from Dodge and was told to pursue the Lemon Law on this car 5/12. Was told Their is a problem and the factory has no fix for it. ( see purchase order included) 5/15 sent certified letter to diamler defect notification. 5/27 factory called and wanted to attempt more repairs they have representative in town. I was told that, that did not work but they want to keep another day to work which is today) 5/28 Chrysler factory technician came in to work ont the car. this is what he did Applied TSB 02-005-07 - No change (Chrysler tech words) Adjust front and rear suspension -- no changes Shimmed transmission crossmember 1/2” to change angle - a little better Shimmed it another 1/2” - no better (Chrysler tech words) Shimmed it another 3/8” (Chrysler tech words) Swapped out drive shaft for a stock unit - no change (Chrysler tech words) Repositioned rear support links to adjust pinon angle - a little better (Chrysler tech words) Replaced crankshaft damper - good (Chrysler tech words) The dealer ship said I could pick the car up and that it was 90% better. I drove it and Instead of vibrating at 40-45mph it does it 44-46 mph I am getting everything together an contacting an attorney.

You might want to get your gears checked out. The only thing i can think of is since you put a lift and a little bigger tires it can slowly wear the gears down so you might want to get the gears checked out see if the pumpkin has any metal shavings from the ring and pinon. As for the heat check the connection between the wire and the fan. Mine use to do that until i got a new wire. And if its not that then its the fan the reason it work when your driving is cause the fan moves when you drive when you don't drive it stays still. Does it stop working when your at a light or stopped.
