Ethanol, etc
by pat85 on Fri Jul 25 06:31:54 PDT 2008
Or is it the Ethanol that is stealing my miles? Ethanol adds a variable to the equation that is hard to track with mileage Ethanol does not have the inherent energy of gasoline. It causes lower MPG I am retired , I do 0 miles per day going to work. I traded in a Toyota 4 Runner on a Camry Hybrid in April. I made $7K on the 4 Runner over what I still owed. I got $3K off the Hybrid. I average about 34 MPG in short commutes. instead of 15 MPG for the 4 Runner. I used to go out on the beaches on the Outer Banks. The Audubon Society in a closed session with a judge got the beeches closed even to swimmers and sun bathers. I won't be going back. Let Audubon make them all starve for non- endangered birds.

I endorse common sense items such as personal recycling, reducing your own family's carbon footprint, driving more efficient vehicles, stop WASTING in ALL AREAS of life, buying solar and wind power if you can afford it, shop and trade at Goodwill so clothes get "recycled", etc etc. I can endorse doing all those things also. Except maybe the Goodwill. I prefer the Salvation Army and other thrift stores. The Goodwill is generally over priced in my experience. That is the main thing we do on vacation is hit all the thrift shops. We buy cloths look for coffee cups, books etc etc. One of the victims of the fuel increase may be recycling. They do very little recycling in the Hawaiian Islands because it costs too much to ship the scrap to the mainland. It may become the case here also. The problem I see with the Green Movement is it has been hijacked by unscrupulous people. What may start out as good cause soon gets taken over by people with a political agenda. Two such organizations that I have belonged to over the years have met that fate. The Sierra Club and the Audubon Society. So far the San Diego Zoological Society has been pretty good. Though they get attacked by wacko groups like PETA.

If you have the property to do it check on geothermal for the heat pump. I've had heat pumps all along and the efficiency is nice. I believe there are ground loops and there are well types. The local Audubon building has a well type and there was an installation error of some kind by the contractor. When my son was doing his Eagle project under the guidance of their grounds manager, he was telling about his problems. Also don't replace just parts of the exteriior equipment; replace the whole unit for highest efficiency. I suspect I'm still ahead of the cost of heating and AC compared to the natural gas folks for my 25 years in this home.
More disgusted with those feeding at the GW trough [larsb]

I think what those scientist that would not like to have their names on the list are embarrassed by the fact that their scientific papers do not line up with the popular GW agenda. They do not want to lose their funding. So they deny their own scientific studies to stay at the radical GW cults feeding trough. An example is the Audubon Society. They have been taken over by the radical environmental groups. The May/June issue of the magazine is mostly GW opinion based on little or no facts. I sent them a letter with my cancellation. Told them to let me know when they get back to using scientific studies and not political opinions in their articles. Then I would start contributing again. This country is being taken down the wrong path by environmental zealots that are more of a religious cult than anything else. Give us some alternatives that work and are practical and I am all for it. Don't try making me feel guilty for my miniscule carbon footprint while theirs is 100s of times greater.
Face it - Global Warming is a theory... [tidester]

once respected scientific journals have become so blatantly and openly political and one-sided. I belong to the Audubon Society and was once a Sierra Club member. I feel they were both taken over by radical elements. There is No such thing as zero growth. Flora, Fauna, societies and civilizations either grow or they die. Like it or not Nature is survival of the fittest. When you see a Killer whale or Polar bear do what they do to survive it is harsh & brutal and it is reality. So when you have people preaching that we all need to move into a stinking city and ride a stinking bus, I say NO WAY. I do not believe in wasting our natural resources. I also do not believe it is healthy living like rats in a city. I have probably planted as many thousands of trees on my properties as anyone else here. So I am soaking up my CO2 if it is even a problem. I am not going to pay some scam artist money to plant a tree in Africa and claim it is doing some good.
Old Home week

Funny seeing some of the names from the old SUV forum. I got rid of my 4 Runner when the NC beach access got hosed up by the Audubon Society after they reneged on their deal to negotiate access to drivers on the beach. I actually did use my 4 Runner off road. I got spoiled being able to see farther ahead in the 4 Runner and adjust what lane to be in that was moving So good bye to 15 MPG. I traded the 4 Runner in on a Camry Hybrid. I am averaging about 38+ MPG with the TCH. That's about 2.5 times the MPG. of the 4 Runner The good thing is I have not had to give up comfort or safety with the TCH At $4 a gallon, I'll save about $160 a month driving 1000 miles. .
