Re: 90k Service before long road trip [paisan]

Thanks Mike. My dealer is doing the timing belt and the mechanic says I should do water pump while I am at it. What's the life expectancy of the pump?
90k Service before long road trip
by originalbitman on Mon Oct 27 13:59:08 PDT 2008
First off a big hello to all the old members... I haven't been on the board for some time. I am about to embark on a 5,500 mile road trip in my 2001 Legacy GT wagon. Everything has been great with the car. Should I go ahead and have the timing belt done now ahead of schedule? Brakes are original but pads amazingly still look okay. I do occasionally notice a little pulsing that likely means a warped rotor. Should I do brakes and if so all new rotors? Along with oil, filters, plugs, cooling flush is there any other maintenance I should do? What is the current thinking on plug brand and type? Thanks to all. bit
Solara maintenance
by mm7003 on Sat Oct 18 14:57:42 PDT 2008
Well, I'm bad...I've maintained the obvious maintenance and replacements on my 2000 SLE V6 Solara (brakes, tires and rotation, struts/seals, etc., oil, air filter) but did not do the traditional 60K, 75K and it now has 80K on it. I checked into local prices in Eureka, CA and am astonished at the prices for a engine coolant and spark plug replacement -- $469. I've checked with 4 different shops and they are all basically the same. More disturbing is the 90K coming up with the timing belt (and why not replace the fuel filter, water pump, seals, etc. they said) coming to a whopping $1200. I mentioned the cab once in a while smells of the rotten egg smell when I have the recirculation air switched on. This led to a quote for the 3 catalytic converters costing $2,765. All in all, my car which has no problems other than the smell thing is amounting to $4,434 in the next year when the car is probably only worth $8,000 to a private party. Does this sound right to any of you? The repair costs seem excessive. What do you recommend? Thank you.
Frost 'one more thing' for grape growers
by gagrice on Tue Oct 14 20:14:14 PDT 2008
The Grape growers will be running their SUVs to try and warm up the area. Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at 5:26 a.m. A record cold snap in Mendocino County over the weekend caused little damage to wine grapes but chilled the hearts of farmers who already have suffered huge losses this year. "It's just one more thing on top of one more thing. You kind of hold your breath," said Potter Valley wine grape grower Bill Pauli. Temperatures dropped to 31 degrees in the Ukiah Valley on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, the coldest Oct. 12 morning since record keeping began in Ukiah in 1893, said Troy Nicolini, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Eureka. The previous record was 34 degrees in 1916. http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20081014/NEWS/810140335/-1/frontpage?Title=- Frost__one_more_thing__for_grape_growers
Eureka!

Persistence pays. Sold my 2000 Chevy Cavalier Z24 convertible on 9/24 after only 6 days on Craigslist. I had already been checking AutoTrader and Cars.com for all new 2007 and 2008 Eos but couldn't find exactly what I wanted within reasonable distance: Paprika Red base turbo. On 9/25 I started checking the VW dealers' sites through VW.com and found the perfect car at a dealer in San Jose, CA (700 miles from my SW Idaho home) for an incredible $27,779 with all four available options on the base turbo: auto, heated seats, floor mats, i-Pod adapter. Sent them an e-mail that night, and got their response Fri. morning: yes, they still had the car. Called them immediately and said I would look at the car over the weekend. Booked the only flight Fri. afternoon from Boise to San Jose and five hours later I called the dealer from the San Jose airport and asked him to send his courtesy car to pick me up (they did!). Saw my true love :P that evening. Did the paperwork Sat. morning, including the VW Credit 2.9% for 60 mos., and drove home Sat./Sun. with the top down in the 80F sunshine of the Nevada/Oregon desert! Glorious!! Got 32 mpg on its first two tanks of premium. When I put on the "show" for people by operating the top, they are amazed. There are fewer than ten Eos in SW Idaho, and I really like driving something so cool and so out-of-the-ordinary. And today, I found out just how nice heated seats are, as the temp today was in the low 40's. This is an amazing car!!

Bingo. It was the Henney Kilowatt, a joint venture between Henney Coachworks (hearse-makers) and the Eureka Williams Company (vacuum-cleaner makers). Insert your own joke here. The original version was capable of about 30 mph and had a range of about 30 miles. About 50 were built and sold, mostly to electric utilities.
