If you take into account the structural advantage of TDI diesels vs turbo gassers the answer is less for the gassers. This is demonstrated time after time (x whatever factor) in fuel.gov I believe that one of the reasons why Wayne Gerdes (anyone can google) the mpg guru, stays with gassers to get his very high mileage results is that what he does is an object lesson of sorts and most of his target audience drive ... gassers. I think he would lose some credibility if he did his schtick with the few available TDI's. This is purely op/ed AND I have never met nor have had any dealings with bpeebles, but my mpg results are in line with what he states. It is easy to get 50 mpg with literally no effort. All I reasonably do is keep the speeds under 95 mph In a grueling highway 101 commute (our host Shiftright will attest) the mpg range has been 48-52 mpg. The range of mpg has been 44 to 62 mpg over the life of the vehicle and it has app 175,000 miles. On Shiftright's TDI observations, yes 40-45 mpg has been the practical range of the DSG TDI Jetta. (up and down highway 5, and in Portland, Vancouver BC, Seattle. terrible traffic jams) On recent trips (fuel tank fills) I have gotten 42 mpg. Again no real effort. All I did this time was keep it under 95 mph. I suspect I could post better mpg with the 6 speed manual.

I remember actually witnessing a traffic jam in the making. I was heading to John Wayne (SNA) for a 0 dark thirty departure on the 405. Traffic was still somewhat light, but you could tell by the headlights in the opposite direction that some vehicles were lolligagging in the middle and left lanes and it wasn't that much longer that traffic was starting to back up behind them. Left lane bandits do cause traffic messes and so does Larsb if (and I emphasize the "if") he truly pulls into faster lanes to deliberately slow down traffic. My personal opinion is that if he truly does this consistently in a major metropolitan area he would have been in an accident by now.

Hi guys....I have a 2001 GMC sierra 1500 extended cab with only 40,000 miles on it. I'm the original owner, so I know it's never been mistreated. Never had occasions to use the 4 wheel drive mode (hi or lo) and always drove in 2 wheel drive. Last week I tried to use it and something is wrong. It shifts into and out of 2wd, 4wd hi, lo and auto fine. The problem is when I'm in either 4wd hi or 4wd lo and I turn the wheels a bit to the left or right to navigate a curve (even starting out from a standing still position), when it starts to move in the direction of the turn, the truck jerks badly in both forward and also in reverse. There is a loud clunking noise every time it jerks. If I'm going straight without turning the wheels...no problem. All 4 wheels pull and no clunk or jerk. The 2wd mode has no problem whatsoever. Any suggestions as to what may be causing it????? Thanks in advance....Wayne

Basically, GM makes msot of it's volume cars (no trucks here - CUV's don't count) here in America. It would be nice if Ford would shift Fusion production to America. Chrysler - well they make 2 cars here but I wouldn't call them volume units.
