Trip to Dallas

Took the new Cobalt coupe over to Ft. Worth and Dallas (about 450 miles) this weekend just to see what the car was like on the road. It ranged from 33-38 MPG -I drove usually 60-70 mph on cruise. As I suspected the short seats caused some thigh pain after a few hours but you have plenty of room to move your legs around. What was amazing was the passing power and the fact that after 6 hours my back didn't hurt. The Impala caused back aches and it still had bucket seats. The lumbar control is helpful but so is the fairly hard seat that provides good support. Handling was fine in heavy traffic on the Interstates around the Metroplex. All in all it was a good road car. The steering wheel is better on the Impala -bigger controls and more tilt. You feel the pavement, bumps,and, road noise is worse than my Cadillac Deville but for the money (and for even more money) the Cobalt is a fine car. I didn't buy it for long distance trips but it is very capable of them. I like the big doors and windows on the coupe. The sedan feels smaller.

The annual buyers guide from Consumer Reports panned the Cobalt as usual. What was interesting was the black mark signifying the fact that owners (who answered the annual questionnaire) were highly dissatisfied with the car and most likely wouldn't buy another. I wonder what is so wrong with this car. The coupe is sportier than anything else in the price range, the powertrain is fairly simple, gas mileage is average for a compact, and the car rides as well as an Impala. I haven't had any problems with mine thus far although I understand from the dealer that the 05 and 06's had lots of annoying small problems.
Future DTS

I hear that with GM's problems they will be postponing any effort to combine the STS and DTS into a smaller car to replace the present DTS.. This would have put it into a position to compete with new Lincoln midsize that is larger than the Fusion. I'm not happy about downsizing the DTS but the basic design dates from 2000 and I'd like to see something new that looks more like the Sixteen. As things stand now I'll trade my 2003 Deville for a certified 09 DTS in the spring of 2010.

There was no need for me to buy a 2009 Cobalt 1LT off the lot during the Employee Discount Sale in September. It is the last one that I'll buy off a lot. I would have preferred to delete the stupid spoiler and the worthless remote start thereby saving enough to purchase the Pioneer Stereo which I did want. The new Red Tag Sale seems to offer just as attractive a discount as the Employees sale and you have until early January to take delivery which means that you can probably order one.

As I recall my Impala had Integrity tires. They were just fine. I frankly don't think that there is anything different about the XFE tires. Frankly tires are tires. When I replace them I usually go with the same brand and size that were on when new. I figure that GM knows more about appropriate tires than I do. I am sorry though that I don't have alloy wheels on my LT1. As I said I got it off the lot. I would have gotten an LT2 if I'd ordered one.

I have some problems with the road test. First off, the mileage difference between a bare bones LS XFE and my 09 LT1 coupe that has all the basics -automatic, cruise, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, keyless entry etc along with better seats is minimal. Why be uncomfortable for a couple of miles per gallon. I can always drive slower if I have problems with gas mileage, I have the same tires as the XFE. Apparently all LSs and LT1s have the same tires - Continentals. I do not have ABS. I drive mostly in a small town and see no real advantage in ABS. I got my car off the lot so I didn't have an option. I drove for 40 years without ABS and am still here. A downside with ABS is sensor replacement at 60-80k miles. The sensors are expensive and not covered under the old warranties. I have no problem with handling. I'm not trying to run an obstacle course -I just drive the car normally. When you turn the wheel to the left the car goes left. Same as when you turn the wheel to the right or drive in a straight line. I don't have traction control either. I have a Cadillac with all that stuff on it and use it mainly for road trips. I get 30 mpg on the road with my 03 Cadillac DeVille. If the difference in cost between a stripped XFE and a decently equipped LT1 is important then go buy a used 08 LT1 or LT2. They are all over the place with under 10,000 miles and cost less than a new XFE with cheap seats and no power windows. I rented a Caliper in Baltimore a couple of weeks ago and it had no options at all except automatic. It was a pain winding down windows, adjusting mirrors, and having no keyless entry. I rented a Cobalt LT1 Sedan a week later in Philadelphia and it had all the basics. The lack of cruise control was a pain -I had to drive to Harrisburg - but I could live with it. In short, I have a problem with road test people determining handling by driving at various speeds among cones and trying not to hit them. People don't drive like that and I've never driven any car that didn't handle normally -even a Corvair!. Frankly I discount all road tests. I drive a car or cars myself and choose one depending on my own preferences. One problem with the Cobalt and other cars I've owned -like my 06 Impala - is the short seat. After a couple of hours your thighs hurt because they have no support under them. You try and scrunch back in the seat and there is no place to go. Road test people rarely do long term tests and never mention this. My Cadillac is fine. You can drive for days without any discomfort . Another problem is the relatively small trunk opening. It is annoying to have to load large boxes through the door. There is plenty of room but lousy access. I think that the road test was biased. The off the cuff photo of the window crank pointed to the tester's annoyance because basic equipment was lacking and that colored the review. You get what you pay for.
