JD powers has Scions below average. But CR has rated 2009 cars before 2009? I am sure they don't rate the Reno at the top of their list. Sounds like them rate the car first and then see how they hold up. But I have never hid my dislike of the xB. I wouldn't ride in one to a dog fight let alone drive one to a dog fight. Any car designed by etch a sketch just goes against the grain. They even managed to make it less desirable to the target demographic with the redesign. But I know people who like them, they were the same ones that bought a Aztec when they first came out I am sure. The xD neither offends me nor excites me. Lots of other cars in their class that do what they are supposed to do with better fuel economy. Still a 16 month sales slump for Scion has to indicate something no matter what CR thinks. And the person doing the article was interesting saying that dependability doesn't stop him or her from buying a car they like. I had to smirk. I can be the same way if I like a car but I just can't get passed dependability and ugly. But the question was worst car of 2008. Scion has plenty of time to drop in a year.

"Well you can bet that anything built by GM will be falling apart shortly after the warranty expires if not before." And there is the beauty of nominating the Reno. You don't have to wait till the warrentee for it to fall apart. From the dependability studies you can watch it fall apart right before your eyes. Maybe even faster than a VW? Well maybe not that fast but pretty quick. Faster than a Kia Reo? Well even they are rated better than a Reno. But I still say darn the luck the Subaru Baja is gone. It was an easy pick. But then the Scions aren't pretty and they aren't Toyota dependable so there is still hope.
Sorry but....

The Aveo still reeks and is essentially a rebadged Daewoo. It's truly awful. Granted the Suzuki Reno is also a bad car and also a Daewoo. The FJ Cruiser has poor visibility that's a fact but it's not really ugly and it's extremely reliable. Poor sales due to low fuel economy. I don't think the Dodges are all that ugly either. Some less than others, but overall not horrible. The Aveo is a real competitor to the Yugo and is about as reliable. It's ugly, unreliable, uncomfortable and gets poor fuel economy. I would give a Nod also to the Suzuki Reno as another piece of rebadged crap. Why can't Suzuki bring the Swift Sport to the US? Besides a Truck isn't a car and most trucks look Butch, and most look like trucks. The SmartCar is also another ugly car and I like hatchbacks! I hate VW's because of poor reliability but I like the look of the Golf and the new Jetta Sportwagen. The Smart Car is a waste of money but some people like the look, it's retro-futuristic. All it needs is Woody Allen to make it complete. Aveo = Total Crap Yugo Wannabe
To be clear

Shouldn't the worst car be, Ugly, have poor sales, and be rated as unreliable? The Reno fits all three. Right now universally the Element and xB are ugly. But are somewhat dependable. The Prius is very ugly but dependable as well and sells better than average. The only thing rated less dependable than the Suzuki is the Land rover and they are not considered ugly by most. I would also agree the Smart earns a place on the list due to its failure to meet even one of the promises it offered when it was introduced. It cost more than several bigger vehicles in its class. It doesn't get better fuel mileage than some less expensive vehicles in its class. And its cuteness wore off rather quickly. It has been in the red in Europe almost from its first introduction. The Kia Reo isn't a stunner and is down there with VW and Suzuki in dependability. It would seem that the worst cars would have to come from the least dependable vehicles we could buy or if we are voting for ugly the Element, Prius, and xB are in a class all by themselves.

How does this sale affect Suzuki products down the road? Their entire lineup is built on GM platforms and such No no, that's not true. Suffice it to say Suzuki will be just fine, in fact much better off for its disassociation from the poisonous influence GM has had on it. The only product based on GM anything besides the about-to-be-discontinued Reno and Forenza is the XL7. They have already been talking about making changes to the XL7 to bring it more into the Suzuki fold, with proprietary engines and whatnot. I imagine that will happen within the next two years if GM doesn't fold first. And steve, I said it in a different thread but I will say it here too, Edmunds is wrong-headed on this one. But I will add that it won't matter much in the end, as Ford will make it through regardless and GM won't get loans in time to save them.

The SX4 and Reno are worlds apart. The Reno is a rebadged Daewoo something-or-other, designed many years ago and built to be cheap. Warranty costs are high. The SX4 is actually designed and built by Suzuki, which still counts for something: it has a better engine, better materials, and I think the looks are kinda cute, although I wouldn't deny the quirky description if you are sticking to it. ;-)
