Re: 2009 FX35 deal ... ??? [jayrandall]

I regret not getting and FX 35 or FX 45 when I got the M 35 Sport. So next one will definitely be an FX. I like the diamond graphite color, too bad they discontinued it. Sapphire Blue is also nice which is quite rare as I have only seen them at the dealership and never on the road. I didn't think there was that much difference between 2005 and 2006 besides some cosmetic changes on the outside and revised instrument panel and some additional features.

That '79 Mark V would actually fit in well with my New Yorkers...they were both styled by the same people. A lot of Ford stylists jumped ship to Chrysler, before Iacocca even came over. But my attitude towards the Mark V runs sort of hot and cold. I love the icy blue '78 Diamond Jubilee that my friend has, but unless they're a nice, soothing shade of blue or the right shade of green, I lose interest. To me, the color can make or break these cars. That Bill Blass edition isn't too bad, but the midnight blue and white just seems too sharp of a contrast to me. I'd probably tolerate a Mopar R-body or '76 LeMans in just about any color, but I'm pickier with the Marks. Then there's just the issue of the size of the danged things! I think a Mark V is about 231" long...about 10" longer than my '79 NYers. While I do like big car, I think even I have my limits. If I ever get some big 70's mastodon, I think I want to go for a '71-75 GM convertible, my favorites being the '75 LeSabre, '72 Impala, and '71-72 LeSabre, in that order. Or a big 4-door hardtop, an Electra being my first choice, although I do like them all. And I do have to confess a fondness for the Toronado. I actually prefer the look of the '75-78 models with the rectangular headlights, although I miss the true hardtop styling that was offered in '71-74. And I guess a runner-up would be a big '74-78 C-body New Yorker/Imperial/Newport I really like the Plymouth Fury and Dodge Monaco 4-door hardtops of this generation, but they're almost impossible to find. They weren't popular to begin with, and were culled after 1975.. The style was popular in the Newport and New Yorker lines, but those cars were different enough from the Plymouths and Dodges that they didn't get much of an economy of scale. Even though they were all considered C-bodies, comparing the big Fury/Monaco to the Newport/New Yorker was like comparing an Impala to an Electra. Same basic underlying structure, but not much that was really interchangeable.

Yeah, they are nice cars. My buddy's cars are the Diamond Jubilee edition, which was done up in a frosty metallic blue. You could also get the DJE in a goldish/champagne color, but it wasn't nearly as popular. I think they even had clearcoat paint on them, which had to have been rare in those days. I drove his ratty one once, soon after he first bought it. Its 460 had been hopped up a bit, so it performed better than it was meant to! It actually encouraged foot-stomping. Well, the engine did, but not so much the suspension and brakes. Still, that could have been one reason that my bud blew it up! And I think you're right, in that the 351/400 are the same block, the Cleveland, while the 460 was a totally different block. The 460 was a big-block, while I think the Cleveland was considered more of a "medium" block. By 1979, I think the 400 was down to 159 hp. Probably still enough for leisurely cruising in a big boat like a '79 Lincoln, but nothing you'd take to the drag strip.

Yeah a 91 300SE is pretty unusual, most you see are 89-90. That one has really been tackified, the chrome wheel lips, wheels, tint, and grille kill the simple elegance of the W126. Mine was an 89 300SE. It was pretty miled up by the time I sold it, but it was still a beautiful car, and I would have kept it if I could. I think those cars are just so good looking, when stock anyway. I wouldn't mind having another sometime, I would especially like to to find a diamond blue (same color as mine) with a creme interior. 4 place seating in a SEL would be very cool too. I also wouldn't mind finding an unmolested period AMG example. A very clean 100K mile late W126 with documented maintenance and no deferred issues should run maybe 5K. Prices are pretty equal no matter which model. Only the very special cars will go significantly higher than that.

With a dead tranny, a car like that would be worth so little. He really got lucky. Back in 2004 I think it was, I found a 70K mile 1988 560SL at a local dealer. It was diamond blue to match my W126, so I was attracted to it. It was an immaculate 1 owner car. They wanted 15K for it...it did sell in no more than a few days...that's the kind your friend should have bought.
