Sure you can spend $300 on a pair of jeans or $150 on shoes, but cheap alternatives exist at most retailers. I remember back in the 70's and early 80's, my Mom usually bought me cheap shoes. Either NBA from Kinney Shoes, or some Thom McCahns or something like that. They usually came to about $20. Adjusted for inflation, $20 in 1980 is about $58 today. Yet today, you could get a halfway decent pair of shoes for about $50-60. Obviously not some top-of-the-line blingy thing, but it's not something the other kids will make fun of, either. Yet today, if you still want cheap shoes, go to WalMart, K-Mart, or Payless, and you'll still pay about twenty bucks for them.

It's not like we've seen automobile, clothing, food, healthcare, cost become cheaper in the "free-market" ;) Healthcare is certainly out of control, but I wouldn't say health care is a total free market either. But cars, clothes, electronics, and many other items have benefited by free market principles A low end IBM PC in the early 80's was easily $4,000. A 35" Mitsubishi 35" tube TV in 1985 was $3,000. A vhs video recorder the size of a suit case used to cost well over $1,000 in the early 80's. Cheap clothes are offered everywhere. Sure you can spend $300 on a pair of jeans or $150 on shoes, but cheap alternatives exist at most retailers. Cars are hard to compare when you consider what you get for $ compared to say 25 years ago in terms of amenities and reliability, but overall cars have stayed in line with overall inflation. Food prices are largely dependent on energy costs and other commodities etc, and have increased at a higher rate than many other items. Without foreign competition, we'd probably be paying $45k for an Impala so GM could continue to afford expensive UAW contracts. But I guess that's is music to some people's ears.
Re: Small hatchbacks [nippononly]

The GTI was cool maybe in other parts of the world but it wasn't cool for the American market. The Integra, cool, the Prelude, cool, the GTI was a rabbit/Golf/VW and was only cool to a few. Supra was cool but so few who called things cool bought VW GTIs it is hard to call them cool. Hatchbacks are getting more popular but they will never be cool if we are talking cool in the pop culture sense. This isn't to say they aren't worthy cars they are simply the homely sister of the home coming queen in the automotive world. NSX is cool. Corvette is cool. Cool is pulling up to a group of car people and turning heads. It is showing up at the import drags and having people hang on the car. It is going to a car club or auto show in some small town and having people take turns taking pictures of your car. Now that all changes if we redefine cool into practical or functional. But that in itself isn't cool. Cool is a frame of mind and has nothing to do with practical. $100.00 7s jeans is cool. 501s are practical and maybe even better made.

>Should Customer B be treated any differently, or receive worse service, because they paid less? The answer is Yes. Why? Because the US is not a Socialistic country. Every customer is not expected to be treated the same. The treatment customer receives is a function of his/her patronage bestowed upon the house. A local Jean boutique offers free hemming with any pair of jeans that you buy. However, if a customer comes in with a discount coupon, then the free hemming offer is not presented to the customer. If the purchase exceeds $1000, then the customer also gets a waiver for the valet expense..... Macy's also puts your product in a plastic bag if the items purchased are sale/clearance items. If you buy full price items, your purchase is presented in a crisp paper bag. Walmart covers your car seat with plastic wrap if you choose Full premium oil change. I have the complete Verizon bundle, bundled with DirecTV. If I have any problems, and I call them, the call is answered in under 4 rings and I get greeted by a human being, not a machine. how many more examples does anyone need?

Re: 2008 4x2 v8 trans problem [scottcrafton]
by jettaface on Thu Oct 30 13:29:53 PDT 2008
Hi..see my response on 10/30 or let me just tell you. I took to dealer again and finally while driving with a tech, the problem happened. Drove backwards, place into drive and 5 second delay before the trans engaged. The tech called HQ Tech Support. Was told to adjust the netural safety switch, which does make sense. So far the trans seems to be responding correctly without a delay. I have my fingers crossed. If it happens again, I will advise this forum. Wish you luck with yours. Jean
